Tip for trans guys: If you’re passing and they’re patting down your chest, tell them it’s gynecomastia. And if they ask what that is just say “health condition due to hormones, i have extra tissue in my chest so I’m wearing a compression vest to make it look normal and keep it how it supposed to be”.

So according to my parents, I have been "misgendered" many times at restaurants. Those small accidents make me really happy, but my parents get extremely upset about this. They almost got a waiter fired once, so I called back the manager when they were somewhere else and explained to him the situation. And not gonna lie, it looks quite odd when a 13-year-old (looking 7, my haircut was too long and I have that classic Asian bowl cut look) looking like a mix of both genders and a mop requests to talk to your manager. weird experience, really.

The scanner at the airport flagged me because the people operating it clicked female and the machine read me as male. Gender affirming machine. 10/10

BIG TRANS TIP: Getting TSA Pre-Check prevents you from having to go through the big scanner and just go through a simple metal detector. It works great every time and you should have no trouble with the agents. It does cost more but is definitely worth the cost. I hope this helps someone!

Five minutes into random patdown and chill and the TSA agent gives you this look

I have an osteomy (bag attached to my side for poo to go into) and every time I go to the airport, I get scanned and patted. But the WORST was some old guy thought I was smuggling drugs in it, because my bag was full of poo. And he MADE ME TAKE IT OFF AND EMPTY IT. And just so you know, mine are a one use bag. And I only bring a few extras because of insurance. And my bag wasn’t with me in the back room. So I just stood there, covering my stomach, with poop leaking out onto my clothes... mortified. Sobbing. Let’s just say I got a free ticket after that for the severe incompetence of that airliner.

I never went to an airport. But when I went to church with my friends it was new. My pastor knew me before when I was known as a girl. But he realalized that I was trans. And asked if I want to be known as a he. I said yes. It was a very exepting church. I still go to this church. Me and my pastor have figured things out. To help me pass. He even got me my first binder. He is amazing. And I am very grateful for him to exept me.

I am a pre transition ftm and have never experienced really being called a male, only on three occasions, I got called sir twice and a him once. It is such a good feeling, I wish it would happen more often.

Background: I’m a trans guy. I wear a binder but I don’t pack. I was coming back from Guatemala one time and had to go through one of those big tube scanners during security check. The machine goes off, the attendant looks at her screen weird, makes me go through it again. At this point my anxiety is increasing dramatically and I’m thinking that I’m about to be outed in front of the people I’m traveling with (I‘m stealth) as well as all of the strangers around, which was absolutely mortifying. Just as I’m thinking this, I hear the attendant say to her partner, “it’s around his crotch!” And it was at that point that I went into full panic mode. The other TSA person came up to me and told me that he’d have to pat me down. He asked if I’d like to have it done in front of everyone or in a private room, so I opted for the private room in case I had to come out to him. So he leads me off to this little room. I’m scared, one of the people I’m traveling with is in there with us, the guy seems chill but I’m totally freaking out. The first thing he says to me is, “hey, you’re not wearing a money belt, are you?” And I realized then that I’d forgotten to take off my money belt. That’s all it was. He still had to pat me down, but he didn’t “find” anything else. That’s what I call a close one.

My grandpa has a favorite story to tell: He has metal replacement knees and carries his card which is supposed to get him a free wanding instead of going through the machine. TSA wouldn't have it. They made him step through multiple times despite him showing the card and saying he knew he was going to set off the alarm because he has metal in his knees. After about the third time and having nothing to remove, he steps through and they wand him. THEN they decide to do a pat down. My already embarrassed, overweight (think jolly Santa) grandpa assumes the position and let's the guy pat him down. Well APPARENTLY my grandpa's balls aren't just figuratively big, because this agent spent enough time fondling his junk for gramps to offer him a joking, "I haven't been able to get it up for years, good luck with that." Which made the guy quickly move on and let him go. TSA agent wasn't happy with being called out for his unnecessary groping. Honestly, these stories are the kind of stuff that make me not want to fly ever.

I had just gone from around 165lbs to 120lbs in 6 months. It was during a stressful semester in college and I hadn’t taken time to shop for new smaller clothes. Went through the airport and my pants were so loose, especially since I was required to take my belt off, that I was trying to keep one hand on them so they wouldn’t fall down in the scanner. They must have thought my actions looked odd and suspicious so I was ordered to have a pat down. I kept tryin to yank my pants back up in the process but at one point the TSA lady’s actions caused my pants to come down and I essentially mooned her. Easily one of the most awkward and uncomfortable experiences of my life.

