Hi Matty. Thanks for the feedback mate. I've got another one uploading tonight. It's my longest one yet and the last in the series. It's the full 3D model and 2D drawing of the softface mallet. Cheers, Aaron.

Hi Aaron, thanks so much for doing these. I’ve been concentrating so hard on CAM I’ve lost my way a little on some functions in CAD, so I’m going to work through this series to get back up to speed. Thanks bud 👍

G’day Rob. Oh you’re very welcome mate. These are simple models that I use with my high school students. Most have never drawn or used CAD before. The actually make all these models in the machine shop also. I hope you’re well buddy? Cheers 🍻

G'day Mike, you know me all too well buddy. Basic by name and basic by nature 😂. To be honest, I had given up on making CAD or CAM tutorials. But this FKN Lock Down and remote learning has forced me to do more. Frigging impossible to teach them CAD over a Zoom session. They get cranky and I get even crankier. Hopefully they can watch and complete it at their own pace. Cheers, Aaron.

@@DCT_Aaron_Engineering Aaron, I think this series works better than the previous tutorials. I wonder why? Perhaps you are doing it from a different point of view, I have no idea. As you know my Fusion knowledge is buggerall, but this series, makes it seem more usable, perhaps it is the simplicity of the exercises? Anyway, glad you decided to post these as public rather than unlisted. Does the Australian Standard require that views be named? Not sure it does, make that did, been a very long time since I looked at it. LOL Mine is dated 1992!

@@smallcnclathes G'day Nigel and thanks for the positive feedback. I see a lot of CAD tutorials and they want to design a space shuttle straight off the bat. I like modelling what the students have to make. I find that this helps them also make it once they model it first. Yes AS1100l.101-1992 specifies all of that. I'll attach a PDF link below for you. To be honest as you can see, I'm not a qualified draftsman. That's a trade / profession in its own right. Cheers, Aaron. astcad.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/AS1100.101-1992-Technical-Dwgs.pdf

G'day Rick. Thanks for stopping by mate. Happy to hear that I'm helping in some small way. These tutorials are for my high school students. We are in Lockdown over here in Melbourne, and it's impossible to teach CAD via a Zoom session. Cheers 👍, Aaron.

Suggestion. To make the design more parametric, rather use a center construction line and lock the screw holes to that with a constraint, or click on the width dimension and divide by two. Then whenever the design is changed later, it will stay in the middle. I know that you are working from a drawing out of a textbook, but I believe that it is a good practice to get early on.
@DCT_Aaron_Engineering
@DCT_Aaron_Engineering 3 года назад
G'day and thanks for watching. Yes that's a good tip. I would also strongly suggest using parameters and linked measurements in your design. That way any further modifications made in the parameters will rebuild the model and it won't fall over. These are only beginning tutorials for my high school engineering students. Most have never used CAD or even drawn / sketched before. Thanks for stopping by. Cheers, Aaron.

I should have waited for this before I moved on to the multi component part. Is there a way to separate the assembly components after I have already created the pieces? I think in Freecad you can reassign pieces in the tree menu but not sure I can do that here. These are awesome btw. I know you are doing them with a specific purpose but they are more informative than most tutorials I have seen. Well done! All the best, Eddie

Right Click on the bodies and create components from bodies.

Hi Eddie. Bosbulls beat me to the comment. That is correct, in the tree scroll down to the bodies (may have to expand them) right click on the body and select create a component from bodies. However, best practice to create a component right from the get go. Cheers, Aaron.

@@DCT_Aaron_Engineering Thanks professor, better late than never😁. I was not too far in so I just started over and practiced best practices. Sorry about the lockdown but believe me it could be worse. They are near max hospital bed capacity again in my area. I think we are at 30% vaccinated in my state with enough spare supply to be at 100%. Neverending.

@@DCT_Aaron_Engineering Thanks Aaron, I will look at what they have. I don't have to worry about gears , springs and fasteners etc as they are all built in to my software. Enjoying this series, makes me go look at my own software to see if it has the ability to do what Fusion does.

@@smallcnclathes Thanks Nigel. I used to be strong advocate of Fusion360 once. I don't anymore. Don't get me wrong, it's awesome software, but I get it for free as a teacher. Many people are telling me lately about a new one called free CAD, but I haven' t had the time to check it out.

@@DCT_Aaron_Engineering Freecad has been around a long time, it is open source and some folks swear by it and others swear at it. LOL. Seems to have some bugs, but I only use it as a file converter. One thing I don't think my version of Keycreator can do, is create a solid from a STL. Freecad can, so I have used it for that, then I take that solid into my own cad. Thanks for the link to the Standard but I actually have it. Needed it as a reference when I went self employed as a draftsman. I know architects always name their views but in engineering practice it is, (I think) mainly sections that are named because they need to be. What is taught and what is general practice do not always align I guess.
@theeddies
@theeddies 3 года назад
@@DCT_Aaron_Engineering Freecad is great for what it is, an open source way to experiment in new ways of accomplishing the same results. But at this stage, having played with both I would say Fusion is leaps and bounds above it. The interface is much better, the common tools are more accessible. The UI for fusion is just so much more intuitive. There is nothing I have found yet that Freecad offers other than being free that Fusion does not beat it at. There are also a few bugs in Freecad that can totally ruin a project right now. Chamfering or radiusing is hit or miss or even a nightmare. I did a radius on a part and it turned the whole edge inside out. I went to try to find help how to fix it and everyone told me "yeah it does that, you have to not radius those edges". Given that the step history is hit or miss there is sometimes not a great solution to a glitchy operation which wastes a bunch of time.
