@plentyness there is no property in that city anymore,it either been destroyed or flooded by a bankless river Thames and,again, with the loss of a 1/3 of the countries ENTIRE economy,its government,its leaders and 10% of the countries population,native or not,being dead,not to mention the cost of trying to rebuild,there wouldn't be a long run or any other kind of run, because the UK would NEVER recover.

@plentyness "Little Boy" and "Fat Man" were the very first nukes. Modern nukes can be around 3000 times more powerful than either one of those. This London,as said in the video,was hit by something "with a force significantly greater than a nuclear warhead" so take that 3000 times increase and multiply THAT by only God knows how much and thats the blast we have here.

if it was about the size of a telephone pole the military already has determined it would hit with about 12 tons of tnt. thats about .01 of a one kt nuclear blast, hiroshima was about 15kt. The blast would take out several city blocks as a surface detonation. Hard to stay what a sub terreranian hit would do.

@@hazardous458 Nah, even though you assume the rod to have a mass of 1 ton and drop form infinity to maximize potential energy with neglecting of air friction, the total energy is about 10^10 Joules (E=GMm/r) whereas the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima had the energy of about 10^13. In other words, if you need this rod to have the same energy as a nuclear bomb, it should have at least 1000 tons which are half a mass of space shuttle. lol

TheHeroan After researching it (really fun topic). The goal of kinetic bombardment is to deliver quick orbital strikes with near impossible chance to stop it or detect it. Won’t cause a lot of damage. Also,why platinum? I assume it’s to sound fancy in the movie but tungsten is near better in every way along with it being cheaper. Also, platinum is half as heat resistant as tungsten, reentering can get as hot as 1600c and platinum has a melting point of 1700c. Since rods travel much faster through the atmosphere, I expect it to reach over 1600c so there’s a chance of the platinum melting.

This cobra actually works. He has the helmet from the show and a voice you can actually take seriously. While the voice from ROC was ported from the show, it just didn't work for a movie. Some things are just better off left alone, but other things are in need for necessary change (Cobra's voice in this case)

The only other one I’ve seen this intimidating was the one from that GI Joe Renegades show, which I personally liked more as a realistic villain. This Cobra was definitely more of a global threat.

The best part of this is, the science behind that weapon is VERY REAL! Fractional Orbital Bombardment is an immensely powerful method of delivering devastation similar in scale to a Nuke. The fact they even specified they were using Tungsten Rods is perfect, since Tungsten being the densest non-radioactive Element in all of known existence makes it the best option for a F.O.B.S Projectile.

Sorry to burst your bubble but Project Zeus is based off of kinetic bombardment not FOBS as denoted by the statement "no fallout". The science is indeed really fascinating behind orbital bombardment. Just wish it was more applicable to real-world examples.

Never can ever this be applicable. First the fuel used to take those rods to space is fallout itself. And the rods will only reach earth if they are thrown from the orbit of earth and not space. The rods will melt away a significant amount of their mass without reaching earth. The probability of the rod falling in the ocean is very high which would be entirely wasteful.

Isn't it interesting how military-based supervillains are a bit more menacingly destructive than the ones who are more randomly constructed with revenge or survival or even supernatural in their missions? That I believe is the beauty of what makes them a bit more savage than some of the others.

You have to admit, the idea or Orbital Kinetic Rod weaponry is scary as hell. It's not nuclear, or explosive nor chemical so it isn't prohibited by the Outer Space Treaty. It's exactly what it is, an extremly fast metal rod. (well tungsten to be precise)

It wouldn't be near as devastating as the movie makes it out to be though. Drop one on London, it would probably take out a few blocks to be sure, but it wouldn't sink the entire city.

Wouldn't be surprised if we already had them. The movie exaggerated though. And Platinum coated? Why? So they are shiny? Now a telephone pole sized one would take out a mile. About 10x the power of the moab. Or the same as a 256,000lb high explosive. Devastating to be sure but no where near all of London. Now.. back one up.. ion rocket it to 70,000mph.. or use a bigger one, then, maybe. They are great bunker busters. Very hard to detect until it's too late and nearly impossible to stop. But also very expensive to get to orbit. So you wouldn't use one unless you had something really deep you needed to penetrate. Conventional bombs would just be a lot cheaper in all other cases.

@@hellsgate09 wont be a weapon of mass destruction its a bunker buster at best. Its a harp pointing thinn rod. So it will just burry into the ground and use all of the energy with almost none effect around it. You need a large surface to do damage but to be mass destrouction you need meteors the sice of small towns.

If I were him I would quickly realize that means all of parliaments dead. Meaning britian no longer has a government. Then I would quickly draw back the military that's stationed in other parts of the world declare martial law and slowly turn England back into an absolute monarchy crown myself king of England then invade France to undo the ending of the 100 years war. And then crown myself king of France as well and then draw up plans to retake Jerusalem in the 10th crusade. In other words I'd be the REAL super villain in the room.

Quix Silver Too funny, you really think it would work! The law I am referring to is: an object in motion will stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force. The satellite and the warhead are both in Earth orbit. Releasing the warhead will do nothing to it, as gravity is already a component of the satellite’s (and warhead’s) orbits. The warhead, when released, would just sit there, not moving, because there is no unaccounted force to accelerate it towards the Earth. Gravity is countered by the satellite’s velocity. Without gravity, the satellite would speed off away from the Earth in a straight line. Ask your middle school science teacher if I am wrong, or read a book on orbital mechanics.

This system doesn't simply drop the rod, which would produce the effect you described, the satellite gives the rod just enough of a shove to knock it out of orbit which puts into motion. The line from the movie is an oversimplification of the complex physics involved with this kind of weapon

robby jones sorry, you are wrong! They specifically state in the movie the weapon is not accelerated. Watch it again. Also, it would take a larger amount of deltaV then you think to accelerate it to a speed where it would have the kinetic energy required to generate that level of destruction.

Its so many good things about this once scene and I always come back to watch it and im more amazed every time. The smile on his face when he is explaining the rod as its falling, the sound when the rod hits the ground, the gasps from everyone in the room, no big fire ball and smoke, just a perfect visual of destruction and chaos in an instant. Brilliant scene
