Love, love, love all the fabrics. You should use the very colorful fabric for yourself. You would be surprised how much you love wearing bright colors. The red is also beautiful, red being my favorite color. My small scraps go into a box that when full, I put in a black garbage bag and take it to my church's resale store. When they get a semi full (they take shoes, belts, clothes that are worn or torn and won't sell), it goes to 3rd world countries for them to make stuff out of. My large scraps are sewn together and when I get a large enough piece cut it to the size I want to make a mat for our local animal shelter for the animals. My outside layer is flannel (both sides), then batting, then cotton pieces sewn together for the inside so I don't have to sew over batting. I make large ones, medium ones, and 12" ones for the kitties. They are functional and wash up quite nicely.

Thank you Carol, there are some wonderful colours in that piece of fabric, it looked amazing on the washing line. Well done for making wonderful blankets with your larger scraps, how creative and generous with your time you are. Thanks so much for your comment 😊

Great makes! The baby dress and headband are adorable!!! I used to LOVE making dresses for my daughter when she was very little. There's just something so exciting and fun about making little girl dresses... 🥰 I find myself stopping #FridaySews videos to check to see if I have the pattern(s). Have them all on an Excel spreadsheet by brand in numerical order. I sorted and logged my patterns during the pandemic. As far as garment styles go (from a woman who is 64 yrs. old), anything goes as long as there isn't a plunging neckline and very short hemline. Your multi-colored bright fabric is my favorite also. You should make a dress for yourself! Would be beautiful on you and a nice Florida dress. Very beautiful fabrics, especially your blue and white. Can't wait to see what you make with that. You might use your cotton fabric scraps to make a scrappy quilt. Would be a project over many, many months or years, but a very nice piece to look back on to remind you of your cotton makes. Love your holiday photos! Did you do any geo-cashing in Spain?
@socarole66

Thank you Dori! I am loving making these little things for the baby girl, I did enjoy making dungarees for the boys though! Your pattern organisation sounds fantastic, I am a little more old school as you know. I am still trying to find a new set of drawers to put my patterns in as they are still in boxes on the floor. That bright fabric would make such a lovely Florida dress you are right and so different from my normal colours. I suppose I should keep some of those fabric scraps really but it just seems so much hard work making quilts 😆. We did not do any geocaching sadly when we were away, any time we thought of it we didn't have any phone signal to locate them. We have got a few there before though, maybe next time. Have a great weekend and thanks as always for your comment 😊🧵

I had a chuckle at the dress you’re wearing, Carole. I sewed many dresses in high school with a Simplicity pattern very much like that one. Back then, girls weren’t allowed to wear pants to school. 😮 I’ve been looking for another pattern like it for several months, so thank you! The NL 6650 is much appreciated, too. I want to grab that one. Love, love the baby clothes! The headband really ties the colors in the dress together. What a great first week back in your sewing room. 💕

Im so happy for you to have enjoyed your holiday. I love the architecture of big cathedrals. The glass in that one is all so brightly colored. Beautiful. I agree that the little dress is a little heavy on the bottom but when you put the headband with it it balances it out perfectly. As far as scraps, I just throw them away as I go along. I’ve never seen bags of scraps or rags in our thrift shops. Ill have to ask them about it.
@socarole66
@socarole66 Год назад
Hello and thank you. That large stain glass window was fascinating as from the outside, you couldn't see the colours at all, yet inside the Cathedral was bathed in the different coloured lights, just wonderful. Thanks for the opinion on the dress, without the headband it did just look strange! The charity shops literally just sell them to the rag dealers like they do the clothes that are donated and they can't use, they get money for all that. See if your local shop does that. Have a great weekend 😊🧵

My scraps go to the Goodwill who does take fabric scraps. I also stick hubby’s or mine worn out or stained clothing not worthy of donating in this. That athletic knit, you can make a dress of it, if you follow Lifitng Pins and Needles (Karina) she uses athletic knit because that’s what’s available in any knit pattern. Pretty inspiring. Spain looks divine. Welcome home.

That is great to hear you 'recycle' your scraps as well. It seems lots of people use them in some way or another. That knit dress! Beautiful! It shows off your figure so nicely and that little dress for the baby girl - I want a baby girl! What a pleasure to sew up little dresses and headbands like yours! You're my inspiration for sewing for the boys but I do hope we get a girl. Great catch on the popper thingy. If I had a good one I'd be more willing to do them, and honestly I think you get better and better at them all the time because you won't give up. Oh, Malaga looked fabulous. And that fabric! Can we just go shopping again? At a place like that? We'll drag Trish and Adam and Andra along. That viscose is just gorgeous and you need to make yourself something from the bright print. Have a great weekend and I have zero idea why anyone would swim in the English Channel when it's so cold! Same with the Pacific beaches in California. It was always nice to walk on them when I lived there but never to swim, the water was always freezing. Give me my Gulf shores any day. In the summer it's like bath water. xoxoxoxoxoxoxox

