It's definitely time for an update video. There are way more cores now, and the setup and update processes have been vastly improved. The devs have been busy for the two years since this video was posted.

Damned straight. I've long been put off by the crazy high prices of fPGA hobby boards, but this one seems to be absolutely incredible. The Cyclone V had 4x as many gates as the previous Cyclone III, and the price is wicked low. Very surprising.

It's not just about accuracy. Input Lag is also far less using an FPGA vs Software Emulation. The MISTer software also has a fast polling mode for USB ports which reduces input lag all the way down to a single Millisecond. It does also depend on what USB devices you use. There is a very handy spreadsheet floating around that shows the input lag of many input devices on the MISTer.

It's great to see an FPGA product like this. This is something I was imagining a few years ago when I first heard about FPGA for retro gaming, before the saga of the Coleco Chameleon. But my interest in FPGA for gaming was at its peak a couple of years ago. I've done the original-hardware thing and still have all of that stuff, but I prefer software emulation at this point. It does what I want and works very well for me. It doesn't bother me that FPGA could be(with proper cores) more accurate in ways I'd probably never notice. But I'm glad to see an option like this for those who are interested. It's nice to see how far things have come. When I first learned of FPGA gaming, SNES and Genesis cores seemed like they were a long way off.

1:51 Slight correction... DE10 Nano... 110,000 Logic Elements, with dual-core ARM SoC. Super NT... 49,000 Logic Elements (IIRC), no ARM SoC. They are both from the Cyclone V series, but quite different in other ways. But yes, the DE10 Nano and MiSTer platform are great.I've been saying it for over a year. :p

btw, I'm not saying that the DE10 Nano / MiSTer is overall "better" just because of the chip specs. The Analogue stuff is awesome too, but they have different markets and aims. ;)

I wonder if it's because he isn't set on PAL which runs slower than NTSC right? The sound seemed faster
@dutchdykefinger
@dutchdykefinger 5 лет назад
oh yeah, Sonic on the genesis/megadrive was a prime example of PAL / NTSC sound playback speed, it's massive, i grew up with the slow ass PAL songs, i didn't even know as a kid lol
@sabin1981
@sabin1981 5 лет назад
haha, same! I'm from the UK and the PAL "slower" songs were what I grew up with, so much so that when I finally played NTSC versions years later... I hated them! The sound was too fast xD To this day, 25 years later, I still prefer the PAL/UK version of Outrun 2019 over the, technically correct, NTSC/US version.
@ModernRelik
@ModernRelik 5 лет назад
Another excellent video! As a UK viewer and owner of the Master System I have to say that everything was perfect apart from the sound. The pitch and speed were increased over what it should be. It could be a simple fix by choosing PAL in the settings. Otherwise it was a perfect emulation. A big thank you for the effort you put into sharing your hobby with us.

@ToploadedGaming
@ToploadedGaming 5 лет назад
Harrison Hacks This, I have the avs fpga. I have a sony bravia tv. I do think that the avs is not lagging, however, I do not know of what tv I can use to not experience any lag whatsoever. The real test is tyson. I can beat tyson, but on a crt. Using my avs and my bravia, its off. I would imagine this would be no different than my avs on my bravia. Since they are both fpga’s. I mean, do we need a lag calibration thing on these fpga’s similar to guitar hero? I dont know what the answer is but as long as HDTV’s have lag, its still a problem. Just because the FPGA isn’t causing it doesnt mean that its not a problem anymore. But, for nearly every game out there, it isn’t an issue, and for people that don’t intend on beating very difficult games, its not at all an issue for them.
@jrose5080
@jrose5080 5 лет назад
I can beat Mike Tyson Punch Out using the Analogue NT mini and LG 43UK6300 as it has lag around 10-12 ms ... so less that 1 frame. Now the NT mini runs just a fraction slower than the original if I am not mistaken so I figure it is really close to a CRT. So it can be done and I agree it is the true test for lag in my book.

When people are talking about the MiSTer they should really talk more about the potential this thing has for the future. Don't try to tell people that all the cores work flawlessly just because these are FPGA emulation. This already supports many different cores and a lot of them work very well, but some still have issues and are being worked on. It will take time until a core is "perfect". The best thing about the MiSTer seems to be that it is now picking up a lot of steam and will probably improve significantly in the coming months.

@OldsXCool

@No No Razor sharp accuracy sounds way cooler on paper than it does in practice. The fact that software based emulation has gotten as close as it has to the real thing is a testiment to that statement. Will FPGA be great as it matures? Most likely yes, but it won't be the game changer you think it will be because software based emulation already kicks ass and has been kicking ass longer than FPGA and it is still improving in more ways than just accuracy. It is also emulating machines that FPGA can't even dream about right now. I'm just going to leave it at that.

If you are going to do Master System, here are my recommendations: Ghostbusters, Phantasy Star, Black Belt, all of Alex Kidd games, Fantasy Zone 2, Aztec Adventure, R-type. I never owned a Master System, but I played lots of it with relatives and friends... those titles I could tell from start if they were being properly emulated or not. xD Also, great find... I didn't think there were dev style boards with the FPGA chip in there to reproduce what Analogue was doing. Kudos!

I see you're using the MakerSpot USB Hub - so am I... My question is, where did you get the longer Standoffs for the bottom? My DE10 Nano's bottom standoffs are shorter, and if I move the stock plastic plate to the bottom, the USB hub won't fit on the bottom. Did you source longer standoffs for your bottom plate, or did they come with yours?

Definitely test Gargoyles on your Megadrive core. It, and some other games, exploited a bug in the Megadrive 1 and 2 consoles which were corrected for the Genesis 3 (I don't think that got a Megadrive branded release), and without which, the game doesn't run correctly. Gargoyles shouldn't actual load and run properly on a "correctly" implemented core. Any other games which use the TAS opcode in-game shouldn't run properly if the Megadrive core is made to spec, and not to reality.

At the MASTER SYSTEM section, you could play Califonia Games and Alexx Kidd in Miracle World. These games have some sound issues in emulation.

my dream would be arcade wonder boy in monsterland and Black Tiger, both arcades, but I don't see them yet....hopefully this assemblage of boards will become a full fledge product...not many people want to buy and assemble pieces...we need a one piece console with included professional joysticks and pads....300 euro console.

ETA Prime, in the future for odd battery sizes, maybe see if there is a Batteries Plus location in your area. They have all kinds of stuff.

Do you consider something like the darksoft cps2 multi emulation?

Sound is also off in Master System. Again tho, all of these cores were fairly early in development when this video was made so they have surely been fixed by now.

There's a Neo Geo FPGA project on GitHub, but the sound is not there yet. Hopefully one day this will become a core for mister.

Its interesting. FPGA code can be compiled to run on other FPGAs so theoretically one could use the code Kevtris has made for Analog and compile it on this DE-10 Nano. FPGA is King!

Amazing looking device, simply amazing, and a pretty goddamn good price too! $130 for a fully capable fPGA paired with an ARM Cortex secondary proc? Very nice indeed. Probably the best value fPGA I've seen yet, even if you do need to buy a €19/ish SDRAM addon board for most cores --- though I continue to be eternally disappointed there's still no public fPGA SNES core :( .... which bugs me because there is obviously a fully functional, fully working, SuperFX/SA-1 compatible!!!!!, SNES core for fPGA as it's included in the Analog SuperNT, yet nothing publicly available for hobby board users. Seriously bugs me to no end.

Talking for the examples output what i seen results of the game play video outputs. I can’t see any advantage&differences during to game play. Raspberry does same&better results for the same games. What I’m missing here?
