Cut down on the "unrealistic fairytale superhero autosuccess" stuff though, because coming up with super wild stuff is easy and it will get boring really fast. Only by keeping the "uneasy stomach feeling" alive can you keep the game exciting for a longer time ... and to do that there has to be the risk of dire consequences for the player characters. Superhero/movie stunts which auto-succeed kinda negate that risk.

Account28001 My roleplaying experience (since 1984) has taught me that each roleplayer CAN go through four phases in his career. Each of them has its own fun, but the potential is nicest at phase 3. Phase 1: Powergamer - This is basically how the "Acquisitions Inc" games are played, especially the 2013 one. The DM disregards any "common sense" and many game rules for the point of making the players feel super powerful. Loot is absolutely plenty and risk of death is minimal. Phase 2: Ruleslawyering - People are trying to "play the game properly" and sticking to the rules by the letter. Players are a pain in the ass of the DM, when they are trying to argue with him using the letter of the "law" (rules). Players are prone to creating super powerful characters by abusing multi-class options to handpick certain skills that synergize into "super"powerful abilities. Phase 3: actual Roleplaying - Characters and stats become less important and you are more concerned with the personality and probably the looks of the character. At the same time the rules can be overruled more easily by the DM for the sake of a story (creating magical effects that are listed nowhere). In Phase 1 that might be happening too, BUT the players are usually equally stuffed with powers and thus the "level of awesome" isnt that great. This is the phase where player characters are least powerful and this is a good thing, because it increases the risk AND the reward from succeeding. This is also the phase, where "the world" feels most alive, because it is realistic instead of cartoony and characters and monsters have personalities compared to just having stats. Phase 4: Politician - This is actually a bad step in the development after roleplaying (but luckily also rare), because SOME players are trying to manipulate other players (the actual player) for their own benefit. Its not pleasant to play "against" such a player.

Muck006 I really do agree with you on this - for DMing a home game at least. What they're doing here and in the podcast is to provide entertainment for the audience. I think the way Chris is trying to do that is by letting the guys have some nonsense fun with the story because it's fun for the audience; it's cartoonish. (Now, spoilers ahead for those who haven't seen the entire series.) I especially agree with the "uneasy stomach feeling" though, and I wish it was used more in these games. I think it was done well when it appeared the party was going to suffer a TPK in the Temple of Orcus, and again when Aeofel died. There was a sense of gravity among the players, which also influenced the listeners. Now, though, it suffers. It's difficult to get that same feeling because Chris will always deliver a Deus Ex Machina to allow the entire party to continue. It's like watching a cartoon where you know the good guys will always win. What I think Chris needs to do is provide a situation where the party loses, but doesn't necessarily die. They need to lose something that's close to the party without the party suffering a crippling loss that would need to be remedied by DM intervention.

@@brotherdaniel1524 in the end, it was a personal matter between the two of them and if they wish it that way it really isn't our business. In the end, the only problem I ever had with Wil Wheaton being on these shows is that whoever is in charge of sound apparently wasn't good enough at their job to be able to balance out his microphone properly. He was fine and continue to be fine while engaging in role-playing games. Perpetually angry people on the internet just feel like they need to be able to complain about someone in order to make their Day More bearable.

@codyrocker185 Kurtz gave an interview like 2 years ago. The most he ever said was that Wheaton kinda disagreed with him 'antagonizing' the audience, like bringing them into the banter, which apparently was a repeating thing which rolled into other arguments and it just became clear that they disagreed on too much to work with. I don't think it was bad blood tho. Aggravating work sure, but not with any maliciousness.

+Isaac Self He was brooding, bitchy and extremely desperate seeming for attention. I think being the only professional actor at the table made him feel like he HAD to be over-dramatic, and that also cut into his enjoyment of the game (and maybe even contributed to his decision to permanently quit the group). If only he realized he could be normal, chill out and enjoy the game (and stop screaming about the acid pits and reminding everyone you died, we get it -- you died) I think we'd maybe still be seeing him in these games. Alas, he's basically officially confirmed he's done with Acquisitions Incorporated and is "probably not" coming back.

