In this video I bring you along as I finish a diagnosis and repair on this 2005 Ford Focus. I replace a PCM that I diagnosed earlier this summer with a used one and I show how you can relearn the PATS keys using the Autel MS908 to fix codes U1900 and P1601. We also have a look at what is going on with the SRS light.
If an SMA Video has helped you out please consider giving using the "support" link on our RU-vid home page. The videos take real time to create and pull us away from real work that pays our bills.
THANKS!
--Eric O.

Interesting vid, well done Eric. I'm surprized the pats sequence worked, it specifically said to count to three 1-2-3 and you reversed the sequence and did 3-2-1 , got lucky on that one buddy :)

Nice, Most dealerships around here won't program a new VIN in a used Ford computer. I can do them with IDS and my chinese Clone VCM2. I used to do PATs programming with it too, but now I just do the pats with my Launch X431 Diagun V. I keep a stash of cheap Ford PATs key from amazon and I have a key shop that will cut them for $10, so I always have a plenty of those for people who have lost there key. You can do a Add a Key if you only have one key and there have bee 4 or 6 programmed for it (depending on the year). Plus that won't deactivate there old key if they ever find it. I have also done it were they only want on key, but they have 4 programmed so I need to reset the keys. My clone keys have a removable chip that pops out. So I can change the chip with another blank key and program it as the second key and then just give them the one key. I work with a lot of poor people that are just trying to get to work in there $500 car.

We got hooked up with a local locksmith that does vehicle locks. He will come to our location and reprogram ECU/ECM/PCM/BCM/TCU with the correct VIN, mileage, etc and reprogram keys/security for the bargain price of $45 if we can wait (usually less than 48 hours) or $75 that business day or $100 within 2 hours. Usually takes him 15-30 minutes from the time he arrives to complete the reprogramming and deliver his invoice. For $40 additional he will flash the manufacturer's latest available calibration while he is connected. No keys, no problem, first key is $125-300 depending on make, model and year. Extra keys are generally $5-150 each.

Another great video. I understand the chase for the pretensioner on Fords. I chased a simular issue to find out again the pretensioner was inside the b pillar. Great satisfaction when found but it did take a service manual check to verify the issue. Scan tools definately help with diagnosis ( more like required) to really get a good picture of faults. I love the real time data features. Very informative but it does take some time to figure out where everything is and how to use them well. Thanks again, I really do appreciate your videos.

Amazed at your knowledge and abilities with diagnosing and repairing almost anything you can get in your garage. This video is the closest to my girlfriend’s issue with her 2003 Ford Windstar and we both were hoping you maybe knew of any place in the Fort Worth or Dallas area that you trust or would recommend to help with a similar type job that wouldn’t cost a fortune? Maybe you have a friend that owns a great place like yours in our area? Fingers crossed. Keep up the great work and videos. God bless you and yours in the future.

Interesting Eric, I did a Focus 2005 year and the Imob was reset thro the instrument panel. Which was done by IDS at Ford and had to have a code in and code out to recode the instrument panel. I have the Autel Minisys now I will check this tomorrow. Also the UK spec cars have the PCM located near the battery under the bonnet.Tam.

I owned one of these, but a 2004 w/ a Ford Zetec (Mazda) engine with automatic trans and it was a rocket-ship. Through the years it ate drive line bushings... I don't beleive the drive line structure was designed for the torque of this specific perfomance engine. The engine took root in the high-end Focus cars/wagons after serious valve retainer issues came-up on the 2002 Ford 2.3?, this engine was replaced in production w/Mazda 2.1 16V (Ford Zetec). This Zetec Engine had a red-line of about 7800 RPM. Never once beaten by any car road or highway.. just unlimited power. Only problem with the Zetec other than it's supreme torque was the plastic rocker-cover when synthetic oil was used -- it leaked like hell!

the old PATS algorithm was apparently RELEASED from ford/mazda and is now fully programmable with Snap-On and Matco(Launch) scan tools. With Matco Maximus, though, you still need to purchase or generate tokens in order to gain access to the programming menu. (idk, might be updated now) Autel, like many people know, most of their functions are reversed engineered from OE tools so it can neutralize and reprogram many modern immobilizer systems without having to purchase tokens. Even when they can't access directly, Autel Maxisys comes with J-boxes for J2534 programming so you can still flash and program keys through OE provided paid services. I recently had a Mazda 6 with crossed battery terminal just like this video. Ended up having to replace PCM, TCM, a bunch of burned wiring and pretty much all light bulbs in car. BTW, Autel seems to be affecting other scan tool makers recently. Both Snap-On and Launch are pumping out new updates like never before ever since Autel became famous.

My neighbor did the same thing when he tried to replace the battery to his Rolls Royce. He blew out the ammeter shunt when he hooked up the battery backward. Lucky for him it was an easy fix. Just removed the old ammeter shunt and install a new/used ammeter shunt and the Rolls was rolling again. My brother who holds a doctoral degree in Mathematic also did the same thing with his Nissan when he went to change the battery. Hooked up the battery backward and fried the car computer. Just go to show you need more Common Sense in this world then a PHd degree.

Another great video Eric - thanks. I feel sorry for the young fellow who made the polarity mistake - you're right, we all make mistakes but usually not this expensive. I am not a technician, so this might be a dumb observation, but it seems strange that cars don't have some kind of built in reversed polarity protection - a diode or something.
