Freewing A-10 Thunderbolt - Maiden with Rough Landing

This plane is most DEFINITELY not the EFlite A-10. Different planes, different size power systems, different size planes....Freewing is BEAUTIFUL, but much MUCH harder to fly and land. EFlite is a GREAT plane, and waaaaayyyyyy better ;)

Yeah, only issue I didn't get 100% after this rough landing was the stupid hinged nose gear door, which will catch on the faux wheel oleo (I think that's what it's called - the triangle shaped thing on the rear of the nose landing gear strut). Now when I give too much rudder, the oleo will catch and prevent the gear from returning to home (center) position - PUKE! Love the plane otherwise. It's not an everyday flying in my book. It looks SOOOOOOOOO good, but it's kinda tough to manage the ground effect, in my opinion...but that's not gonna stop me flying, only cause heart attacks when I do!

I have had VERY good luck with them. I think they pack more value, in that they are simpler to use than an AR636, and very reliable too! However, I also have had very good luck with my AR636's. I think spektrum makes great stuff, but they are pretty proud of it, and the price reflects this...

I prefer XT90's for that size lipo... OR just the big red hextronix ones...EC5's are impossible to plug and unplug in my experience. What issues are you having???

Thanks for watching and for the comment! I got the flaps/elevator adjustment worked out between this and the second flight. I ended up with about 15% down adjustment for full deflection (if I'm remembering right). This video was the maiden, so I just hadn't had a chance to get the adjustment made in the flap mode menu yet. I have other edf's that have been pretty underwhelming, but this plane really has the power I expect when I think of a "jet". Quick spool up and ample power! What a beautiful plane, but the beauty definitely comes at a cost, as it is heavy. It flies and handles well in the air, even at "slow" speed, but it still lands "Fast" and does need a good roll out, as I've found on flights two and three (which were MUCH better landings) I still haven't had a good greasy landing yet with this plane, as I'm still working out the nerves of a beautiful new plane I don't want to ding up! Don't think AMA will be covering anything for me, since I'm not a member. I fully expect to be paying for any damaged I cause out of pocket, or with my homeowners if I ever have a "real" accident. I recognize there are risk involved in this hobby, both to me and those around me, and I take a lot of precautions to help mitigate these risks for each situation. People's safety is always high on my list, but I'm also careful to protect property too. Make no mistake about it, there are risks in this hobby, but such is life! I'm not gonna live in a cave, but I will be careful to minimize others risk when, where, and how I'm flying. I love doing it too much to let every conceivable worst case scenario stop me from enjoying the hobby.

I had an early Starmax A-10 up for a maiden, and the wings folded up- right over somebody's brand new Escalade. Hit the ground about a foot behind their bumper. They were laughing. Must have had the armored Escalade. I changed my shorts and got back to flying. On the other side of the field.

This plane has proven to be tougher to fly that I hoped. I have the Horizon Hobby A-10 box sitting in my entry way, taunting me as I come in late from work - LOL - I want to get it unboxed, assembled, and flying. I trust it'll be way better than this freewing, but I'm cautiously optimistic, given my experience with the Freewing.

Why do people fly in parking lots and on desertrd roads etc? Are ther not flying clubs in their ares?

You will LOVE the Eflite version. This Freewing version was garbage compared to the eflite one

I do not like the Stabilizer Plus, but the Stabilizer is very good. The auto leveling feature is "there" but I've never got it to work the way they say it should. If you have the option in the future, and you are going to buy another, here's what I recommend... Lemon-Rx 7Ch DSMX Rx w/ Stabilizer + Diversity Antenna - amzn.to/2CP2EoC Lemon-Rx 7Ch DSMX Rx w/ Stabilizer + Satellite - amzn.to/2F8f3Se ...vs what you got, here... Lemon RX DSMP/X 7Ch Rx w/ Stabilizer PLUS + Diversity Antenna (End-Pin) LM0044 - amzn.to/2D19ZOI Here's a couple quick issues with the Plus part... 1) It's really tough to setup right. 2) Auto-leveling doens't seem to work (but I may be doing it wrong) 3) The Stabilizer just turns on, with almost no initial startup time, but the Plus needs to start in a level and true attitude...which can be a pain in the butt. 4) No satellite port. 5) Poor instructions for the Plus part (so far...they'll work on it) 6) The price point is a few bucks higher, but I'd be glad to pay a few bucks extra for a solid feature. ....But it's still a very capable, and GREAT Rx, and I really like Lemon-Rx, just not the PLUS part. Hope this helps.

Oh, yeah, one more thing...the A-10 in this video has the Stabilization, not the Stabilization Plus. I have the Stabilization Plus in my Arcus M, if you're wanting to see it in action.

Thanks Rudy! Glad to help how I can. Out of most all of my planes, this one is one of the best looking, but for whatever reason, I've had a pretty hard time flying it...or transporting it...I can't put my finger on what about this plane has caused it to stay on my shop ceiling so much.

No, it was a super simple fix. I've only recently started filming lots of repairs. It is fine now.

This plane likes to fly FASSSST...and when you do get her tamed into a nice smooth landing, she rolls like crazy! These freewing wheels spin so free!!!

I think the Dynam A-10 probably flies better, or easier. Dynam makes a nice, light, and simple plane. This plans looks amazing, but it's heavy, and flies a lot like a brick...especially when it finally stalls. She goes from "floaty-floater" and turns on a time to a BRICK!!! As for the club, if that's for you, more power to you! Everyone has reasons for what they choose to do.

FAA hammering down unfortunately on our hobby. I not only belong to a club, I carry 2 million in liability insurance through the AMA in case I take someones head off. I respect your views, but it's this kind of flying that's changing the laws against us.

