Too much rear brake bias and inadequate suspension to absorb those bumps

Nick Kautz its not about bias, just see he dowshifted on that part, which lead to rear wheels go in forward slip and that caused the car to spin out
@NickKautz
@NickKautz 7 лет назад
Downshifting wasn't the problem. That car was poorly balanced and he was driving sloppy. That crash could have been avoided with more front brake bias but he probably would have crashed some other way driving the way he was.
@tushermyth
@tushermyth 7 лет назад
Nick Kautz yes those factors are there and i agree with you .... But the thing is when u have such a poorly designed car, a little imbalancing that is the rear tyres slipping can upset it quite easily and that is what we see in the video ... He clearly downshifted. Please check it out again

Please keep in mind when I’m stating the following that I am NOT a mechanic or a professional race car driver. I simply just do Sim-Racing / Track days and race Karts competitively. Now with that said this looks like a multitude of issues, poor suspension, driving style, bad track, cold tires, awful paddle placement, bad brake bias. But it seemed to me that he upset the car due to the poor suspension coming into the braking zone, then got into the brakes which got the rear end light especially with the car already upset, he either panicked or misjudged the braking and locked the rear up and ended up spinning around. You can see from the lap previous he corrected lift off oversteer in the same part of the track. Lot of things to be improved and taken away from here

That poor guy was trying to control a car that was dialed in with F1 worthy settings. You can see him oscillating back and forth, that's because the front tires have so much bite that there's no understeer from jerking the wheel to the extremes (which normal road cars have, and is an important "safety margin" to have for new drivers.) That thing needs thicker rear tires and less camber for newbies.

Braked too hard and too fast when the steering wheel wasn't straight. Try braking with more progression, so by the time you are hitting the brakes hard your wheel is straight and the car more balanced. You will be able to care more momentum trought the apex.
@MrRacs1
@MrRacs1 10 лет назад
True, but the brake-balance also needs to be more to the front, since it was the rear that locked :)

Mightymoose02 9 month old conversation but whatever. It seems like he down shifted after he lost it. I think the bump lifted the load off the tires for a split second allowing for the brakes to lock up.

I usually stay out of the morass of RU-vid viewer comments, but I'm up late and amazed by the commentary. Loads of people yapping with no idea of what they're talking about outweighing a few here and there who do. First, these are cars with an extremely short wheelbase. That means unstable. Look up "polar moment of inertia". Next, the steering ratio is very quick, making it more twitchy and difficult. Add stiff suspension, then add really bumpy track. It's obvious the driver is not very experienced, and this is a learning run. They are probably a bit overwhelmed. It doesn't look like they ever get close to what would be a quick lap for the car's potential, as far as I can tell, not driving the thing (so what do I know, there, right?... but you can sort of tell if you know what you're seeing). Not smooth at all, but, then, see the above. "Smooth" in this car would be a big challenge. BIG challenge. And put it in context- it's a student, the people in this are not on the road to F1. This is somebody trying to just get to terms with the car at even a moderate kind of pace. One person in particular nailed it most simply and succinctly (Matt Murphy), he lost the rear braking and turning. It's a really tough spot- it's a slight left, right around where the braking point would probably be, with the weight transfer off the rears as you lift and get on the brakes. Recipe for, in this case, the rear wheels losing grip and the rear heading to the right and rotating the car left when you need to be turning in for the right-hander. Oops. It''s gone. Wading through a lot of comments, I didn't see anybody noticing this: he's grabbing an UPSHIFT right about the same time as he downshifts on the previous lap, then apparently realizes his mistake, right as the rear end is taking off on him, AND, key point, to make it all worse, hitting the bump mentioned by the uploader of the video, which, very clearly, was the biggest problem, severely upsetting the car and unloading the rear tires at the worst possible moment. He then downshifts, as the car is actually already spinning, adding to the picture I get of the driver simply having multiple tricky items all coming together at the same time and, well, we're into simple mental overload at a time when catching it and saving the car would have been pretty impressive, if he had. He didn't. oops... skitter skitter... thump Add it all up; short wheelbase twitchy, who knows what the chassis setup might have been, especially front toe, a tricky left-right combination making it really difficult to actually brake in a straight line entering the corner, an obviously inexperienced driver with no sign of great skill in this kind of driving, and when he hits a bump in a blur of a really tricky combination of factors, around it goes.

the car isn't sorted out, or even completely built .. a little premature to be judging driving skills .. also I can say after watching some of these SAE cars run .. they are vastly over powered for their weight and thus are well above the skill level of that average student inexperienced drivers ... would be better if they used a basic low power 4 stroke kart racing engine instead.

I guess theses cars are more about engineering than about the driving, but yeah. That car is far from complete. I don't know about the rear, but there is only mechanical grip on the front, no body panels to increase downforce/decrease drag, etc.

those paddle shifters are like 2 blocks away from the steering wheel and fixed in position x.x If you look closely it might have even be part of the cause for the mistake, he was trying to shift and while doing so turn slightly to the left
@Saabjock
@Saabjock Год назад
At 0:55 he had his first moment and you could see the outcome starting there. The issue was not setup, it was a driver basically 'jumping' in and out of throttle rather than gradually modulating it. That action of loading and unloading/upset the car's balance. Incident #1.... The incorrect line he took leading up to the entry of the right-hander. The apex to the left was a sacrificial one that should have been skipped. The car should have been positioned to the extreme right after the downhill left-hander. The correct line on the right would have seen him give up that apex. He panic-braked after taking a bit more curb than intended from said apex while also trying to jink left to open up the entry to the right-hander. You can hear it also as he jumps in and out of the throttle before the car tries to swap ends.

I've seen many of this kind of crashes and I'm still not sure why this happens.. Is it because he breaks hard and sudendly the car bumps, and then the wheels get locked because of that and he ends up loosing control?
@drivenbypassion3634

Apparently everyone here points out flaws in the kart, says they can build a better one, can drive better and wouldn't crash here. I've seen one of these Karts/cars in person I can say that the amount of sheer work, determination and CAD (Computer Assisted Design) that goes into these, built by students with little interference with teachers is more than what I or anyone could accomplish. sure he crashed here, but success without failure is impossible.

Is it a downshift without bliping the throttle locking the rear wheels?
@KogakuinRacingTube

Downshift can be done with blipping the throttle, but doesn't lock with this maneuver. Spin and crash is caused by the road bump.

Oversteer snap 😵 I remember once I did something similar. Applied brakes on a motorcycle to go slow through a patch of road that had some loose gravel on it. And the motorcycle decided to throw the rear sideways. I was quick on response to not fall over. My experience of falling hundreds of times from bike might have contributed to the reflexes 🤣. But it's always fun to race in such raw formats.
