In January 2011, Lacy Aaron Schmidt fatally murdered his friend and former girlfriend, Alana Calahan, at her residence.
Lacy Aaron Schmidt was found guilty of felony murder while committing an aggravated assault, malice murder, possessing a firearm during the commission of a crime, and theft by taking a handgun in February 2012.
According to the prosecution, Lacy Aaron Schmidt premeditated the shooting and had stolen the firearm from Alana’s father.
They claim he shot the Harlem Middle School girl in the back of the head as she posted images to Facebook and then carried her body to the woods behind the house to hide the crime.
Aaron Schmidt received a life sentence.
Schmidt filed an appeal with the Georgia Supreme Court.
According to the appeal, Judge Michael Annis had failed to inform the jury.
They may have found him guilty of the less serious crime of involuntary manslaughter.
In addition, Lacy Aaron Schmidt claimed that his defense attorney was incompetent and that the penalty he received was an example of “cruel and unusual punishment.”
But the highest court, as stated by the justice who presides over the case, P. Harris Hines, has rejected every one of his reasons.

Prosecutor needs to stop calling him a man. He's 16 whether she likes it or not. 🤷‍♂️

Agreed. And he wasn't even 16 when it happened just at the moment in court

If he loved them why did he steal from them and after being admonished for breaking the rules about being in the house alone with Alana…. He kills his beloved friend. That boy had stolen that gun after stealing Alana’s house keys and stealing other items all after Mr. Callahan had went out of town. He killed Alana because “she got him in trouble”. That’s not love, that’s hate. If he wasn’t incarcerated he would most likely kill again. Sociopath or Cold blooded Psychopath

13:30 - wellp. That explains the ineffectualness of his counsel. 🙄

I don't understand how the defense attorney can state what the defendant's state of mind or intent was when there was NO testimony by the defendant or any other witness to anything he said before heading over to the Callahan residence? It seems to me tantamount to just making stuff up.

The defence closing arguments is the worst closing arguments I've ever seen... calling him a " stupid kid" so damaging. Then repeating he would never hurt the family...ummm until he did. And woahhhhh throwing his sister under the bus much. Saying how neglectful she was and how he would rather be in the bush than home. This is the only person who was his blood to take care of him and try to place boundaries and rules for him. I hope they find him guilty this is open and shut case.

Honestly, it was the most ineffectual counsel I think I've ever seen. Even Darrell Brooks did better, lol. She never objected, never cross-examined witnesses more than 2 questions, and didn't bring any testimony to bear on his behalf at all. Yeah, he's guilty, but i would've liked to have seen a better defense. She could (and should) have argued the "accidental" narrative, not this "traumatic upbringing" opening statement without ever presenting evidence... even with evidence, it was a weak argument that made him look more guilty than less. Honestly, she seemed to be in over her head.

Prosecution did great job she did wonderful! And nailed it he wanted her gone and wanted to take her spot after she jeopardized his obsession of this family .

After watching the closing arguments It’s an interesting contrast with these two lawyers. The defense attorney seem to ramble at times, and was even admonished by the judge. She was not very polished, and seemed out of her depth. Whereas the prosecuting attorney was well prepared and on point. It truly does speak to the degree of professionalism. If I was in trouble, I wouldn’t want that defense attorney, representing me, and that’s for sure and for certain.

100%... she really stumbles and appears to be nervous and unsure of her arguments

I don’t agree, I thought she did a good job of defending her client.

Ummmm it's called having money or not. Public defenders are paid a lot less and overworked. A public defender is not going to be as good as the DA's office. Also when you don't have much to work with there's not much you can do. The prosecution has a bad attitude and is obnoxious. She's a mean girl who really enjoys getting paid to be one in court.

Defense attorney had ZERO to work with.

And pointing and pulling the trigger on a gun in a room full of people, twice, which was unnecessary is something that as a lawyer she should know better than to do. Defense is arguing an accident happened cuz he wasnt using proper gun etiquette which does happen then the prosecution points a gun at the jury...wtf

prosecutor needs to go take some firearm training she never cleared it her trigger discipline is abhorrent. and read the instructions? has she ever met a man? Thats the kinda thing that'll get ya kicked out of the man union

So did he shoot her from behind and above close range or did he shoot her from the side...prosecution claimed the whole trial that it was from behind, above and close until the medical examiner said it was from the side and upward, not downward. So she changes her arguments now....he did it and it was wrong but i truly wonder if it was an accident....there's not enough evidence and theres contradictory evidence...by the law he shouldnt have been found guilty when there is plenty of reasonable doubt
