This video is my initial impressions of the Fuji GFX 100s camera. I go over my history with medium format and how the camera opens up new opportunities for using medium format in weddings, events and portraits. Hey Joseph - fellow GFX100 fashion portrait and wedding photographer here - I tried the GFX100s but it was not for me - I like the dual battery system of the GFX100 which also gives more power and the much bigger grip just feels right and just the 'bigger better drama' of it all - and in my eyes it's older sister balances better especially with those weighty lenses, but what I really really didnt like about it was the electronic shutter thingy they changed from the GFX 100 as any movement in the shot is a bit off - but apart from that I'm sure it's great - good stuff GFX is still king of the mountain in any iteration.

Welcome back! Fuji is very impressive! And the choice makes a lot of sense! Olympus as a base and Fuji medium format when the best IQ is what matters. In my type of professional work, mft remains the equipment used in 80% of situations. In my personal use I use mft 100% of the time! Very good to see you back!

Thank you for a practical, no-nonsense look at the new 100s, Mr. Ellis. I'm eager to get mine in hand next week. You've given me a fine first-day orientation. BTW, I am also a PhaseOne shooter (XF/IQ160) and long-ago gave up doing anything like casual handheld work with it, for many of the reasons you've cited. Iffy AF, no stabilizer, limited ISO range (the IQ160 is a CCD), unpredictable white balance, heavy as a cinder block. It's wonderful for certain lock-down work but ugh otherwise.

Welcome back Joseph! I've been following you for over a year now and it's crazy how much your children have grown. It's nice to see that you're expanding your horizon in terms of photography gear. I just added the Nikon Z5 to Olympus em1 mark III and m43 gear. It's nice to have options and experiment with different brands/formats. Keep up the great work and looking forward to new content!

Wonderful!! You are back!! And with the Fuji! I'm thinking about adding a 100S and 2 lenses to my Olympus gear and just skipping APSC and FF altogether. Best of both worlds, m43 for birds/wildlife and the 100S for portraits and landscape. I'll use both. Loved your review, but, more than that, great to see you are back on YT and are making a living, and that the kids are growing. Hang in there.

Joseph, nice to see you back ... I think you have very good combination , MFT and for special work medium format, ... For me it is also MFT about 70% and FF 30% , perhaps I should evaluate the MF .. ??? Good luck with Fuji ...

Welcome back although had not found you previously. Just put my hands on the 100s yesterday. Having both the 50r and the 100 I am primarily looking for less bulk and the camera definitely hits the mark. The performance I expected will be the same as the 100 with easier handling. I shoot mostly landscape and I expect to use 100s, 23mm, 45-100mm, 100-200mm and telecoverter as my basic kit. Throw in XT4 with 100-400 or 70-300 and should be able to photograph the world. Looking forward to compare notes.

I think Fujifilm manufactures more cameras every year and distributes the whe continents; mking the people to purchase it easily and keep it in their possession. Every time, only Fujifilm only Fujifilm only Fujifilm. I will also have to seek this model one day, because my curiosity for this camera increased suddenly. I will have to see why this camera is so special!!!

Great Video, thanks. I too have m4/3 Olympus but have been using a GFX 50s for work that demanded the format and size. Good to hear about the handling of the 100s. On my 50s I have the grip and tilt adapter and your explanations were helpful in seeing how the 100s compares. Interested to see what your next 30 days will produce. :)

Thanks Joseph for this honest review!I have been testing the GFX 100 S with the 80/1.7 lens and AF-C does not work as it should.With the 100/2 just fine , but slow.

Nice review. I started this GFX100S with 32-64mm f4 lens. To add a portrait lens, what would you suggest between 80mm f1.7 and 110mm f2 ? I did have a 85mm f1.4 and 65mm f2 for my FF 35mm Lumix S1. Though 65mm is more versatile due to wider field of view, 85mm is more pronouncing and gives more likable portrait photo to me. Would like to have your thought. Do you consider adding the 80mm to your kit ?

Watched all your gfx videos. And the content is literally great and beneficial. But, one thing you should improve is the visualization. The more sample the viewer see, the more seen the channel gets!

Thanks for sharing! Interesting comparison with the gfx 110 & x series 56mm F1.2, sorry but I really had to rewind a few times and really look hard to see much difference, Maybe it’s just my eyes but I can’t see my customers seeing the difference! Very minor.

How in the world do you shoot weddings with 100 megapixels? Your computer would explode? Also, what about high speed synch? For instance, would you use this camera with Profoto gear? By the way, I love this video, especially how you paused and looked at your notes. There's an honesty to your approach that I appreciate.

Yes you can definitely use Profoto gear, HSS with the GFX. On using 102 MP files, TBH is hasn't been a problem so far but I'm still not shooting the entire day on it. 102 MP dancing photos seems a little over the top for every wedding.

Dear Joseph, MFT cameras are always criticized among others due to their small pixel area thus causing much more noise. Bit in fact the pixel size of the GFX 100 S is quite the same of the OM-D E:M10 M 1-3! What do You say to the low light performance of the new Fuji?

The high ISO of the Fuji is much cleaner than my EM1x, easily seen in LR and that’s before you might downsize the GFX for whatever use you have. I think that’s good news for OMD though because it means improvements are possible and probably in the pipeline.

About the continuos AF, could it help to set the points of focus in ZONE, lock someones face and keep shootimg? Would it work better than continuos AF with EyeAF tracking? There're also some options to finetune the tracking, like for fasting moving subjetcs, or subjects coming in and out of the frame and so on. it would be nice to know more about the best settings with this camera.

This may be a silly question, but do you think this system will ever be useful for sports/action/wildlife? I understand there is no super telephoto lens in the gfx lineup and the amount of data could be overwhelming even if the camera could shoot at >10fps...

Maybe once the sensor architecture without any need for a physical shutter is perfected then all cameras will be of sports/action speed.

No idea really why it’s still 4K more. It does have the removable finder with the 5MP resolution, vertical grip, dual batteries but it doesn’t seem to justify the premium.