Hello Jen!! Thank you so much for being kind as always! It has been so much fun to make for this baby girl, I need to make something for the boys I think before my daughter gets a bit envious. That popper plier idea was just one of those things that popped (ha ha) into my head in bed one night, I can't believe I have finally discovered why NONE of my poppers ever went in straight. Must be my sheer strength and muscles that had put them out of alignment 😂. Oh I do long for another shopping trip with you all, yes, fly either here or I will meet you in Canada in Sept!! If I go in the sea I will most definitely be taking a photo to prove it I assure you, I only go in if it is nice and calm, I am terrified of waves oh and also, jellyfish! I made a huge drawstring bag to put inside the pouf so that I can occasionally launder the outer pouf if needed. My scraps were heavy but didn't completely fill up the pouf space so I store spare blankets/pillows in there as well. I just got rid of the scraps because I'll be moving soon and don't want to haul the weight. I used For__Days Take Back Bags to get the scraps recycled.

Hi Diana in lovely New Zealand! How happy you have made me saying that you still wear tiered dresses! I have finished mine and I absolutely love it (apart from having to do all that gathering 🤣). I am definitely a dress and sneakers girl I'm afraid, I don't have the need for heels anymore! I do think that they used to call similar dresses the Buffet Dress, am I right? Purely for the reason you could have a buffet of Mr Whippys and still be comfortable 🤣. I am really just practising with those baby dresses, my DIL is such a modern minimalist girl I am quite nervous of what she may want for the baby. My main aim was to make a dress to see the sizing and I am glad I did. I am going to take the dress to her next week and see her reaction though! Wow, Carole, so much sewing! The baby dress looks terrific, but I’m with you about the green, I think it overpowers the rest of the dress. Just my opinion. Maybe some matching pink would look better. I love that fabric, all of it. I love the idea of someone else picking fabric for me, what a surprise every month! That tiered dress will be beautiful, but I have not made it myself. I’ll wait to see how the finished product turns out. Didn’t you just love all of Viv’s makes? She has the most exquisite taste in patterns. She is responsible for most of my pattern collection also. I do love that boxy blouse. The pictures this week are stunning. Regarding the two hiking sticks that you have, we’re they hard to learn to use? I’ve often thought about getting them for just regular walking, as a defense against snakes and marauding dogs. It would also help with balance, as my doctor wants me to exercise more. As if I don’t get enough with all the canning I’ve been doing. 50 pint jars of snap beans, now on to tomatoes. Take care.
@socarole66
@socarole66 Год назад
Hi Sue, why do I always have sewing dilemmas 😂. The green does worry me yet some people have liked it. I think I will show my DIL and offer her the pink and she can make the decision, it was just a practice dress really anyway. I have just finished the tiered dress and whilst I do love it, I feel a tiny bit girlie in it! I will wait to see what my hubby says, it was an easy make though apart from miles of gathering 😂. Re our sticks, those are new ones to replace ones we have had for years. We both use them for going up and down tricky paths and just steadying our feet on stony slippery paths. I wouldn't be without mine as I have dodgy knees and they say they can take up to 40% of weight off the knees. They also enable you to walk further as you get less fatigued, now I am beginning to sound like a salesman 🤣 ! I am wondering if you are thinking about the Nordic walking sticks, now they are a different thing and yes, you have to learn how to walk with those really. If you do get some, there are lots of youtube videos about setting the poles for the right height for either going up or down. I cannot believe how much canning you do, that is incredible and your arms must be getting so much exercise!! Thanks for watching 😊🧵

My gosh! Your "popper" problem was caused due to an alignment issue? Good thing you figured that out! The little girl's dress with the matching headband is so cute! These days, all of my fabric scraps go to one of the instructors at The Sewing Studio who has a friend that collects that sort of thing to use in dog beds and toys. I figure all my left-over pieces are being put to good use. That dress with the gathering tie in front looks really comfortable. Good job! It's going to be interesting to see what The Sewing Box sends you to work on. Regarding tiers -- if you want it, go for it! At least, maybe one tier so that would be more like a ruffle. You're in a sewing bee challenge? How many items do you have to make for it? My friend in Scotland recently told me about a TV show you all get called "The Great British Sewing Bee". He suggested I try to find it over here but so far I don't see it on any TV channel. Wonder if I can watch it on-line somewhere? I'll have to check. I've been rather busy with other things going on in my life these days -- all good -- but I did go to a sewing class (where everyone works on whatever sewing project they want to) this week and got 2 summer housedresses cut out. I've used this pattern before but I like the dresses and I needed a few more. Both dresses are made using sheets I found at GoodWill. Very cheap! But the material is so soft and in great condition. Your vacation photos are very nice! You certainly do travel to some very interesting and lovely places. I wonder where you'll be off to next...

