Watching Mr Donaldson's speech to his daughter for the first time made me realize that Mary's speech to her husband on his 50th birthday was no accident.
Bravo to the Dane's for welcoming this beautiful classy woman into the Royal family. Her father obviously so intensely proud of her and all she's accomplished. So, sad though her mother couldn't witness this wonderful moment in her daughter's life.
The Joy, Sincerity, Warmth, Respect, Love, Elegance, & Honesty in all these wonderful people is Genuine!! NO camera seeking, NO publicity motivated, NO money hungry/ petty individuals in attendance at this ceremony!! So nice to see CIVILITY & CLASS & DIGNITY. So different than our callous, cheap & tawdry world we experience daily in the US.. and now, the UK. LONG LIVE & PROSPER ROYALS OF DENMARK!!
What a terrific father of the bride speech! He hit all the points: graciousness to host and new in-laws, love and pride of daughter, acknowledgement of his late wife, compliments and welcome to new son-in-law, and pithy quote at the end. Also not overlong and beginning on a humorous note. I'm not surprised to learn that Mr. Donaldson is a professor so is comfortable with public speaking even if the audience includes royal heads of Europe.
Oh, lovely! I think this must be my favorite royal wedding in memory: the bride and groom are straight out of a fairy tale, and this father of the bride speech was so heartfelt... Mr Donaldson must have been quite a handsome devil in his youth, too, to be so dashing in his later years

I have listened to his marvellous speech before, but as I listen, really listen to all the messages, especially about Mary's mother missing this her wonderful day, if I was Mary I would be crying my eyes out.The message he gave to Frederik was of a wonderful supportive father-in-law.From reading about Mr Donaldson I see a very fine man with a great sense of humour.I am in Canada and he is one person I would enjoy meeting. Now almost 13 yrs later he has 4 beautiful grandchildren from this couple. Too bad they live so far apart.God bless you Mr. Donaldson. Thank you.
Mary’s father and stepmom lived in Denmark for a period of time during the early years of her marriage to Frederick. John was working as a professor at the University of Aarhus. I know this because friends of ours were living there and were in the same Danish class as Mary’s stepmom, Susan. I don’t know how long John and Susan lived there but they were definitely living in Denmark at the time of Prince Christian’s birth.
From whence a prospective mate comes from in terms of family is very important. Mary's father shows she comes from class. The family of the mate of Prince Harry should have been a flaming red flag for him.

His confidence and poise in what would have made most shrink under the pressure of a royal state occasion, is remarkable. I wonder what his career was. Handsome man as well. Daughter is lovely.

The Donaldsons left Scotland, and went to the other side of the world, only for one of their daughters to end up as Queen of Denmark. That's quite the tale.

Thats what a great bride's fathers speech is supposed to be like: Smart and thought-provoking, warm and emotional, honest and authentic, encouraging and mixed up with some kind of self ironical, good hearted humour...