I don’t have an airport story but I went on a cruise with my ENTIRE family a few months back and my mom is really struggling with me being trans (refuses to use male pronouns or preferred name). So she’s talking to our waiter at dinner one night and he asks who are her kids and she points out her four daughters. Now mind you I am a year and 4 months on T at this point and this was formal night so I’m wearing slacks, a vest, button down shirt, tie, the whole 9 yards. And there was also a language barrier so the waiter is SO confused when she’s pointing at me and saying “daughter”. Finally, my gf saves the day and just waves to the waiter and pretends she is the daughter. Happy ending, later that night we all got drunk at the casino and met some new people and my mom referred to herself as “Charles’ mom” for the first time ever. It may have been the tequila talking but I’ll take it.

In Texas a tsa agent mistook my binder for a bullet-proof vest

Last time I was in an airport, they took my wheelchair away because I "look OK" I also had a 9 hour layover there so I was stuck for 9 hours without a wheelchair but they claim, it wasn't their fault because I "didn't hit my head hard enough to get a concussion". needless to say, I ended up pretty pissed off...

This summer I was going home from Greece and the border security officer looked at me and then my passport as I was visibly anxious because I hadn’t had my name changed just yet (and already 7 good months on T so I didn’t looked anything like my passport) and after just a few secondes he smiled at me and said “have a good flight sir”. He made my day !

I had the same sort of experience with my packer at a music festival over here in The Netherlands. I was pre T and still had my female ID on me. And I was taken out of the normal queue and put in the "random selection" queue. I was then patted down by a really nice lady, because my ID said female. So I felt uncomfortable when she touched me, and when she reached my groin, she looked up and said: "You're trans aren't you? I'm so sorry, I should've sent a guy over. I'll get my colleague." So this guy patted me down ever so slightly and went "Dude, you look more buffed up than I ever did. Have a great day and enjoy the festival activities!" Weirdest moment ever and my ex-gf reminds me of the moment every so often😂

I was traveling home from California and this TSA worker stopped me and patted me down and when he got to my packer he GRABBED IT and he took me to a room and told me to take off my clothes and I panicked and I tried to explain I was trans but he wasn’t listening so I took off my shorts and pulled out my packer and he was so shook

Literally just came back from the airport. Had my binder patted down. The guy and I just made eye contact, he understood, and let me go.

Oof.. yeah, my parent went through this when she was still transitioning, at the time on her Passport it still said 'male' so every single time they'd take her apart to talk to her and pat her down.. Honestly i remember she found it so degrading at the time. Now that she has 'female' on her passport it's no longer a problem and she doesn't have to deal with this breach of personal space anymore but i can only imagine. Being taken out of line and patted down just because your gender is 'suspicious' to them, really embarrassing and uncomfortable.

The worst thing that ever has to me by tsa was they asked me to remove my hearing aids so I did and couldn’t understand what was being said to me so I asked if the lady knew sign language and she’s shook her head no and I then started crying and my dad was right behind me to it made me uncomfortable I need my hearing aids to hear. I also am pretty sure they can’t ask you to remove your hearing aids

I got pulled aside for wearing a pad when I was like 12 and the tsa agent patted me down because she assumed I was an adult when I, obviously, was not. Luckily my mom came to my rescue and told her off. Glad I wasn't travelling alone that time

I'm not trans, but I have an airport misgendering story. (I am an androgynous-looking cis female.) So, I walked into the bathroom at the Cleveland airport (I think it was Cleveland?), and this woman heading out said to me, "This is the women's restroom," and I was so stunned that all I could say was, "Yeah..." After like a second, she said, "Oh," then left. That kind of shit doesn't even affect the people who do it, yet it's so humiliating for people to question you like that. I can't even imagine your pain. :[

Yeah big mood, as a trans girl, everytime I go through TSA I have to explain why regardless of the male or female scan they do, their either going to find "something" on my chest or my crotch "out of the ordinary," and basically choose my poison: aka which part of me I'll allow them to pat down.

My ex's brother is trans, and we all went on a ski trip to Japan, and it was the first time he consistently presented as male for like a month, so both my parents were trying really, really hard to use the correct name and pronouns (his parents knew, but keep going back and forth). He's to young to go on t or blockers, but passes really well, and we had some very awkward moments where the guy checking our id referred to him as female and by his dead name for like five minutes, and we had to figure out if we should tell him or just play along and try to get it over with, as well as not being able to recognise the picture because it was taken pre transition, and having to clarify by loudly calling out his dead name. He also wasn't comfortable using male bathrooms, so he got a lot of weird looks, and most of the showers we had access to were communal, which didn't help.

