In January 2011, Lacy Aaron Schmidt fatally murdered his friend and former girlfriend, Alana Calahan, at her residence.
Lacy Aaron Schmidt was found guilty of felony murder while committing an aggravated assault, malice murder, possessing a firearm during the commission of a crime, and theft by taking a handgun in February 2012.
According to the prosecution, Lacy Aaron Schmidt premeditated the shooting and had stolen the firearm from Alana’s father.
They claim he shot the Harlem Middle School girl in the back of the head as she posted images to Facebook and then carried her body to the woods behind the house to hide the crime.
Aaron Schmidt received a life sentence.
Schmidt filed an appeal with the Georgia Supreme Court.
According to the appeal, Judge Michael Annis had failed to inform the jury.
They may have found him guilty of the less serious crime of involuntary manslaughter.
In addition, Lacy Aaron Schmidt claimed that his defense attorney was incompetent and that the penalty he received was an example of “cruel and unusual punishment.”
But the highest court, as stated by the justice who presides over the case, P. Harris Hines, has rejected every one of his reasons.

As i follow along watching this case and trial I feel the need to express my thoughts even though i know what i have to say doesnt mean much. Im deeply saddend for everyone involved in this tragedy. Everyone except for Aaron's biological Mother and father. They failed not only Aaron but all of their children in everyway possible. If only Aaron had a chance in life to feel truly loved and cared for. Instead he had to seek it out through another family. I feel this truly was an accident, but just by looking at Aaron he knows nobody cares enough to trust and believe anything he says since he has already lied so many times. Im heartbroken thinking he feels his life is worthless. Prison will not be good to him he will receive love and attention from all the wrong places. His poor soul. I will keep him in my prayers. I hope you all will too.

I feel the same way. Had I been on the jury, (realizing they saw photos we did not,) I'm wondering if I would have convicted him of anything but the obvious theft. I also think he has grounds for appeal on ineffective counsel. I'm so sorry for all, as you said, except for his biological parents.

You can't blame his mother as she was groomed and raped but her step dad. The trauma started before he was even born.

I agree. Its sad what happened but after all of it I do think it was an accident. He made a mistake and some poor decisions after because as you said he knew no one would believe him or even care. The whole thing is sad.

I agree. In my opinion I think this kid plundered too much at this families home, got caught with gun by Alana, and he shot her. May be wrong but, I can't understand any other motive. This is so crazy

Just curious, what is this “plundered” everyone mentions? I know the word in terms of pirates, but could you fill me in on the meaning in your usage? Tnx, & happy holidays! 🤟🏼

@midnightrun2764 I've always heard the word plundered used by my parents as: "Stop plundering around in that drawer and find me those keys"! So as to mean (looking) through a bunch of stuff. Lol

Yes. I still can't wrap my head around the fact that he thought killing her would keep him from getting caught! But, maybe where he had a horrible homelife and had been in jail before he didn't want to get caught. Idk. So sad for her family. They were so good to him!!

Defense requested 22 days to produce a mitigating witness, and didn't even talk to a psychiatrist or find *anyone* to bring in?! This lady should be disbarred. She may as well be working for the prosecution at this point. Smh.

He deserves life without parole. Yes he had a horrible childhood but he thought that killing someone who treated him like family was the best way to be able to spend time with the family is just crazy.
@kinseyclay

People do a whole lot worse with a whole lot more evidence and get life with parole. He's a minor and the evidence really I don't even think was enough to convict him for malice murder let alone life without parole.
@kinseyclay

I'm sorry but this lady saying that him serving time should have rehabilitated him is absolute bs. And she knows it. There is absolutely no rehabilitation in the system, it's actually quite the opposite. Not condoning what he did just saying, claiming him doing they tine should have rehabilitated him is such bs
