man, you can always count on zappa to give an intelligent, eloquent, and dryly, subtly hilarious interview. and you know, demento is a big dork with canned questions, but he's genuine and doesn't get offended by frank - he's all right!

1:44 "When you think of the mechanics of film distribution, you have the same problem in getting good ideas onto the screen as you have in getting good ideas on television or even good ideas on the radio. You really can't do it. You can't even get good ideas in the newspaper. If you have a good idea, keep it to yourself. This is America, folks."

This was fantasic, thank you for posting! I remember discovering Dr Demento and Zappa audio cassettes at my public library when I was a kid and I knew I stumbled on a goldmine. Still a massive fan almost 30 years later.

And everything he said (especially at the end) WAS right and still IS right.

Frank is one thoughtful and intense dude. I wish he were still around.... his voice is sorely missed in these (still messed up) times. ...He definitely should have mentioned the name of the animator on baby snakes, Bruce Bickford, an insanely talented artist in his own right.

Zappa so serious as an artist (realistic, cynical, political), the good Dr. somehow keeps a straight face with fabulous dry humour and sarcasm that it makes me cry with laughter. This said, I need to buy a top had like Dr. D. Zappa does throw such philosphical zingers such as, "you only meet great disappointments when you have great expectations."
@ABigMetalFan
@ABigMetalFan 5 лет назад
"...and to have great expectations in your fellow man in a place like this, has got to lead to heartbreak and remorse." The man was a genius.

Dr. Demento was disturbingly twitchy throughout and listened with his mouth open.

How do you think he would have felt about Ilhan Omar and and Occasional Cortex? Frank was a Free Speech person. The modern Left is anything but. If comedians can’t go on College campuses, how do you think Frank Zappa would have fared?

Oh dear: Zappa nails it again. Yes, movies were a party with an expense account - if it made money, great. If not... Hollywood always had people lined up. Glad he had a good time, cause we sure did.

I guess he changed his mind about what he said at the end of the interview, which makes me happy. Seeing him on tv lambasting the religious right was very entertaining and I think it did have an effect to embarrass them and open them to wider ridicule that they didn't expect and didn't enjoy much.

Dr.D. is simply doing his zig zag best to bring Frank to a Straight audience. Interviews are not easy, the best (like Terri Gross) make it sound laid back and easy, but it isn't. She gets to cut out the "uhs" and the "uhms:" and other non-essentials that the Doc has to live with here. Good Stuff to see the Raw in action!

I LOVE Dr. Demento, but he appears like he's going to shit his pants in this interview. I keep waiting for him to ask "Uhm, member when you were with the Mothers of Invention? Remember that?" ;-)

It seems like the early 80s was about the last time anyone remotely avant-garde or experimental could get on network TV (even late night) for this length of time. (Laurie Anderson was on network TV a lot, too).

Americans are kinda like us Canadians as I see it Individualy awsome as hell even the guys that are going to plook the hell out of me for this comment.But as the Moral Majority we all need a lot of work I just wish guys like F.Z and G.C were still around to help guide us to our faults and make us laugh along the way.Thats what I look for in an entertainer.
