From the Field -- Crashed E-flite P-39 Airacobra 1.2m Back from the Ashes!

If you've been following along on my social pages (@thercgeek), you've seen my newly refinished E-flite P-39 Airacobra 1.2m (bit.ly/377ccFN). I got this model a while ago, but in the course of capturing pictures for my review, I asked a friend of mine to fly the airplane and it ended up upside down in the weeds. :( So, I put it aside for a little while and then during the AMA show, with the help of some friends, used it as an opportunity to show foam refinishing techniques throughout the weekend. We got it fully in primer by the end of that weekend and just a couple weeks ago I finished up all of the weathering on it. So, here's a quick redemption video! ;) I'll have a full review as well as a weathering video coming soon. I gotta say, I love this little airplane! Flies great and the refinish really transformed it.

Absolutely fantastic!!! AWESOME flight and the model looks magnificent! VERY cool that you found the canopy after it's premature departure! I'm not much of a P-39 fan, but MAN that thing looks gorgeous...Great job my friend 😎👍!!

Chris, I love your channel and this plane! I also had the canopy come off my P-39 in flight but, in my case, I had an Insta360 OneX in the cockpit so I got video of the travel from the plane to the ground as if the "pilot" ejected! (Video: P-39 Cockpit EJECTS during flight BEFORE the first of two CRASHES today!) I love your custom work! It inspires me everyday! Best of luck and my regards! - Dave

Nice job Chris on the refinishing. My dad was building the Topflight P39 way back, 45 years ago. (Wow) He passed away and never had a chance to fly it, and it ended up stolen in a move. I always wanted to build a P39 and fly it for dad, and after watching those flights I’m going to build a P39

Don’t you hate it when the pilot tries to bailout a little premature 🤣....lol. Seriously-All canopies should come with a latching mechanism with all the improvements they have made in RC. Great flights..That really an underrated aircraft. Chris -your modeling skills are great.👊 Enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing. 😉

Thanks man! Yeah, I didn't expect that, but it's a pretty long hatch and there's a bit of sidewash happening in that knife edge, so I guess it's not surprising. The airplane will do a sweet knife edge, so that'll be happening in the review vid, haha! Magnets are due to arrive tomorrow. 😁

“Chappy wouldn’t have ejected... oh wait, he DID eject!” That quote made my day! Actually though, he never said he ejected. The dialogue went something like: Doug: I saw you go down! Chappie: I did, had to do a little dog paddling before an Egyptian fishing trawler picked me up. So technically he could’ve Sully Sullenburgered it in and just climbed out! There was a YF-16 prototype that had its gears jammed up and the pilot made a perfect landing with literally zero damage to the airframe.

This is the one I have been waiting for. She looks great with the new color scheme so do you think a 2200 4a is just too light of a battery I will face book you a picture of mine. Can't wait for the weathering video of this one. THANKS GEEK. 👍👍😎✌✌

Thanks man! I think a 2200 should work, but you may need to add some weight. The CG is pretty far forward on the model (I have it set at the rearward recommendation), so I think there's some room to play with it, but it does feel pretty good. I only went to the 3600 for CG, but I tell you what, it'll fly for days with that pack, haha!

@@Thercgeek We worked together at the same company a few years ago. He got me interested in rc flying. I was surprised to see him in your video. We live in the same town. I just bought a Top Flite P-39 Gold Edition kit so was looking for P-39 related anything. Odie gives me a hard time for buying kits and not ARFs but I like the torture of waiting for build completion before flying!

Wow, great repaint. Looks awesome !! Mine will be delivered tomorrow. What kind of paint did you use to keep it from pop corning? Thank's for sharing.

Thank you! Enjoy the airplane, it’s a great flyer! For the repaint, I applied a hole process filling in the panel lines, sealing with polycrylic and then applying multiple layers of primer sanding in between. The primer coats are what really smooth the gatoring if there is any. From there I painted it using Tamiya AS spray paints. I’ve documented the process in a series of videos and articles which are at thercgeek.com/kitbashing. I’m also working on a specific video showing what I did on this one which should post early next month.

I sprayed it with AS-6 Olive Drab and AS-7 Neutral Gray. I actually have a video posting next week on the weathering and refinish I did on it.

Paint on foam I prefer oil based enamels would like to know how you deal with paint eating foam?

EPO foam will handle oil based enamels mood problem. Of course test it first, but I have yet to find a type of paint medium that won’t work on EPO foam.

Mine fly's better after I tip stalled on takeoff then the repair!! Why is that??!!

It’s probably a bit stiffer from the repairs which really helps. Aeroeleasticity can cause airframes to do goofy things.

I ordered up some 1/4" refrigerator magnets. Rare earth magnets are the best ones, but I only just need a little extra hold on this one. amzn.to/2Sk18RB
