Thank you for this very informative video. My '98 zx2 died on my last night on the way to a christmas party. One of the pullys had shattered while doing down the road. After watching this, I'm now confident that I can have the repair done by this evening for the cost of parts, rather than the $600 that I was quoted.

On any belt driven engine, you should always turn the crankshaft over by two revolutions (720 crankshaft degrees) by hand and re-check your timing with the appropriate timing tools and check the tension on the tensioner pulley. few mistakes in this video, but this one was the most prominent.

EXCELLENT video! I used this video to replace the timing belt on my Focus. I had to borrow an impact wrench though, to remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and to put it back on. I couldn't figure out any other way to do it, without an impact wrench. I think that is what he did in this video too, although you can't see it, you can hear an impact wrench when the crankshaft bolt comes off. Also, I would recommend to anyone that you replace your water pump at the same time! Mine failed at 133k!

This is an extremely easy job guys! This video is very informative in every detailed way. I have to say this video is over and above what you normally see exposed to the general public. Great job! There are alot of contours in the area in which I live and due to experience with owning and selling a lot contours I get called for repairs. I charge $375 to do these and change all the components. Great DYI informing video!

I just finished this job, and wanted to share something I think is important. If you loosen the cam gear bolts to help install and align the timing belt, you will have a hard time keeping the cam gears from moving when you go to torgue the cam gear bolts back down, seems although the cams themselves didn't move ( I had them wedged with locking pliers against the inside , outer wall of the head , and left the cam locking plate inserted although they say not to) the cam gear did move as I tightened the bolt, pulling the belt clockwise just enough to throw the crank off of TDC position ( I did not leave the TDC pin in as they said if it broke you were screwed) I remembered reading on a youtube post somewhere that a guy talked about using a piece of rubber hose ( gas line etc.) to wedge between the cam gears in the middle where they almost touch, then I torgued the cam gears down, and they did not move. I know this because I had painted a reference point on each gear in the middle where they almost touch to make sure they had not moved after I completed tightening the cam gear bolts, then after removing the cam locking bar and rotating the crank twice and stopping on #1 TDC, my painted on cam gear reference marks lined up, I put it back together and it fired right up, runs fine. PS , I think Ford is goofy for not putting timing marks and cam gear pins on this engine , I've changed a lot of timing belts on various engines over the years, and this one is the most difficult I have encountered , mostly because of no reference marks or cam gear pins, and , yes I did use the TDC locking pin and the cam shaft locking bar tools, still difficult because the cam gears wanted to move. If you can do this job without loosening the cam gears, thats what I would recommend.

+hondasilverwing I am wondering if I need to replace my timing belt...Crank, no start, spark, camshaft position sensor cks 'good' with VOM, Crankshaft position sensor cks 'good' (Ck Eng Lite goes off when cranking and there is spark at plug). One more item,,,when I pulled the plug wire, the cavity was full of coolant. Any help would be greatly appreciated. '03 Focus 2.0KL ZTec DOHC VIN code 3.

They say use a $300 tool to keep cam gears from rotating. I used a piece of fuel line between them and it worked great. For some reason, it looks like you have more space than on my Focus. Great video! Thanks!

@GTXKen Thanks! The drive belt system is just about the same. The spring you may need goes on the tensioner. Some early models were not even equipped with them. On other, time weakens the spring so replacing is recommended.

@MrRaiomCurst Thanks for leaving a comment! The PCM monitors the fuel pump monitor circuit from the fuel pump driver module. With the key on, the FPDM continuously sends a duty cycle signal to the PCM through the FPM circuit. The test fails if the PCM stops receiving the duty cycle signal. If your only reading 90 psi in compression, that is too low. Your timing could be off causing the hesitation. Since the engine runs better with the VCT disconnected, that confirms timing is off.

I managed to get auxilliary belt on. Seems like a good method too. Got it on everything except water pump pulley.(pulley off already),could then get ONE 10mm bolt through water pump pulley and into flange. Was then able to lever against pulley (using bottom right corner of middle timing belt cover as fulcrum) until pulley moved over into position and then pulley could be tapped onto centre of flange.(bolts put in) Works a treat. Had aux belt off again 4 another reason and bak on again no probs.

Anyway, had another go, started up straight away again. So I double checked a few things(again) and went for a little run. Not far before running SHITE and cutting out, Came home, wouldnt even tick over. Left it 4 days thinking I had to do some more work. Then remembered what it said in handbook about "if battery been disconnected".(it had,been off and on several times due to going flat cos it took me ages to get round to getting on with it). Anyway I started car up and just improved by itself.

I missed the torque setting used on the timing belt tensioner pulley and, to how hold the intake cam when breaking the pulley loose. Only the exhaust cam seemed to have a place for a wrench. While tightening the cam sprockets I did notice a wrench in the background holding the exhaust cam (but no mention of it in the video) and nothing was showing how to hold the intake cam while tightening the cam pulley except the timing belt. This is a good "how to" video for general information for someone who is considering doing this at home but, too much information is left out for it to be used as your only instructional video for this job. I strongly suggest watching several other videos of this same procedure before attempting to do this at home. Good step by step instructions with all the 'why's" is very important here and, can save a lot of frustration.

The ECU had to "re learn" stuff,(which it did) and then car ran great. When I first had problem I never thought that I could tackle it, looked so daunting, now I am glad that I did. By the way, the problem turned out to be the timing belt tensioner pulley. The black plastic? stuff at the outer part of the pulley about a third of that had broken off. I suppose I could have just bunged in a new tensioner pulley, saved a load of hassle. But did full job, wanted to do whats right.
@srmastertech
@srmastertech 12 лет назад
@StevenGaming If you remove the spark plugs, then you can rotate the crankshaft. Cylinder 1 is the closest to the timing belt. Install a long straight wooden dowel into cyl 1 plug hole. Rotate the crankshaft until the dowel stops the upward travel. This will be TDC for cyl 1. Install your special tools and then you can remove an idler pulley to remove the belt.

You want to turn the bolt clockwise so the tensioner pulley raises up and back towards the firewall, so you're going the right direction. On the 2.0 I just did, I had to put the belt on everything except the top idler pulley. I had to move the tensioner pully as far as it would go and had someone push down on the belt so it went under the idler pulley. Even then it was a bit of a struggle for them to push it on

@Spacecarboy I have seen others use the starter to crank the engine with a breaker bar to loosen the crank bolt. If you dont have an impact, that may work. Just so you know, I have also seen this done and cause a starter to break.

@srmastertech 12 лет назад
@pl747 I use a wrench to hold the camshaft with tightening the cam gear to camshaft. At 3:13, you can see the wrench on the intake cam through the cam gear window. At 3:26. you can see the wrench on the exhaust cam. You are right, I didn't show removing the tools, I only stated to remove them.

@1212papo Sorry to say this, but is coolant is leaking at the seam between the head and block, the head gasket is leaking. There are cooling jackets between the outside and the cylinder and that would be where its from. If the coolant is leaking from the tensioner bolt hole its self, the bolt at one time may have been inserted and bottomed out to possibly crack into that cooling jacket.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING!! I have a 2002 focus ZTS with the same engine and it is not running. I was driving down the highway on a super cold NW Iowa morning last winter and it would jerk a little but kept running until it jerked a few more times and died. After determining it wasn't the fuel pump and checking for spark (it had spark) I compression tested it. It had even 50 psi on all cylinders so i figured it must have sheered a couple cogs off the belt. Sound like a safe guess?
