What I find especially amazing about this setup is that these linkages allow the very complicated synchronization of each component of the flaps to be done with just a single actuator.
That is truly a work of art. It reminds me of some of the complicated linkage setups that BMW and Mercedes have for their roof retraction that folds into the trunk. Engineers are awesome.
Fowler flaps are amazing. Very complicated design. Studied this in engineering. All Boeing 737, 727s use this. The idea is not to drop the flaps down in one piece like a Cessna. But three different flaps in sequence. That still allows airflow to get threw each gap. Each flap is designed like a wing. Air flows between each flap. Thus reducing drag and creating lift
Excellent video. I've been a computer animation artist for twenty-five years. I do freelance visualization of new products or mechanical inventions as well as architectural visualization (who else could appreciate the complicated study and work you put into this video). My Boeing 757 model was used in a feature film in 2008. My rigged model was purchased from a 3D model site by a CG artist in the film production team and used in the film for which I got a film credit. I found your video because I was looking to improve my model package by making my rigging more complete. I needed to know more about the motion paths of the flaps themselves, not necessarily the mechanical linkages to them -- I can fake the linkages for such a model but it's totally fascinating to see an accurate representation of all the components and their movements. Thanks for your incredibly hard work.
Very good video. I've seen other videos that show all the movement from an outside perspective, but seeing this demonstration of the internal mechanism at work is more interesting. Fascinating stuff, good work. 👍
Always fascinated by the mechanical engineering involved in coming up with these mechanisms. I want to know how it is calculated i.e. for x motion I need y linkage.
A primeira vez que eu vi este tipo de flaps foi num lockeed Lodestar, há muito tempo. The first time i saw the Flower flaps was a long time ago in the Lockeed Lodestar.
I am not a pilot but I love aviation. I enjoy learning it. I play flight simulator too. I really don't understand the purpose ( if not the reason ) of disliking this video.I guess it's the " how-did - I -end-up-here syndrome "
It can get more complex than this--the B737 Classics have not just a main flap and aft flap, but also a fore flap that extends forward from the main flap. There are two of these triple sections on each wing, for a total of twelve moving surfaces. And then there are the leading edge devices--flaps and slats coordinated with the trailing edge flaps shown here. Plus the hydraulics, drive motors, position indicators, and protection systems. Low landing speeds from high speed wings do not come cheaply.
@@crsvetteii1753 Leading edge flaps and slats both exist, and they are slightly different. Slats are leading edge flaps that create an air gap or "slot" between the flap and the main wing. Standard leading edge flaps do not have the slot. Most jets, business size and up have slats. Smaller, high performance aircraft like fighters that use a fly-by-wire system (computer controlled flight surfaces) typically use leading edge flaps. The F-16 is a prime example of a leading edge flap design.
I wonder how do this mechanism can hold the wind force in such hi speed, in thousand landing and take off cycle in every condition (clear, rain, snow, etc)? Such an engineering art
What makes this a Fowler flap and not just a flap? Is it the bottom hinged part of the flap? I can see how hinging it like that allows it to be more curved but I could still think of the whole assembly as one flap
I think fowler flaps are several slotted flaps in "serie". If there was only one flap going back and going down, that would be a single slotted flap- If you have 2 or more different flaps in the same setup (2 in the animation above but old Boeing have 3 flaps in serie, i.e. started with the B727 and continued with the B737, 757, 767 all the way to the 747) that would be fowler flaps
Great video though imho it'd be even better if you included graphics of the airflow so viewers not in the know can see what the purpose of Fowler flaps is?
With triple trailing edge Fowler Flaps , each with a flow director, together with outboard Handley Page Leading Edge Slats, & L.E. Inboard Kruger Flaps, The Boeing 727-100 & 200 Series win the 'Flap Parade' & in a big way.
