The FRN house project aimed to achieve a lot in a limited space. The client desired a wide variety of rooms, including a master suite, children's bedrooms, social areas, and service quarters, all feeling spacious and connected to the outdoors. Additionally, specific connections were required between these spaces, such as the master suite being on a different floor but still connected to the living room, and the children's rooms being near the playroom but isolated from noise.
The architect achieved this complex program through a seemingly simple design of two offset rectangles. One rectangle houses the private bedrooms and offers privacy, while the other open rectangle contains the social areas. This social area blurs the lines between indoors and outdoors with large windows and a cantilevered concrete slab roof. To maintain comfort despite extensive glazing, the design incorporates elements like overhangs and treated glass for solar control. Sustainability is also a focus, with the house featuring greywater reuse, solar hot water collectors, and solar panels.