I actually had a really affirming experience travelling from London to Sweden this summer. I forgot to take off my money belt so I got called over to be pat down. I was 6 months on T, binding and packing. And up to that point I hadn’t passed so well, so I was terrified I’d be called over to the woman. But I got patted down by a man who called me “buddy”, and it went fine and he didn’t question the binder or the packer, and then he said “thanks mate you can go now”. And I felt so awesome that I had passed even under that close scrutiny! :)

Exact reason I would ask for a male patdown and call them prosthetics they can't make you show a prosthetic(and yes I've looked it up, binders count in this they can't make you show or remove it), so unless they try to be illegal I get to be me and just say I have prosthetics.

I don't travel by air often, but without fail, every single time I've gone through TSA they've patted me down. I've never packed in an airport, but I think it was binding or just looking androgynous (last time I was under a year on T) that was causing issues. Hopefully it won't happen next time now that I've finally had top surgery! Edit- it was still kind of affirming in a weird way when they would send a male agent to pat me down though, especially before I was on T. Once it seemed like they were really confused about my gender and argued about it right in front of me (before eventually just asking who I'd prefer lol) It was embarrassing and sucked at the time but it's kinda funny now.

A trans MTF friend of mine and I were going through security at Boston Logan. She was literally asked to remove her silicon breast inserts in front of everyone and had her hands swabbed for drugs. She was humiliated and I was left furious. They didn’t ask me to remove my packer or anything, but I’m still really angry at the situation. I’m sorry this happened to you, it happens to the best of us..

Just recently my family and I were returning from a visit to the states, and we were heading through security. Now, since I'm mtf and haven't started E yet, I was wearing girly clothes but still have my deep, masculine voice. I'd just gotten through one of the whooshy detectors, when the lady on the other side asked if I'd prefer to be patted down by a woman or a man. It's probably been the best encounter I've had with that sort of thing so far, and it really made my day

I’ve had this happen to me. It is literally the scariest thing I have ever been through. Being freshly out as trans and then the machine picks up my packer 🤦🏻‍♂️ I had 2 female security ladies walk me off to the side and pat me down. Explaining to them that I had a prosthetic penis because I’m a trans man was the most horrifying experience I’ve ever been through. The flight back home, my packer was in my bag until we got through security. NEVER doing that again 😭

I was in Orly airport (Paris) once, and a security guy looked at me and asked about my luggage. He was like "excuse me lady... Sir... What are you exactly?" And I burst out laughing in the middle of a security control. I mean it was 3 a.m. I was travelling since 2 days and I was just so tired 😂. He felt so bad for me that he let me go

Holy shit, your story is not at all over exaggerated because I feel that way all the time when things like this happen to me(I'm an 18-year old baby trans boy without T so I feel like I have to conceal "way more" but I could imagine)! I literally gasped in shock and facepalmed my head out of exhaustion once you said he shouted "FEMALE!" and pointed to you oh hhhhhhhhh booooiiiiiiiii I would not survive that! I would weep out of pure embarrassment tbh like "nonononononoo my fear!" Tbh ANY time that I am announced as a female up front of anyone is a huge pain to my confidence honestly! I still haven't changed anything on my ID/legal info so just college makes me antsy!

When I was traveling to Seattle for treatment the tsa agent said I had to remove my feeding tube because of the liquids. I tried to explain that I was in the middle of being flushed with water through the tube and could disconnect my feed after it was finished in about two minutes. The tsa kept insisting I had to disconnect RIGHT THEN and decided to save me the trouble and do it for me. He grabbed my pump and yanked the tube out (while water was flushing into my nose and down to my stomach). He got soaked in water while I was being patted down. The female tsa who patted me down started making comments about my weight and body, saying I was skin and bones along with other unhelpful comments. I was severely anorexic at the time and weighed about 70lbs (I was 15 at the time). So then I started crying and I got so worked up that I threw up my tube in the middle of the airport. All of my formulas as well as the pump had to be specially scanned and when I got to the hospital in Seattle I was given another feeding tube. It was awful.

