If you're having difficulties filming the menu due to the interference that's showing, you can actually change it to other built in backgrounds or just have it completely black. When you have the OSD up just press F1 on a keyboard to cycle through the different background options, that should help you.

I bought a 'Mist' box a couple of years ago and it is really good for 8 bit and 16 bit machine recreation. I mainly use it for the Amiga core. I've not seen anything yet with the Mister that separates the two but I guess with the larger FPGA SNES ought to be possible

Amiga OS 3.9.1 was recently released. It would be great if you could include that on the Amiga review and check out the performance in Sysbench to get an idea of how the performance is next to vintage hardware. Frontier, Nemac IV and Formula One Grand Prix are all good games to test the system performance to the limits. The games I enjoyed most on this system are Beneath a Steel Sky (you will want that one installed on to your Workbench environment as the disk swapping with 8 floppies is a pain in the ass), Barbarian, James Pond: Robocod and Speedball 2.

I wonder whether all-new cores will be written to make these boards a good target for brand new games to be published for it. If a core was wriiten to implement a retro-style system, but without the quirks of old-school designds, and perhaps with specifications adapted to maximize capacity of the FPGA, this could be rather cool. Like, something that implements a top-notch old school 2d tile engine along with a genesis-style sound systems with simple instruction set for the cpu... I dunno, it could work. Now, if there was some way to change the fpga configuration during runtime... say per-level... that would be hella cool.

Tbh I think it would be even cooler if someone design a retro style new hw on this machines so that people can develop new games on a new retro platform. We already have this in software with fantasy consoles (Pico8 is the more popular at the moment) I don't see why an hw solution wouldn't work.
@jameslewis2635
@jameslewis2635 5 лет назад
@@MasterControl90original The ability to mix in expansions would be pretty cool. Like an Amiga core with a Picasso IV graphics card or a wave table for better music. A second FPGA would also be pretty good. I'm just thinking about the first core as the CPU and core components and the second as a GPU in effect which would be great for emulating earlier PC's such as Windows 98 systems.

@danieljimenez1989

@@ReikazeRambles The games themselves wouldn't have to be coded in verilog, of course, just the core. If this hipotethical mister core was implemented, it would include a cpu module within it to process instructions from the game rom just like the PC Engine or MegaDrive cores do right now. It's clear you could code the programs in C, like you could code a gba homebrew game these days. The key would be to design a simple architecture that is flexible and powerful. I dunno, maybe an arm core with a VDP-like display processor with added snes-like bg rotation and a nice 6 or 8-channel chiptune engine would fit.

Still love ya Mr. Prime keep up the good work you do.
@BigMacIIx
@BigMacIIx 5 лет назад
DaVidKid1877 , your missing the whole point of this device and why enthusiasm are so hype about it. You are right, software emulation is more than enough for the majority, but FPGA can do what software emulation can’t. With FPGA, you simulate/replicate the hardware at logic and signal level, so you can interface with the hardware like the real thing that includes being able to read original carts, controllers and analog RGB out with addons boards to the DE10. All of that with the exact timing of the original hardware (giving how good the core is program).
@DaVidKid1877
@DaVidKid1877 5 лет назад
@@BigMacIIx so basically fpga is a programmable chip that emulates the original chip in whatever device you choose? For example the fpga chip could be programmed to act as a super fx SNES chip? Am I understanding this or am I way off lol. I just don't want to spend the money because I have no knowledge of PC building or what is compatible with what and all that. I can barely figure out how it to get games set up on game station turbo lol but raspberry pi and odroid I'm pretty good.
@BigMacIIx
@BigMacIIx 5 лет назад
@@DaVidKid1877 Your basic understanding is right, look at FPGA like a bunch of logic units you can interconnect the way you want via software, at the end you're not emulating software but simulating the hardware. With FPGA you can have a modular approche so you can replicate multiple chips and a whole system components on one FPGA, so you can have a whole SNES and extra chip like the SuperFX simulated on the same FPGA if it contain enough logic units to do so. Right now there is some mass market retrogaming FPGA solution like the Analogue NT, those are easy to use but pricy, the project MisTer and the DE10-Nano board at its current state are really for enthusiast. Also FPGA emulation is currently limited to 8bits and 16 bits era hardware, so forget about more powerful hardware like the PS1 or the Dreamcast.
@hjups
@hjups 5 лет назад
@@BigMacIIx There are parts of a PS1 core scattered throughout github (I know of someone who is working on assembling them), so PS1 would definitely be possible (past projects only failed due to issues with getting the thing to boot with the Sony BIOS). Also, it is very likely that a PS1 core could fit in the DE10-Nano, but I doubt that anything more complicated would (so probably no Dreamcast, and no N64). @DaVidKid1877 That's basically right from your view of the MisTer menu (the thing where you select which core to run). In reality, the FPGA is more configured than programmed, which can be thought of as telling the device which switches to open and close so that the transistors in the FPGA connect in effectively the same way as in the original hardware (in reality it does this through a series of binary look up tables and switches). So from that perspective, it can basically be configured to act like any integrated circuit / chip / groups of chips as long as they fit within the device (it has a large number of switches, just not an unlimited amount - The FPGA on the DE10-Nano probably has enough to configure something as complex as the PS1). As Étienne Gauthier said, you could basically take every chip that was in the SNES, as well as any chip that was within the game cartridges, and connect them together within the single FPGA, and have it produce identical behavior to the original hardware (the Analogue NT did this minus the cartridge chips). Hopefully that extra info wasn't confusing. If you are concerned with the complexity of setting up MisTer, there are several videos on youtube with people going through the setup process which you can look at before making a decision to buy an expensive board (they are all under 30 minutes long, so that should give some context in how difficult it is).

@Tom Landolt I’ve never try the Pi emulation, but FPGA is in a completely different league than software emulation. FPGAs simulate the hardware at logic/signal level, therefore it can achieve true to the original hardware response and generally don’t have issue that come with timing, like audio and controller latency, video and audio drops and glitch’s. Giving a good enough programmer, and FPGA is only limited by its numbers of programmable units. Misters have a full 486 PC core, and many more arcade cores, but I doubt the DE10 have a big enough fpga for 3D hardware like the Saturn or the PS1.

@hjups
@hjups 5 лет назад
@@winstonsmith478 The FPGA used by the DE10 board can be reprogrammed effectively an infinite number of times, since the configuration (program) is stored in internal Read Only SRAM (it's cleared when the device is powered off), which is written by the companion processor (running the MisTer Interface). It would be more accurate to say that the devices are configured when they start up as opposed to programmed (basically a really long binary stream which tells the device which switches to open and close). Étienne Gauthier Some low-end FPGAs are flash based, like the Altera / Intel MAX 10 FPGA. Those have a maximum number of write cycles of around 10k, and lack the serial programming interface that more expensive FPGAs like the Cyclone series have.

This is a lot cheaper then real hardware. Not to mention if you want to collect for PC Engine or TurboGrafx the games are expensive now even though the PC Engine side is cheaper its still a bit expensive to get certain games. You also have access to a lot of arcade games, other consoles, and some old computers at a hardware accurate level with this as well.