WTHeskett He was getting terrible luck compared to everyone else. He's done shit like this when losing in his own series, TableTop as well -- throwing the dice out into the audience, or game piece off camera, etc. etc. I'll go find the specific TableTop game if I have to do so, just let me know. He was a good sport about the bad luck up until about 3/4 of the way through. Then he started being, well... brooding and bitchy. As far as desperate for attention, well, he's always insisted he be at the center of it.

Jared Hendricks idk I really liked his presence there. Most of his "need for attention" was pandering to the audience to make it entertaining. He was really a great asset in terms of D&D knowledge as well. I would have been upset that he left except they replaced him with Patrick Rothfuss. I mean come on, it's Pat Rothfuss.

Rifleman Moore Scott Kurtz has a pattern of mispronoucing everything, throwing in slurs directed at races and sexual orientation, cannot remember the rules on temporary hit points, charging or other aspects from season to season, and is bewildered by basic addition. He also bitches when the audience talks. If other players want to talk strategy, he makes loud snoring noises. If other players are rewarded for ingenuity, he complains. If he doesn't get his way, he whines (check out Season 8/Arc of the Mad Mage and the incident with his precious "beer robot"). Don't look for improvement. He's a 400 lb eight year old in an adult body. My 12 year old daughter has more focus than that moron, and she has ADD.

No, actually--being heavy had absolutely nothing to do with the topic, but you're the one who brought it up. And, since everyone at the table, and the DM, all realize that his antics are an affectation for humorous effect (which you appear to have missed), the fact that you did bring that up says a lot more about you than it does about him. You do realize the guy is a professional humorist, right? You do realize that the DM and the other players actually enjoy this, and enjoy his presence at the table? And have stated as much elsewhere, on multiple other fora? You seem to be the only one disturbed by this. If the other members of the party and the DM are all in on the joke and having fun, what place do you feel you have telling them all that they are wrong and that they should not be?

There is a difference between being funny and trying to be funny. If you listen as I have to every podcast that includes Scott, you'll see a trend. Chris Straub does the same sort of job and he's funny without making a single racial comment. No one else seems permitted to do so...but Scott...it's "an affectation" (you claim). I've watched/listened all the AI videos countless times. The others at the table also pick up on this with subtle comments or looks. You'll also note that they redirect conversations, change topics, and the like. And if I'm the "only one disturbed" by this, why does the audience always seem to grow to dislike Binwin over the course of a performance? Note Scott's statement "They're already pre-against me, so I might as well go with it?" Someone needs to pay more attention. And also note that it makes little sense to be a childish, whiny bitch as an "affectation" as a "professional humorist", which he does within the confines of a audio performance only or on stage. Your argument holds no water, there Fluids. Pun intended.

Actually giving respect to the original work was the main reason I made this video. Remember all the Chris Straub animations that played when certain events happened during the episode? The live audience got to see them.. but when Wizards put their own version online, ALL of these were CUT. Not only that, but the original opening animation was redone, with clown noises replacing all the swearing to the point where you literally could not understand what anyone was saying. I made a point of putting ALL the animations back in, in their original gloriously profane form. In fact, I even sat down and spliced both the Twitch stream version and Wizard's RU-vid version together chunk by chunk to eliminate all the black-screen pauses that happened on the original showing when the crew was switching the camera to show the animations. That's why I call this version "The Ultimate Version", it takes the very best of both showings of this event. I even added someone's cell phone camera of the Giant Idol getting lowered, so the RU-vid viewer would understand why the crew was going NUTS at that point, something both versions missed. And a picture of the AD&D manual cover so new people would get the reference. Ok, so I added the Stan Lee cameos. I already apologized to Wil Wheaton about that in another comment. I was going mildly insane doing all this though, I felt compelled to do something creatively irresponsible.

I just found out about this. Seen 2015 pax D&D. And i loved it. Now I wanted to see more to know a little history about them. But Will is making it really hard to watch all of them. He just have to say something every time when anything is happening. And I don't think he is funny.

I actually like him quite a bit. I was sad to see him go. I just couldn't resist ribbing him a bit here.