Ooh boy I got a little story. So in September I had my top surgery, and I had to fly outta state because insurances and stuff. Well flying there I’m in the tube, it goes off cause I’m passing as male but my chest reads like I’m strapping. So I get patted down, no biggie had to do that plenty of times throughout my transition. So I get to Florida, have my surgery, and am there 10 days. I get to the airport and my mom who was traveling with me had arranged a wheelchair for me. Originally the airport staff said that with a wheelchair I wouldn’t have to go through the tube, but I do. Whatever, I tell them I can’t lift my arms that high seeing as I had just had surgery. The scanner goes off again because of the ace bandage, and this time when they pat me down the guy flagged for more men and took me into a small room while my moms looking petrified. I’m told to take my shirt off in front of two TSA agents, and almost to take my bandage off until I explained what surgery I had. Kind of terrifying actually.

I think this is such a bad problem with TSA because they are so strict with "females only pat down females" and "males only pat down males" to protect their employees from accusations that gender fluidity and trans-ness never crosses their minds from a policy standpoint. Employee trainings, policy changes, and even allowing customers to choose who pats them down could prevent some of this.

I'm a cis female and I have huge respect for you, because if it was me I think I'd be too scared to travel at all. Already a nervous wreck in airports! I hope airport security are better trained and more sensitive nowadays.

Long story short, when I was 14 a couple mistook me for a six year old girl and insisted on helping me find my parents....Let's just say they were quite surprised when my brother came back from the bathroom and asked them why they were hounding his 14 year old brother...

I was patted down at the airport recently and it sucked. I tried to explain what a binder was but the lady wasn't listening to me and I essentially outed myself which was embarrassing because I had actually been passing for once. The TSA has a whole section for trans passengers on their website but I don't think they actually instruct their employees on how to deal with us.

I went through the metal detector in the airport and it goes off. I was about 9/10 and I freak out because the dude comes up to me and he thinks my dad is using me to smuggle things into where we were going. He spends ten minutes talking to me and patting me down then he looks me up and down, goes over to another dude and say “cripple” loud as hell. I’m disabled and have METAL arm crutches 😂

i went to the airport in mexico when i was really young and i didn’t know spanish then and the tsa agent made me put my teddy bear on the x ray machine thing and i thought she was taking it away forever and i sobbed!! good times

This exact thing happened to me. I haven't come out as trans to my family yet, but we were going through airport security and I went into the scanner thing and they pulled me aside. They said they were going to pat me down so I said ok. This guy starts partying me down and my mom goes, in the loudest voice possible, "Stop that, she's my daughter!" So the security people are all looking at each other very confused and eventually one of them has me go back through the scanner and I'm free to go. This may not sound like much, but I was 12. This terrified me.

So, today's my birthday. The only good thing about it was binge watching Ty's videos in the hospital early this morning. Everytime he makes me laugh, I feel like I'm dying. Totally worth it.

Being ftm myself i got an airport story. Not that bad but it sucked for me. So when me and my dad were flying from nm to las vegas we went to the scanner thing and of course having short hair and a giant hoodie made me just barely pass as male. BUT OH BOY MY DAD SURE HELPS TELL PEOPLE IM ACTUALLY FEMALE HAHA. Anyways back to the story, once I got out of the scanner the male tsa agent was patting down my dad and so he gestured for me to be pat down by the female tsa agent. Me being 13 with loads of (diagnosed) anxiety I was on the verge of tears. But once it was over I quickly grabbed our stuff and yeah. My dad didn't ask but he did give me a weird look. It also doesn't help that my family ignores the fact that I have BEEN DIAGNOSED with generalized anxiety. Rip, but the trip as fun, from there we went to san fransisco.

I had to go through airport security while wearing my binder and I got through the scan okay, but they did have me for a “random check.” So this dude pulls me aside and pats me down and pats my chest a few times and just. “Are you wearing something under your shirt?” And I’m about to cry so I just get out “Chest. Chest compression.” And this dude goes pale and just waves me through as fast as possible. I told my parents that it was the metal buttons on my jacket and they left me alone but!! It was embarrassing.

one time when i was like 14, a tsa agent was visibly frustrated with me for having cuffed my jeans................... and then she proceeded to pat down my ankles VERY aggressively which wasn't like uncomfortable per se but it was very... weird and strange lol.

One time a school nurse called me a girl on the front of my class.. I thought that I would have to tell them that I'm transgender. But my class thought that it's something going on with her and laught at her, thinking that she has mistaken me for someone else 🤣🤣

I was 4 months on T when a TSA agent asked me if I was “a pink or blue person”. I was so confused and really didn’t know how to respond.

