Fuel gauge not working in your 1st gen cummins? This is how I fixed mine. They don't make replacement fuel sending units for our old diesels, so this is what I did to repair the existing fuel sending unit and make it last for another 25 years!

I had the same problem. I found through trial and error the Carter P74699R works with some modification. Copy the original internal tubes and adapt the wiring harness. Swap the float arm and done. My truck has a 25g tank and at 1/4 it's about 3g left. From 1/4 to Empty it drops fast. Found it all at Genos Garage. Hope this helps others!

What type of truck yu have How did you make your factory connection fit the connection on the Carter square connection I have a 94 12 valve with the 5 ping factory circle connectors

@samuel4322able Mine is a pre 1991.5 year truck. Genos garage sells the square type sending unit connector for the 2nd gen sending unit which is the Carter unit. You simply find the wires for gauge, test and adapt to the square connector vs the flat style. Additionally you need to modify the tubing to copy the old pump for the pickup and return line. I also swapped the vent for the newer Carter pump. Essentially copy the factory unit.

Thank you so much for the video. It worked for my 93. Your fuel strainer looks different than mine but a Carter sts-200 works on mine. The strainer was clogged and my truck would shut off with a half tank.

Awesome fix, I was lucky enough that I just cleaned the contacts on my OEM sender and it is working perfectly now. If that ever fails I have a fix now!

I was told 11 years ago that sometimes that the fuel pickup tube will break loose from the filter screen. This seems to fit my trucks issue that when the gauge hits 1/8 tank, that the engine stops running because the pickup tube is no longer sitting in the fuel itself. Did you happen to notice how the red fuel screen comes off ? Might be the sending unit as well. Thanks for all of your work in this video !!

The screen at the bottom of the assembly had two clips holding it onto the assembly. Maybe your screen is a bit clogged or some debris is in the lower part of the line pickup at the bottom of the sending unit. I looked inside of my assembly at the bottom and it looked pretty clean, but I've seen a few photos of some trucks with dirty and clogged sending units. If your truck ever sat for a long period with a low tank or water in the tank the metal part of the assembly can rust and flake rust into the tank and assembly.

Will this work for my 1990 dodge d250 mine works here and there the gauge will stop working like it it were a loose connection and then out of no where it would start working again

Wouldnt you be able to rob one from a gasser sending unit from lmc say for example 55-6651 or would it just not work

It it's got the same ohm range 0-100ohms I don't see why it wouldn't work! I just went for the cheapest one I could find on Amazon lol

@@OvensGarage I might do the same mine is a tad wonky it reads sort of fine but sometimes when i restart the truck it reads true and usually shows an 1/8 over what it truly is if ive just started it or been running up and down the highway.

What was the year make and model engine size of the Dodge Dakota you mentioned?

I listed the fuel sending unit I purchased in the Amazon links in the description box. They are for a specific year and model of dodge dakota but any sending unit that measures 0-100ohms should work.

I just did some research and I believe the one you had was for a 1993 Dodge Dakota with the 5.2 V8.

Shot in the dark asking here, inside the pre screen at the bottom of the unit, a little piece with a rubber plunger/ check valve I think at the fuel pickup, do you know what side is pointed up into the pickup?

Oh boy I can't remember. Unless it's shown in the video I'm not sure