I know Deb, you would have thought something so simple would cause me months of heartache! I have made the tiered dress and I love it, I do feel sort of modern in it but you won't believe what Chris said, I will keep you waiting on that until next Friday 😆. I should really do a series on "What Chris says about my clothes!". I have looked many times to see if you can stream TGBSBee in the US but you can't I don't think, it is such a shame. I am so pleased that you have cut out some projects to sew and from thrifted sheets, that is fantastic. Hopefully you will be up for sharing those when you make them. You are right Deb, we do travel to some wonderful places but Florida is my favourite for obvious reasons 😘💗

I love your New Look dress! I think the McCalls dress is going to look amazing on you - never too old for anything my friend! The baby outfit is so cute. I love that headband. I absolutely love your new fabric and that bright one is stunning. Looks like your first box was a success which is amazing. I can’t wait to hear more about the sewing challenge you’ll be participating in. Fun!! I’ve made two of the Closet Core Poufs with my scraps. You’d be amazed at how many scraps you need to fill one of those. 😂 Gorgeous photos at the end. Thank you for sharing them. I hope you have a fabulous weekend! 😘💞

Thank you Izzy. I have just finished the McCalls dress and although I love it, I do feel a little 'girly' in it 😂. I loved making that dress and initially thought, I bet that headband is tricky to make (#sewingscared!!) then I realised it was literally one seam with raw edges! I think I can cope with that. The sewing challenge is going to be fun but I will be first sent a random pattern to make up, another case of #sewingscared. Wow I bet you need tons of scraps to fill a pouf, thats amazing Izzy. Hope you have a great weekend too and the weather turns out better than expected. '😘💗

Love all the makes, but I think the baby dress needs a light pink on the bottom. The material in the box would make a great skort...I don't know if that is what you call it in England. I don't know if you've tried 5 out of 4 patterns, but the Shenanigans Skort would be cute in that blue. Check them out.

Hi Diane, I did think about a pink bottom to that skirt but didn't have the right shade so went with the green. It was only a practice dress so I am going to take it to my DIL and see what she thinks. I never know with her and the modern generation! I have looked up that Skort and it is a garment I have never made. It certainly looks perfect for that fabric, shame it is a PDF as they do frustrate me! Thanks for pointing me in their direction. 😊🧵

When I saw the New Look 6650 pattern, I thought that looks very clingy and fitted and not suited to my curvy shape at all. But your versions inspired me to have a go… and I love it. My first one I’ve made in a patterned blue t shirt fabric which looks great and I’m just finishing a polka dot jersey version. I lowered the neckline a bit on both and only did back darts on the second one. Both fit well though. I have a third one planned which I hope to add pockets to - do you think that would work? Thanks for the inspiration Carole. You ought to be on commission with the Big 4 as I often get one of their patterns after I’ve seen your makes! 🤣🤣
@socarole66
@socarole66 Год назад
I'm so pleased to hear that you love the dress. I'm not a fan of figure hugging dresses either but I think the tie covers a multitude of sins! I'm glad you have had success and I think I also lowered the neckline a bit? I normally do on round neck patterns. Personally I wouldn't put side seam pockets in as I don't seem to have success with them without adding bulk to the item. If I was going to I would get the lightest fabric I could, reduce the pocket piece by an inch and then only put an inch of the main fabric on the top of the pocket. Do you know what I mean? That way you see the original fabric at the top of the pocket but it would blend into the lining type pocket without seeing that bit. No idea if that makes sense to you 🤣. I've done it a few times before on garments. Ooo I would love some commission from the Big 4 👏🏼, if only eh!! Thanks so much for your comment. Xx

@@socarole66 Thanks for your advice and I think you’re absolutely right - no pockets. I’ve just tried on the polka dot version and it’s not a great quality jersey so if I stretch it too much, it has that horrible ‘white’ look. Pockets would make that even worse. So definitely no pockets (and I need to use the better quality jersey from my stash next time too! 🤣). I do appreciate you taking the time to answer my question. Thanks again.

Glad you solved your popper dilemma. The baby dress is very sweet. I love the swim fabric that came in your box. It will make a fabulous pair of tights. We have a local group that stuffs dog beds with scraps.

Yes I did Christine, it had to be something and not EVERY single popper failing to line up properly! You are right about that box fabric, I can see some really nice leggings in that but I think my daughter may steal that😂. What a fabulous idea to use scraps for dog beds. Have a great weekend 😊🧵

Love your fabrics Carole especially the brightly coloured one. Got a question for you! Like you I am a big 4 fan but I like the Donny blouse that a lot of vloggers have been making. Have you discovered a big 4 pattern that is similar?

Hi Kay, thanks so much for your kind comments. That coloured fabric looked amazing on the washing line outside believe me! Re the Donny blouse, I didn't know what you meant about that pattern (I am out of the loop when it comes to Indie patterns) and I have had a quick look but can't see anything. The person to ask would be Jen as she knows patterns and pattern numbers off by heart! Sorry I can't help but it does indeed look like a really nice shape. Thanks for watching 😊🧵

@socarole66
@socarole66 Год назад
Oh dear I am so sorry about that. A majority of my viewers are American and so are my sewing friends PLUS as a family we absolutely LOVE the states and have visited on many occasions. We have indeed visited many other countries in the world, we particularly love Austria, France and Canada is just wonderful. I apologise if I go on about America too much but as I said, most of my viewers are from there and probably wouldn't appreciate me going on about England all the time! I do love England as you know from all my photos. Once again , I am sorry if I have offended you and hope you understand my reasons why.
