The internet lives forever! Used this vid this week to change out the band in my 46re on my 1500 Ram. No way I would have attempted it without your how to help. Thanks guys!
Nice job! Thank you so much. This was a life saver. I did this in my driveway. The band V clip was really difficult to bend. I practiced with the old one first. Don't use a piece of wood to protect the lining. It will allow the V clip to push through the metal band and bend it. I used a shop rag to protect the lining from the jaws of the clamp and it pushed the rag into the lining and some of lining ripped off with the rag. Oops, It'll be aight. I had to put a 2 foot cheater bar on my vise handle to bend the V clip. I also practiced getting the old band around the drum first. I didn't use anything to pull it around. Just push and wiggle. There was only two spots where it seem to hang up. THANKS FOR POSTING
no stupid pointless intros, no stupid music, good enough for the diyer to understand and best of all the band trick and settings! Excellent - thanks! have to do my 01 ram soon its not shifting into lower gears and now and then revs high with no power (yes fluid is at full idling in N) - so its time. Also our 67 travco trans was ruined by stupid tow company who dragged it 90 miles without dropping driveshaft! Burned out - so ill be a dodging trans bullets. Gr8 vid!
Great work Ed! Not only a good video, but outstanding work asking the right questions to allow your employee to share his amazing depth of knowledge with us viewers.
Duuuiide i have been looking for a video like this for 3 yrs U all answered all the ????? That i have been asking PEOPLE for 3yrs didnt no what i was talking about OMG THANKS SOOOOO MUCH Most definitely do more band adjustments of u can i will b watching
Just wanted to say thanks for the video, did this on my 03's 48re. I bought 2 bands, 1st was a test and the second went on great! Been almost a year and around 9k miles so far.
Glad I found this video , because it looks like I will be doing the same thing on my ram , just pulled the pan off today to get ready to change the governor pressure solenoid , I'm going to see if I can adjust before I replace it but at least I have an idea of what I have to do .
Great video. I crushed the strut mount tab on the band, but apparently not enough. The band barely cleared the first notch on the case, and now it's hung-up somewhere on the top part of the drum/case. I can't get it out. I can't get it in. Feeling like a greenhorn over here.
Well done repair that transmission dasn't matter it work only for a while , better than replace right now. your investment in this barn and lift pays off
Nice garage n video I have same truck thats an 06 48re 300k and i crawled under it and adjusted the front band for second and it was so out that when adjusted correctly the t40 torx screw is down inside the threads and not sticking out for the jam nut so my 2nd gear band is toast . but second gear still actually works it just hesitates for a few seconds at 2k then will shift . I may just pull trans rear main is starting to leak too :(
Best vid yet on how to get a few more miles before a full rebuild 🤣 Thanks tons for taking the time guys 🤙Can I confirm if this was a "slip in band" or a regular one?
I have a 99 Dodge Ram 1500 Van and the transmission is slipping pretty bad around 30 mph. This video has been extremely insightful. I have been doing a lot of research before doing ANYTHING with my transmission. I'm thinking replacing the band may fix the problem I'm having. If you guys have any input and have the time or means to reply (or anyone else who's been in my boat) please let me know. Many thanks!
I dropped my pan due to a P1740 and found the pawl in it. I new second gear was really crappy too before i got the code, but thanks to your video, I know what it is without much research. My question is this; What causes this issue to occur in the first place? Is it a symptom of the bands not having been adjusted on time or some other issue? Just want to know if I need to keep an eye out for something else. Thanks again.
I bought a new band and tried to bend the tab, ended up breaking the spot welds. I ordered a new "Slip in band". I'll update when I receive it and install it. P.S. Great video!
@@adammogan1165 It went well, they modified the wrong side of the band so I had to install from passenger side rather then the drivers side as instructed. A little tighter but eventually got it. I have a couple hundred miles on it so far good.
Is it possible to do the reverse band with this method? I lost reverse over winter I dropped pan there's no metal chunks fluid is pretty clean there was some sludge on the magnet and a lil very fine brass shavings in bottom of pan but looked real good everything else works overdrive and it shifts beautifully any help would be greatly appreciated
How similar is this trans to a 46re? My son and I are working on his 99 Dakota R/T. He lost reverse, appears to have 2nd gear still. I have adjusted the rear band, it was a little loose, I did find a broken spring in the valve body, another site said it is the 3-4 spring, will that kill reverse? He wants to sell it so I want to fix as inexpensively as possible. Great video with great information.
