I’d vacuum seal, for longevity. Air is a killer of any shelf stable food. Edit: if the bags allow, I’d put the water straight in them and seal for 10-15 minutes. When rehydrating.

I got my freeze dryer two months ago. I have freeze dried: strawberries, pineapple, apples, kiwi, Mac n cheese, broccoli cheese soup, cream of mushroom, eggs, beef barley soup, asparagus, mushrooms, cabbage roll casseroles, bananas, freshly minced garlic, chicken livers, and shredded cheese. Next up: buttermilk and milk 😁 I’m addicted to freeze drying!

I love mine too! I did a few batches of 10 different kinds of vegetables and then ground it into a powder. I add the powder to soups and casseroles for extra veggies (hidden from kiddos lol) I'll have to try fruit next!

consider putting your freeze dry bags in a food grade bucket with lid, one damn mouse will ruin it all. roundness of bucket makes it harder for them to get in, unlike a square tub.(I use home depot buckets, always find lids in store, in paint section) Good job btw!

I make the goulash with diced green peppers and diced onion. Add tomato sauce , tomatoes , abit more than what you added. In your pot add salt pepper , couple cups of brown sugar , no ketchup. Its way way better ! Lol

I think putting the water into the bag and then seal it again, would work really good too and would keep the warmth inside. Would be the same as some MRE-bags.

We do a lot of ours without pre freezing. This is awesome content. I love seeing and getting ideas for freeze drying. We have had ours since September and have done lots of stuff.

Okay Josh. For serious storage, vacuum seal, AND O2 absorbers are a must! Oxygen is the death of freeze dried foods. Put the O2 absorbers in, Vacuum seal and then heat seal for maximum shelf life. Although with pasta I dont really recommend vaccum sealing as it can break the pasta. You are doing awesome! I'd also recommend getting a label maker! You can add the date, whats in the bag, and how much water you need to reconstitute!

U have ti do eggs when on sale ! I can get them cheep at your local farms I in North Barrie and our farm sell them for 13 bucks for a flat ! Scramble them dry them up bw shock ! Get your self a vacuum sealer for your beef it make big difference. If u like water melon 🍉 u love dryed it candy ! And do tomatoes from the garden u be shock ! Slice them inch and dry them ! Just add a touch water u have tomatoes from the garden in the winter it amazing

I've never had Red Goulash, my Mom always made White Goulash, but I kinda wanna try something like this! We use ground beef, onion, garlic, cream of mushroom soup, and canned corn. Mix with cooked Pasta (we usually use rotini) and then sprinkle with grated Parm, yum yum!

another great test for moisture is to weigh them after the initial run then add more dry time and weigh again if it changes more moisture was extracted keep drying until the weight doesn't change. I love that you are showing some of this!

Way to help with the rehydrating process (from what I’ve seen) is to let it soak for like 30 minutes or something in the proper amount of water and then you can heat it up (imagine it’s post apocalyptic times and you have a portable gas stove) using your stove and the soaking time reduces the amount of gas you need :)

You should heat seal the tops of the packages with a flat iron. Just the tops. You press the top together above the zip seal with a flat iron. You see how on each side of the top there is that tiny part that’s almost cut out? That’s where after they’re heat sealed you will tear off the top (heat sealed part) to open when they’re ready to eat.

I wonder if you just left the food in the mylar bag and added the hot water to it, re-seal it for like 5 minutes and stir it around..? Maybe the bag would act as a steam bag or something. Just a thought?

You have to seal the top of the mylar bag with heat! I use my daughter’s hair straightener, or you can use an iron.

We call the ghetto goulash, slop. I turn it into a casserole by putting it into a dish and spread shredded cheese on it and put it in the oven until golden brown. I broil on high for about 4-5 minutes. For deep dishes, add a layer of cheese in the middle as well as the top.

My grandma used to make goulash idk even what it is or how to replicate no matter how hard I have tried it but it was a beef meat sauce and pasta I know she used bay leafs and other seasonings and I miss it she passed a little over a year ago she was the best 😢 Also I didn’t realize how big your pot was until you had it next to the trays and I need one like that for my family 😂
