How to completley remove the dashboard from a Peugeot 406
This is quite a big job, as you might be able to notice there are some continuity issues in the video with removed parts reappearing, and the interior trim changes, the reason is i have put some old videos into this one on top of the extra footage of the dash removal process.
The main reason for removing the dash would be if you had a crash and the passenger airbag burst through the dash.
You could possibly trim the dash in a nicer material such as leather like the new 208 has, but exactly how you would go about doing such a thing i have no idea.

@ Carlos Barragan There are a number of reasons, there are a few air con components behind the dash that need it out in order to gain access to them, the dash may have been scratched or damaged by a previous owner, if doing an engine swap with modern engines the loom needs to ideally be used with the engine. Its also necessary for a restoration, the 406 isn't at the age for a restoration but my 305 is and i have currently stripped it back to the bare metal with the dashboard coming out in the process. Under normal conditions it shouldn't have to come out, but there are conditions where it may need to be removed, personally i would rather remove an engine than a dashboard.

Hi there, I was wondering if I can retro-fit the later plexed LED instrument panel (2002-2004) onto a (2000-2001) semi-plexed car, I like the idea of reducing current loads on the BSI board and changing the colour of the instruments or is it easier to change the complete wiring loom from a later car. I also want to change the center mfd and climate control unit.

Hello, I have an issue. Do You know which part could be responsible for ABS not working after hitting the steering wheel? It used to spontaneously turn off and then on again, but sensors on wheels and pump is alright, so this is not related to those, just to some stuff around sterring wheel :( I would be grateful if You had any idea what going on. Oh I don't have ESP and a hanbrake light is on as well.

Hi, thanks for the video, it was really useful. I hope you'll read this comment, because I'd have a question I can't find anywhere an answer for. At 3:31 there's a fuse socket with a 20A fuse in it on a separate wire. I have the same but without the fuse, what is that fuse for?

I think the dash is added with the help of a large jig that moves it over to the car, but it must still be a fiddly job putting them in.

thanks for that update, why should there be any difference in car sterio wiring and size differences between the centre of dashboards console from 406 and 407 when they both look same size as both models being of same family size saloon car.
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 8 лет назад
+Ravinder Singh Bansal Ah they are completely different, physically speaking the 407 dashboard is much different to the 406, these are integrated stereo/infotainment systems, it would have been different in the days of the 305 and 405 when the radios were just simple single din affairs, the 407s radio is made specifically to fit the curvature and shape of the 407 dash, and the same for the 406. The wiring is the other issue as the 407 especially if it has sat nav and a trip computer communicates with the BSI and ECU for key information, a 406 BSI would not communicate with it even if a few of the plugs at the back matched up.

would there be a slimmer version of temperature control unit that I could use to make space to fit in a 2din system by moving the centre display unit either up or down. if central console cannot be upgraded to a 407.
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 8 лет назад
+Ravinder Singh Bansal Not really, the manual heater controls took up the same space as the climate control unit, The MFD or original LCD in the 406 could be removed you will loose the external temperature sensor, trip computer, and door open warnings in the process though, there are no aftermarket systems that can interpret the data thats supposed to go to the MFD. Type peugeot 406 double din, to get some ideas of the things that have been done, it takes a bit of DIY work to achieve them in most cases.

Great channel. Can you describe how to disable the headlight washer spraying system e.g when I use the washer stalk it sprays the windscreen like it should but it also makes a hell of a mess on the hood with the headlight washer system.. I have to get out of the car and wipe down the bonnet because its covered with bubbles and messy washer fluid..
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV Месяц назад
Hi there An unusual problem indeed, i suppose it rains here so much i never cared that the washer fluid got on the bonnet. I was still enjoying seeing the jets pop out of the bumper like a smaller version of pop up headlights As for a solution you could remove the wheel arch liners and either disconnect the motor for the pump that serves those washers, i cant remember at this stage if the 406 used a separate pump for the headlight washers or sent the pressure through the same line as the windscreen jets, if its the latter then the piping will need to be disconnected and appropriately blanked off. There could also be an option in peugeot planet to disable them, again im not sure as its been a while since ive worked on the 406.
@RurikTW

@@peugeotCitroen2CV thats some good advice thanks. so apparently on type 3 engine bay fuse box the number 7 fuse for the headlight washer should be a 20A but mine has a blue 15A. Im just going to pull it out and hopefully it stops messing up the hood.

@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 8 лет назад
+Ravinder Singh Bansal I dont think so, apart from the different dash structures the wiring is completley different on the two cars, the radios are controlled and coded through the BSI so its not a case of swapping them either. You could fit an aftermarket unit to the 406 but its a single din slot, some people have removed the MFD display, and moved the climate controls up or down (with some trimming) then made custom adapters to suit the double din radio. If i was doing that id make use of 3D printing to make a decent looking cover plate as some of the pictures ive seen look very ropey. What i have in my car at the moment is the standard system with a connects 2 bluetooth unit, it streams the music, phone calls, sat nav directions all through the speakers. Yet retains the steering wheel controls and originality of the dash. Sat nav works through the iphone which clicks into a 3D printed holder which has replaced the middle air vent, very easy to revert back to original if needed and it works well.

