Hi there,
In this episode of VHTV I and Davy restore an old and abused 1995 model Weihrauch HW80 back to its former shooting glory in the hope of using it as a vermin shooting rifle later on.
Watch to see how this poor run down rifle was turned into a swan in Rags to Riches.
Please enjoy.
Si & Davy.

I'm a little shocked. I had an HW80 back in 1980 that I tuned by doing nothing more than polishing the piston, spring, and cylinder, and making sure everything fitted as well as possible. There were no piston liners or PTFE guide rods, or in fact any custom parts available back then, with perhaps the exception of a few after market springs whose vendor's claims were dubious at best. Anyway, using H&N 16 grain .22 pointed pellets I was getting an average muzzle velocity of 708.5 fps, with a standard deviation of only 3.16 fps. With 11.95 grain RWS Hobby pellets I got an average muzzle velocity of 837.8 fps and a standard deviation of 5.02 fps. And yes, the gun was *definitely* a .22. I'll let you work out the muzzle energy for yourself. 😉

Your hw 80 is only doing what I would expect from an 80 . Mine is one from the 1980s the one with the squared off front of the stock . In them days I found the best pellet was the blue tin Eley Wasp, I still use the gun but just for killing metal knock down targets in my garden . I now only use RWS super domes, the max range I shoot at is 29 yards and at that range target size about 3/8" . The only problem I have is the weight of the gun ( in second half of my 60s) in the days I used it on the farms I thought it was the perfect weight and could carry it for hours.

good restore, and great shooting again, goes to show what an accurate sub 11 ft lb rifle can do, and to all those who complain their guns are not shooting @ 11.5 , 11.10 ft lb etc,s you've shown again accuracy beats purely power.

No I'm just leaving it now mate. Its a hunting tool so I'm happy with it as it is. I took 3 rabbits with it tonight when out with my mate Phil on his permission. 1 standing unsupported at 38 meters. 1 standing unsupported at 22 meters. 1 sitting at 33 meters. All brain shots. Once its properly zeroed its deadly accurate.

You cannot beat the HW80- there is a very strong argument in favour of it being the best break barrel rifle ever made. Very high build quality, extremely solid- it will literally last a life time if well cared for- and then some. I own a number of rifles, the first of which is a HW77, which I acquired when I 16, back in 1987. It was subsequently Venom tune- Lazaglide, reblued, set back brass trigger, silencer- and all for FREE! That's another story.......! Steve Pope serviced the 77 in 2006, and it's seen light use since then and is shooting superbly. I own 2 x HW80's, one is a thumblehole stock Venom rifle. I bought it second hand about 13-14 years ago. My intention was to give it to Steve Pope for a full resto/service, however, life and a mortgage got in the way and I left the rifle stored away- and forgot about it completely! I found it only a few weeks ago, it's currently at ARC being serviced and will be reblacked by Paul Chell. Lyndon at ARC clarified that it was indeed a Venom rifle- I wasn't 100% certain, despite the stock and silencer- with a section brass at the muzzle end of the silencer, set back brass trigger, and brass trigger guard. The stock is immaculate. The second HW80 I bought second hand from BAR in 2006, it's a 2001 model, and it was immaculate. I gave that to Steve Pope- lazaglide conversion, set back trigger and silencer, with a little bit of engraving thrown in. I have a Custom Stock CS700 thumbhole fitted to the V-Mach 80, it is absolutely sublime to shoot and is as accurate as the 77. It's interesting to note that back in the 80's, Steve Pope was involved in competition shooting- he used a Venom tuned HW80, when the field was dominated by HW77 shooters. Steve acquired a significant collection of trophies using the 80 for field tgt competition shooting. A well sorted HW80 is superb and will provide many years of excellent service. Nice work on the resto, well worth saving an 80 from a careless owner!

Hi Davy & si. Lovely job done. HW80 was one of my first adult airguns excellent rifle very accurate wish I never got rid of it. They just go on and on. Used to use eely wasps in mine. Thanks for the reply . hope you can get your hands on the BSA lightening and do a review on it, its a cracking little air rifle. Keep it coming lads . looking forward to the tuning vid.

The pellet in an air rifle is always aimed slightly upwards in relation to the scope. It crosses the path of the scope and then drops to your zero crossing the zero point a second time. A target closer than your zero requires hold under no matter what the rifle or calibre however it may be close enough to be at the first crossing point at which point you need to aim dead on or if it's even closer (usually within ten yards you'll need to hold over.

Very nice job on the gun. The butt would come up well with satin finish clearcoat as used on cars but in an airosol can. If you have put oil on it i guess it would not take. I have an HW80 dated 1987 and in almost as new condition. Beautiful gun. Great shooting.

If using high mounts and the rifle is full power and you zeroed at 25 meters there is no hold under. The pellets trajectory never passes the scopes line of sight.

No your not quite correct Otto mate. It you use high mounts and zero at 25 meters in .177 if its a full power .177 the pellet only reaches the scopes line of sight but does not go above it. It then fall again.

Cracking video Si. Just a thought. Are you done with PCP's? In the last 12 months i've started air rifle shooting after a 25 year lay off. I started all those years ago (vermin control) with springers (PCP's didn't exist then) and was able to hit what I shot at. I have 2 PCP's now and i'm pretty good with them but I have a .177 pro sport which I'm not so good with. How about showing those of us who are new to springers or (as in my case) have forgotten, how to shoot them accurately?

Great video as always Si! I'm getting back into shooting air rifles here in Oz after about 25 year break. Any chance you and Davy could do a video or two on how to shoot air rifles properly? Especially springers... I've got a HW97K that I've had for a while now and I'm an average shot at best! I'm damn sure it's not the rifle. Anyway, I look forward to your next video. Cheers. Dan.

First I wanted to say that I love watching your vids. I live in the states and our air rifles don't have a limit on FPE where if I'm not mistaken yours have to be below 12 FPE my question is on this rifle what grain of pellet are you using and is it a .177 or .22. Thanks and keep up the great vids.

If the piston is greased, why polish it? As there should be no metel to metal contact, wouldnt a rough surface hold the grease better?
@stephengunrunnerhanson3550
@stephengunrunnerhanson3550 Год назад
That is the same way I zero my rifles, all ways aim at the bull and its the right pellet they should form a group if not try another pellet and still aim at the bull and the group is good move the group to the bull. I zero at 35 yards and out to 45yards , I will not shoot further as I am not to good but good to all them that can shoot further. And I had three 80s long barrel, and now I have a very early 80s in 22cal and a 80k both in 22, and very soon my birthday a new 80k in 177cal been looking but can not find a new 80s long barrel it's like they do not make them any more in the UK, but in Germany there is a dealer who imports into the UK to your house but a big chance with your money.