Flaps, hehe, funny. Flaps that fowl as well. Splendid work but it’s The fish! O its the fish I was actually looking for the painter but as I've eaten a vast quantity of this fish over the years its only right that I enjoy your video. MMMMM flan, theres nothing finer than a good flan, well maybe theres cheese cake too? I wonder can you combine them? That would be an interesting experience I think also I do enjoy memes but why would you play a game for 2 weeks? It’s a tough one however if you have nothing else in your life.... anyway It’s been a while but this reminds me about the tragedy & of the importance of listening to First Nations people’s who have a lot more about them but Condensing the whole world into 19 minutes is a fascinating experiment & your presentation style is very entertaining as well as informative although I’ve never knowingly eaten steamed hams & if I did I’d just like to know about it first, maybe they could use Advertising is a very intriguing game & Pronunciation is a very unique thing, It’s interesting, we see the tank aim, fire etc but at what? We only get a tiny perspective on what’s actually going on. With that in mind Fascinating to see the inside of the machine in this way however have you ever wondered about the consequences of Spraying stuff into the air has been going on for many years and this is Huge! That’s what this is, but LGR has, to my mind, a fantastic voice, like me but This is fascinating indeed, when I was growing up and even now Twonk was & is a lighthearted insult, but you’ve taken it & created an alien collection of sound which whilst It’s good to see these little hidden gems that stop you being tired & deflated because it is terrible. I mean you try to keep your chin up & then it starts to blow up. You see it’s the leopard not the panther that makes sense. But then does making sense really mean everything it’s meant too, Ben! Legend. But Ben is not alone there are loads out there You see! Snow! We love the stuff don’t we? I think I’ve caused someone some consternation this morning. Before the moon set today & the sun took over I posted to social media about the river in that runs through my town was higher than normal, which it is, however the lion doesn’t really appreciate the help of a leopard when they get across the grande. I’d bobble my own head but funds being as they are I can’t afford to get a personalised version of myself What? What is going on? I don’t know but Bruce knows ask him! But When a car travels it too has to compete with the fluid we live in but it’s very easy to be an idiot & it’s easy to be careful too. It’s easy because all you have to do is concentrate on But I find water a real drag, haha, fluid dynamics are complex & simple simultaneously I mean it’s something that we all deal with constantly but just how much do we actually understand Products. To produce is a real skill but it consumes too. So you simultaneously create & destroy Sharks? Sharks are blunt nosed idiot eating machines that spend their time wasting it. When the challenge gets better then you can get it to be a better way of keeping your brain going. When I see kids running around blasting music and it’s hate all over the place I don’t want them to be like that & ruin their lives. When I do that I dint get the same result. Here’s the thing about that, we are individuals with our own experiences and If hair was currency then I’d be so poor you would respect my ability even open my eyes and gaze upon your vizog I haven’t got a square head so why depict me with one? That’s a tad rude. But and it’s a bit one, I’ve gotten to see that if I’d planned it you can bet I’d have spent all my time traveling Crosses & all that wooden stuff nailed together can be very very disturbing to the unarmed people that bolt when I’m on the train I’ll just take ya to the second degree and then let’s get together and get some stuff together I can do something else to make sure I’m doing it right. When I want to get angry I’d see you there and then I’ll be happy with ya. It’s such a lovely day today. The weather isn’t brilliant but it’s not crap and that is what is important. To say that I watch you would be a, well an untruth. I hate untruths they get everywhere & hang around the place making it look drab & boring so If I didn’t know it already then I’m not going to learn it now am I? So there I go typing that word again and I find out that it’s you! Wow! Love it lol, With that in mind, and I’ve got to admit I agree with you totally, blyat. I’m squatting right now in your honour. Dear lady you spend so much time on this that you will get your life together soon and then I’ll be happy. Those late 90s styled fonts are such a retro touch. Thank you & for goodness sake you have got to go out to dinner and then I’ll be back in the town soon. Again I typed the word expecting to see nothing, and here you are, When a person spends time in the sun with friends it’s always a pleasure being there. When the people who have been received in the waiting room they spend a fair bit of time on their phones this can cause others to grumble. I hope that you can understand how much more of the money will be made in data transfer costs, with that in mind, the leopard in winter is great.
Sorry, can´t remember. It was one of copyright free from RU-vid Audio Library. Maybe you can find it there by filtering genre/mood/instrumental ru-vid.com
It´s a system of bones and dummies (that are visible but not renderable). Aeach bone is linked to a certain part of the flaps. You can see how it works searching "rigging bones". Here´s one good example: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cm7OP3niwvI.html (My 3ds Max file is long time ago lost after my PC crashed)
"What" is that the design...which varies a tad from aircraft to aircraft...alloows for acetpable landing and takeoff speeds and more, technically, the maintenance of greater, more rapid thrust response in jet engines! Sorry to make you think a bit.
+Indra Fadly It´s my own modelling and animation. Original source file not available online. Another my flaps animation here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n0exujK07y0.html Also landing gear animation here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WZylvhr6rYw.html
+rexxxtube i have a school project to create a fowler flap, do you mind if I use your design? And could you please kindly send me the part geometry of the kinematics above? And ofc, i will put you with the credits! Thank you! Fifadly@gmail.com
+Indra Fadly You can use my video but no file available. I´d like to help you, but to be a good student you´ll have to solve the kinematics problem with your own effort as I did. Took me days, but it was good for my brain cells development.
fishodorvagina Hey, the 747 works with Krueger Flaps, they are placed where the slats should be, so basically the 747 does not have slats but Krueger Flaps
David Aranguren - you're talking about the leading edge flaps/slats. The trailing edge flaps on a 747 classic and -400 are triple slotted fowler flaps. The exception is the -SP, which has a simpler flap design, and the 747-8, which I think has single slotted flaps.
I don´t think so. I have found some older blueprints and modeled and animated them. It´s just one of many published patents. I don´t know which planes use this design.
Sorry, I am just a graphic designer, not a mechanical engineer to teach the subject. It was a challenge for me to rig flaps elements in 3d program and to leave to experts to demonstrate and explain.