The 3-4 spring has an aftermarket spring thats thicker and addresses the spring breakage. And yes the trans are so similar you can modifiy the 46re trans into an HD trans.
No, you can adjust the rear band just by dropping the pan. Keep in mind the settings are different for different years as well as whether or not it's a 46, 47, or 48re, so be sure to look up the specs for your tranny as these band adjustments need to be precise for your particular model and year.
edzGarage working on the same thing, i can't remove the stuipid shift levers on top, i have removed both bolts do i need to spread the bottom lever alittle to get it to come up off the shaft? also, for the park rod do i need to be in a certain gear when reinstalling the VB? You guys rocked this video btw!
I like to put a flathead screwdriver between the levers to work the top one off and loosen up the lower one, you can do the same thing between the case and lower shift lever if you're careful, watch out for the seal under it though. They can be stubborn, keep working them around. As for the park rod, I usually put the rod in first and make sure park engages then put it into the VB and verify again. Be careful with the e-clip, it can be a pain.
i'm trying this right now and i'm having a hard time getting new band in.. i bent the tab down alot and i got the band in alittle more then a 3rd but it feels like its hung up any suggestions i can pull it out so not stuck? thanxx for the video wished i had a lift hard on my bones
great video. I've got an 2006 with a bad death wooble even after everything in the front end has been replaced and I do mean everything the only thing that hasn't been replaced is the axle assembly any idea what could be the problem?
Shawn West the problem is it's a dodge... I own a 2005 and will not make that mistake again. I love the truck but so many things with the truck done wrong. only thing right is Cummings engine
4th gen tie rod, and steering box stabilizer, maybe redo your wheel bearings and upper and lower balljoints and it should work i had the same problem to the point where it cracked my windshield but after i did that it ran nice and straight
Can you replace the rear band with the trans still in the truck? looks like that is what is wrong with my 97 Ram no reverse or engine break when you let off of the throttle.
theres nothing up there right just case the wire must be hanging up on something thanxx how mant quarts of oil did you put back in in thinking at least 10
@@gracefulgoon3190 Scrolling up in the comments, looks like it lasted 3yr and +1yr with guy he sold it to. Beyond that, no report. So, at least 4yr. Good enough for me!
My truck shifts nice now with new front band but now it surges intermittently and feels like someone put a brake on the transmission.. The truck will surge then slow down by itself. Ugh. I only drove it around the block twice. Any guesses. I reset the TTVA, no help. I also had to put in a new solenoid because the connector broke during the install.
I adjusted it twice, the lever did not move as easy as your video did at 12.11, but it does have a little play. 72 in lbs and 1 3/4 turn my manual says. You say 2 turns in video. It did get a flat spot on the band when I bent the tab in the vise. Should I back it off another 1/4 turn see if it gets better?
Mark Shanks Yea I'd try that. 1 3/4 turns specified in the manual assumes a good stock band but they gave the servo extra travel to account for when the band starts wearing. If you back off the adjustment another 1/4 to 1/2 turn you're just using more of the servos travel. I'd start there, just make sure it doesn't slip under load in 2nd gear.
I backed it out 1/2 turn. It does slip now and temp went to 270 degrees on a 5 minute trip. Before normal temp was about 170. I'll drop the pan and take a look see, and make sure all the connectors are fully seated.
Mark Shanks Yea something isnt right in there, I'm thinking that bend might be causing some trouble. Easy on the trans temp, I get scared over 220 in my truck.
evan miller It sure was, the truck drives night and day better, most of the fluid was reused as well. It's still holding strong with a programmer on the truck now.
Smashing job :-D well done :-D. That looked like a pain in the bum, your lift is a godsend Ed :-D. I get the impression that it wont last long, you sounded like you didnt expect the transmission to last, is it on its last legs Ed ?
The drum was not machine smooth so the new friction band has the the potential wear uneven, this uneven wear will shorten the life of the band. I think as long as he doesn't slip second gear by racing or pulling the repair should last for a good while. It is second gear, a gear you pass though pretty quickly in normal driving, so wear should be at a minimum. We will see :-)
I don't know about your adjustments I changed the band on mine and did the adjustments now it's not drivable. After some research I've found 3 different answers on what the number of turns you back of after torquing to 71 in lb. I know the 3 and 1 7/8 made my truck undrivable.
It's important to get the exact specs for your model as the band adjustment is critical, the adjustment specs vary wildly from one model and year to another.
great video. I've got an 2006 with a bad death wooble even after everything in the front end has been replaced and I do mean everything the only thing that hasn't been replaced is the axle assembly any idea what could be the problem?
