Freewing A-10 THUNDERBOLT II Super Scale Twin 80mm EDF Jet PNP: ESSENTIAL RC FLIGHT TEST (Motion RC)

With all my recent filming of turbine A-10s I had to have the nearest thing. One of the 'Essential RC' team had told me Motion RC had opened an EU warehouse so after a quick stock check on their web site I made the order. It shipped same day and was with me 2 days later! Building time is very quick. Simple assembly takes 30-60 minutes. Applying the water type decals takes several hours if you want to apply them all. I used two Optipower 100C 5S6000 lipo packs. Achieving CG was easy at about 85mm from leading edge. The video shows take off from a very short strip. Although possible it's not recommended. Having a more aft CG and holding in the elevator until the front wheel is off the deck is a must to achieve it. A fully aerobatic flight. Enough power. You can retrofit 90mm fan units but I don't see the need unless you want unlimited vertical but at the cost of less flight time. I timed for 4.5 minutes which gave me 15-20% left in the packs. The landing was overshot on this video. First time flying the A-10 at this flight. In hindsight should have made a lower approach. The descent gave me extra speed on touchdown I didn't need!
All in all a spectacular and big EDF jet. Not cheap but considering it's size and it's plug'n'play format it's fair. Building something like this from scratch would be a lot more expensive. The included ordnance set is fragile, especially the sidewinders but 3D printed replacement versions can be found in thingiverse.com.

Really is. Can't get enough of it. Just wish I had somewhere better to fly it. Very risky flying it at that site. Only just gets in the air before the end of the runway. Cheers Dom (Essential RC)

Thanks David. Was a bit shabby actually compared to how I flew it on the weekend before. Quite a tight closed in site for flying a model like this. Felt like the 4 point rolls etc were rushed and not sharp. Was good to get it on video though. Couldn't video myself flying at the weekend :>) Cheers Dom (Essential RC)

VERY nice shooting and flying! And that’s a great plane, ain’t it? I wish I could do some informative talking like you do, but I can never stop joking around for 2 minutes. Maybe we could borrow yours! And here’s a tip- the missiles fit PERFECTLY onto the wingtip mounts of the Freewing 70mm F-16!

Looks like a good pavement take off and land jet. Personally I don't like grass, and have a good spot with landing lights. It's a school and the only problem is football season which makes landing like an extremely busy airport. The wind is consistent along the length, in the winter it's got some wicked crosswinds.

+1 Very good for hard runways. Grass is always going to tear at the landing gear, gear doors and ordnance. I have to travel 60 mins to my nearest flying club with a paved runway unfortunately. Cheers Dom (Essential RC)

i just bought this plane, gently used and have been searching videos. Yours was very informative. Can you tell me if you used a gyro? I really don't know much about programming them. And few of my planes have one. Also would a 5000 MaH battery be acceptable? Thanks for any input! Kurt

5000 to 6000mah packs are good. Heavier packs might stress the landing gear too much on landing. Gyro isn't necessary although it might help on a windy day. The cheap gyros from MotionRC are good. I use gyro features in Frsky receivers.

Liked the video, I know we always think that we can be critical,but I don’t want you guys to think that. Mr essential rc would 2 6s 6500mah lipos be too heavy for this airplane?

Hmmm. It will fly OK but the issue will be the landing as it will be relatively heavy. You should definitely get the nose gear brace 3D printed. Look on thingiverse.com for additional parts for the Freewing A-10 to make the landing gear stronger. Personally I think the FMS A-10 V2 is much better. Slightly smaller but only takes one 6S pack.

Mr. Dom Nice Flying as usual, I feel inspired! Freewing I hurd you say the A-10 was expensive, It makes sense but can you help me understand how All over RU-vid I was seeing adds for F-14,F-16,and couple nice helicopters for 19.99$ Seen it enough I spent the 29$ with tax on My favorite Aircraft of all times The Star of the Top Gun movie F-14,twin 80mm EDF's! How in the hell is it possible I don't know but am I getting something different than what I think is on the way or is it a Scam Job, can you see why I could not pass up something I have NO CLUE AS HOW TO FLY BUT I THOUGHT I DO have a Ace pilot I can get to fly it some and It will make a very very Cool Art for my Man cave till I got the balls,and skills to take it up my self! Did I do good or thought away 30$ on what else could it be except a lower grade model but 30 $ dosen't get you far up in the sky so took the rick! Did I already ask you this and to told me some disappointing New or was I dreaming Honest. I in fact Dream of RC as well as TRY To live it as well ,hope hear good things back ether way I rather hear good or bad from you! My apologies for inappropriate comment,I only ment your very good at building,filming and flying .! You and one other person are my goto for all thing RC I think bringing this much attention to the sport ,Hobbie I don't know maybe you do get payed. Is it possible to make a living being able to fry, film, and help bring action to compenys gaining from your work?

Make a living? There are a small number of RC RU-vidrs that have achieved that. Maybe 2 I know of. Everything I earn from RU-vid I reinvest back into buying new equipment or models to review. I have a day job that pays the bills and luckily I really enjoy it. Cheers Dom (Essential RC)

7:12 never try and knife edge with a jet. Ever. The airframes aren’t designed for that kind of stress.

It's not a problem at all with epo foam. I've seen balsa fall apart in the air doing a knife edge but never foam. I have several edf jets and never had any issues knife edging.