One question...when did you join your club? How long have you been flying? You can have AMA and fly in a club, which are both just fine, but you might want to check into their "mythical" 2 million dollar insurance policy you speak . Good luck filing and getting a claim paid. Have you ever heard of an insurance claim being paid? (I have not - EVER). As I understand it (and I might be wrong since I don't have it, but you should check into it, since you're leaning on it) your policy is a "SECONDARY POLICY" meaning, it does nothing for most people. It only covers what your "PRIMARY POLICY" doesn't cover...meaning, if you don't have a policy (In addition to AMA), you don't have insurance. Secondly, "my type of flying" has NOTHING to do with FAA changing laws. Drones are the reason for the change. I hate that the definition of "drones" is so broad and wide ranging, and I hate that un-elected bureaucrats are trying to strip my freedoms even more!!! If the FAA wanted to actually serve the public, it would be so easy... All they have to do is make a distinction between manned and unmanned "drones" and they'd solve about 90% of the problems. They don't care about our freedoms, if we actually pose a REAL risk to general aviation, or the general public, they want POWER. They want MONEY. They want to make us their subjects, and I for one will fight them at every turn, rather than PAYING for AMA to sidle up to the FAA and userp my rights and privileges as a free citizen. Just because they can dream up some CSI style "terrorist" threat, doesn't mean that they have the authority to take away our freedoms. P.S. I wouldn't talk (publicly) about how much insurance you have, or don't have....it makes you much more vulnerable in court, if you ever have to use it. I have insurance that will actually pay out if the need arises...fyi..not that I owe anyone an explanation.

Thanks for your service! This was an especially bad maiden :(... We fly from this lot all the time, and maybe have one car pull through in hours of being there, so this was an abnormal experience! The cops got called right after this maiden. I don't think whoever called, called about us, as the police officer said it was in response to "drones flying"? They admitted it may have been someone else the caller had complained about, since we were just flying the A-10 and T28... ...either way they were really cool about it. I offered to leave, and they said that'd be a good idea, then I asked if they want to see the T-28 fly before I left, and they said yeah!

It would look better than Mr. Elephantiasis head...

For sure John. She was fixed a few hours later...I may have filmed the repair job. This was a weird day too...the Cops showed up to this site (Where we fly all the time, with permission) and the first one pops out, (we were landed, between flight) and then a second one show up... I asked the first one if he was there to watch, and he said they had a complaint about a "Drone" flying. I said, well, we were flying this plane, and about to fly that one (my T-28B Trojan)...the second cop said he was there to watch (LOL), so hopeful to keep the peace, I asked the first guy a few quick questions, as I could tell he really didn't want to have to respond to "this call", and I offered to take off (pun not yet intended), to which he agreed, it might be a good idea. I asked him well, no problem officer, but you wanted to see the T-28B Trojan fly first - he said, "of course!"...so we flew it, then packed up and left for home. It was weird too, since we've had all sorts of people come and stop to watch, once a fire engine stopped, and three fire fighters hopped out. They said they were bored, LOL! We flew for them for about 15 minutes, of course they were super nice, then the kids when into the engine to check it out....then I decided I'd crash my F-14 for them...LOL. We've also had a few times had cops stop just to watch...once when we (Esteban and I) were flying at night. Those guys thought it was really cool, and maybe it was a drone...it was a Pulse 15, and a couple foam board planes with lots of lights all over them...very fun, another time, they just stopped by during the day, and wanted to watch. We've had people just driving by stop, and folks from the College (staff, who knows who were are, since we're out there all the time) stop with their family, so they could watch. Just lots of cool experienced, almost 100% positive. It kills me when we get the nay-sayers, since they have no idea how positive this hobby can be, they assume they have to go out in the middle of nowhere (not that there's anything wrong with that), but then the populous doens't really even know this is going on!!! We run into ton's of interest, that would have never happened at a "flying field"....in fact, so much that they made the site an AMA site (of which I'm not a member...the AMA that is....). Good times :)

+nhut quang All factory installed 40 Amp ESC with 64mm 12 bladed Fans, running on 4S 2200mAh 60C Zippy Compact. I get about 4.5 min flight times. Plane has seemingly endless vertical for edf, provided you carry some speed into the climb. Beautiful plane. Great slow flight perfomance, but when you hit the stall point, this thing turns into a totaly brick!

I also have the Turbojet, and have had very good and very, very bad landing alike, but the gear are quite resilient ... The gear on this freewing are really very nice, but the plane is also quite heavy if you ask me. It glides like a feather, until it stalls and falls like a brick...very hard to judge the stall coming out of nowhere....hence tough landings. To add insult to injury, the nose has very thin side walls due to the nose gear...which from what I understand it not an uncommon feature on A-10... Thanks for watching!

I try to find your videos on a model when I'm planning to buy a new one :>) and, I think I'm going to pass on this A-10. It is a very nice looking plane but, I'm not a good at landing yet. They say that the F-16 has better landing gear and an upgrade is also available. By the way, I do have the LEMON Rx in all my 20 planes....Great little receiver! Tip on Dynams landing gear: if one of your wheels stay up, toggle the stabilization switch ON/OFF and (in my case) the stuck gear would deploy Regards

No problem! I sure love the Lemon RX gear - All of it is a GREAT value! The A-10 is tough to land, but you said you have 20 planes, so you should be able to handle it. The recommended CG is tough to achieve in this plane, due to the size of the nose, so be careful!!! When you land, just have a long runway, and don't freak out (Like I tend to do...) just relax and the plane will come down. Don't try and flare for good looks, it'll hop on you...just fly it into the ground (level...) Thanks for checking in before you buy a new plane. I'm very flattered that you'd listen to my opinion for your purchasing decisions!!! Keep coming back for more!