Wow I would've expected that to be much more similar to a Xantia actually, since it's loosely based on the Xantia in some ways. I find the Xantia's dash much easier to disassemble, but then unfortunately, in the Xantia, you have to when the heater matrix goes wrong... Do you know if a D8 is much different from these D9s?
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 7 лет назад
Funny i have just bought a Xantia recently (a 1997 V6) the Xantia dash looks like it would be easy to disassemble yet still seems sturdy. I have heard they can be a pain when the matrix goes, but its one job in the lifetime of the car, but just handier on the 406. The D8 and D9, a lot of parts are the same. The electrical system changed the most, engines especially diesel went from XUD indirect injection to HDi common rail engines. The interior trim changed a bit, climate control was standard on all models bar the base L models, there are a few other minor trim and exterior panels which were revised.
@macmanipowermacbookprair4110
@macmanipowermacbookprair4110 7 лет назад
1997 v6? Brilliant! The nicest one there is if you ask me. Too bad there's never been a RHD v6 Activa. The matrix is a pain because it's a lot of work. I've disassembled a Xantia dash twice now and after you've done it once, it's all not too difficult. Again, a lot easier than the 406 seems to be. The glovebox can be a bit of a pain though, because it differs a bit between model years and optional extras. A '93 model without airbag or climate control is a lot easier than a '97 with airbag and climate control (like yours and soon-ish mine. Trying to retrofit climate control in my Activa TCT ;)). Wouldn't know about the facelifted Xantia though, I have never even driven one ;). But apart form the glove box, disassembling a Xantia dash is very doable.
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 7 лет назад
Last of the Series 1 shape with the V6, nice black leather interior with only 50,000 miles. Rusty rear arches and wings let it down. There was never an official RHD activa v6 although ive seen one that someone has converted. How do you find your Activa TCT? Do they still have the citroen float? At the moment my C5 V6 is closer to being road legal then the Xantia, the C5 does have a lovely waft factor about it.
@macmanipowermacbookprair4110
@macmanipowermacbookprair4110 7 лет назад
With decent spheres? Absolutely! Sure, it might not be as soft as a normal one, but still very comfortable yet with stunning handling. I've never personally driven another Xantia honestly, but I have driven an XM a few times. The XM was a bit softer than my Activa, but really not much. That XM didn't have new spheres though, which my Activa has. I have driven the c5 a couple of times too, but not very recently. I think that might have been a tad firmer than the Activa, actually.

Hi, the manual heater control dials in the 406 I think that panel is removed in much the same way as the climate control unit is, i am not too sure if there are cables in behind the panel that the dials move around or electrical wires but it should be easy enough to remove them once the panel is out of place.

+Jey Ey It depends on the year, they changed the wiring systems a few times. The D8 (1996-1999) Remained unchanged, the D9 (2000-2004) had two big changes the early ones (2000-2001) had the old style indicator stalks and were referred to as semi multiplexed, the later ones (2002-2004) had the com2000 indicator stalks and were fully multiplexed. I am not sure if the BSI then controls a separate relay, or the lights are powered straight off the BSI. There is a few relays in the engine bay fuse box. 406oc is the best place with this sort of question, especially if you want to change to LED's. One word of warning i can give regarding LED bulbs avoid cheap ones they tend to just stop working in a shorter time span than a normal bulb would last. I had eBay LED number plate bulbs, they were bright but did not last a great deal of time
@dasnrk
@dasnrk 8 лет назад
+peugeotCitroen2CV Hi! I went with putco's plasma leds almost all over. Front and rear parking lights, front and rear turn lights, back white parking lights, rear fog light, side blinker lights, 4 yellow direction lights and all of the 3rd brake lights. I changed Interior and number plate lights with some other bulbs that I could find locally and they all together look great. The only ones I haven't replaced yet are the rear brake lights because (I guess it is because of the resistances) they glow normal but after braking a couple times they just glow like if I was braking the whole time and that is dangerous because I can get rear ended so I switched to the normal stock bulbs. I payed a lot of toll taxes because I ordered those putco's bulbs in the USA but anyways. I got a H1 Led kit for the front fog lights but I haven't installed yet because I had to purchase the light holder spare part itself because it is full of moist and rusted. I have to figure out how to access the front fog lights in order to change it. I will upload a video soon showing off. Thanks for the 406oc hint, I will check with them.

+Gringo AP When is this noise present? Is it when the ignition os on, or when the car is driving? Does it definatley sound like a motor? Have you looked at the recirculation flap motor which if the teeth are broken may continuosly spin around. I dont know if the components are laid out differently on your left hand drive car, but on the right hand drive cars most of the ventilation components are best accessed by removing the glovebox. If you remove that and if the noise happens when the ignition is on then try to listen for it and get closer to the component in question. Generally the 406's dashboard is well made it doesnt suffer the irritating squeaks or rattles that the 405 may have had.

I havent made a video on this issue, the sump is held in place with a number of bolts, it should be relativley easy to remove, there may be some pipes to get out of the way, replace the gasket when refitting the sump or use instant gasket. They dont normally give trouble because they are some sort of alloy, no rust issues but i suppose hitting a kerb will burst them.

Alternativley ask on the 406 owners club forum, or on the facebook page. Its not something ive had to deal with myself so cant comment but those would be the routes i would take to looking into this problem. However what is wrong with the heater blower is it just not working, i remember something in the past about wiggling the wires around the ignition switch could get the fan going.

I cant really say it would be the same, generally its the same job ie dashboard removal but there will be quite a few differences to doing this on the 208, although taken in a similar approach just find out where the clips/fasteners etc are located and how to remove them. Once you do a few car dashboards you can generally figure out how they come apart.

If you make sure to be organised with any removed parts keeping them in boxes, labelling them, taking plenty of pictures before the removal of the part or connector then it certainly helps when putting it back together, I currently have the dash out of a 305 van its getting the chassis fully sandblasted and parts of the windscreen surround and bulkhead welded so taking the dash out was the only option.