Im from Sweden and Im also FTM. I havnt started T yet. In June I traveld with my dad and brother to USA. And on the way there ore home I had to go through that scanner and I was so scared because of everything Ive heard from others expierience. The TSA she asked me if I wanned to be scanned as male or female and I said male. I had a binder on so they obviosly had to pat me there so the guy who should do it looked at the girl confusing and she said, "I asked". But then he did it he was uncomfterable. But I thought it was good that they asked. It was a bit uncomfterable but still better experiance than most trans people.

Thank you for sharing your story, being a female (transgender), i always worry when going through any scanner or security, cause are they going to be kind and knowledgeable or rude and abuse their power like they did to you? Recently getting my name legally switched, it was cold in colorado, so i wore my cute knee high boots, that have some flat studs on both sides. It set of the metal detector, also, I was wearing a underwire push up bra, but, anyhow...the security screener at courts was super cool, didn't make me take anything off, and for boots had me zip them down, step out of one, then put back on and then the other, which is how it should be done. Even if you don't personally like transgender people, just show us respect, and think about if you had something that might cause something to make you feel out the "normal" then please think about when dealing with out people, please. On the plus, maybe just got lucky, but when visiting my brother in oakland for his fortieth, i don't completely pass, which is okay, but thankfully security going back from california was really cool, and think the screening agent just wanted to open my carry on because i had the limited edition David Bowie Dark Star album. If was funny cause i thought oh the goddesses what now, but instead first thing she did was go to my Ameboe's records bag and pulled it out gently. it was awesome cause she used all the correct pronouns, told me how she liked my hair, and then told me how she got to see Bowie with a friend and how she got totally turned onto him slightly later in life. So i guess try to keep positive and don't let anyone tell you whom your are or not, its there problem not yours, but, just don't be rude or pass on negativity back cause we just don't need anymore of that.

Not only does TSA question where my parents are and ask me my age... but after they find out I'm actually an adult, they will hit the "wrong" button on the body scanner and then make me get scanned again. It happens every time because I can pass as a boy, but my voice says girl and they get so confused. It makes for interesting airport trips.

I have a similar story, but the pat-down guy just grabbed my chest, (I was wearing a baggy shirt, and binding, but I'm like a c cup, so you can feel tiddy) and I could feel the existential dread on this poor German airport guard that just wants to get paid, (but I heard there's a male / female button on the scanner that the people have to press, which is Not Fun if your trans.)

Yeah, a friend of mine, her mother lost a breast to cancer and she has this large, silicon prosthetic one. When going through the scanner, it went off and the person showed her the screen and there was just this big triangle on screen where her prosthetic was. So the scanners can see a lot. Pretty sure there was a story about how there are concerns with how much these scanners see since it will show genitals... You can imagine how wrong that it considering children are scanned.

Nothing so personal or dramatic, but I once had a Baritone mouthpiece in my purse (I kept it on me b/c I had to share an instrument at school) and I got stopped by a guy who thought it was a crack pipe (???). Thankfully, an older TSA agent came over and knew what it was, so it turned into a funny story. I'm sorry TSA can be so abrasive, though.

I set the machine off in Seattle. I just said really loudly, "I'm transgender!" The guy at the machine said, "Which way?" I said, "MTF." I think the TSA there understand transgender folks. In Louisiana on the way home, I was waved through without a word. They were busy, and didn't have time to scan everyone I guess. Luck of the draw. I know it can be a pain to be identified in public as trans, but I think our best course of action is to just act like it's no big deal, and completely normal to be trans, because it is. I just act like it's the same as being blonde, or tall, or white, because it is. We just have to normalize it to the point that when people act weird, they are identified as the weird ones, not us. We are normal. When someone gets the "I figured it out!" look, I just steal their thunder, and say things to the effect of, "Look at Sherlock Holmes over here. You've solved the case Mr. Holmes! However did you do it! Your powers of deductive reasoning are astounding!" Generally they get laughed at, and everyone leaves with a smile.

Traveling back to university at LA X I got stopped because the machine where they check you for metal I guess can now scan your sex I could see the machine was telling them I was female so I had to get scanned 3 more times after that they were very confused why I kept coming out as female when I look like a full out dude it was embarrassing because everyone behind me was getting really frustrated with how long it was taking I’m ftm by the way

Well I don’t have a story like this but I have Tourette’s and you can already tell where this is going I yelled bomb...I was so uncomfortable, and I got so many looks.
