Galantis - Runaway (U & I) | Theory & Arrangement Breakdown

Back for another Breakdown, Pyramind’s Matt Donner uses Ableton Live to walk through the music theory behind Runaway (U & I) by Galantis. He builds the chord progression and uses FloatKeys, a Max for Live plugin, to display the notes he plays.
Matt uses his favorite concept - “complexity equals simplicity” - to teach students that complex music theory can help simple song arrangements reach their full potential.
In “Runaway (U & I)”, the main chord progression is in G♭ Lydian. In the Lydian mode, the 4th scale degree is raised a half step compared to the standard major scale. This makes the II chord in the progression major instead of minor. Additionally, the fourth chord in the progression is F dominant 7, which does not exist naturally in G♭ Lydian. This is where the “complexity” comes in. Now, the chord progression can be repeated without getting boring.
We have included helpful visuals of the progression so that you can build these chords yourself. This is a must watch for Galantis fans, and any music producer struggling with theory and arrangement techniques.

It's going to start looking like I am picking on you, but Galantis is doubt written in Db. The three chords we looked at here are: IV, vi, V. Then the Fº7 is trying to tonicize the vi chord (Bb Minor). And yes, it tricks us and resolves to the IV, allowing us to loop back again. Through the rest of the song, they use a different pattern that features the tonic Db chord. It goes: IV, ii, vi, I during the verse. You don't have to hit the tonic for a song to be written in that key, but it is helpful for establishing where we are. I like the creative thinking used in order to analyze what's going on here, and since the music was never written out, it doesn't matter too much how we look at it. We could say that every chord here is outside of the implied key and should be analyzed in G Double Sharp, but it would be ten times harder to analyze! :-P

Once again Matt...you are an endlessly likable instructor. Well done. I would love to take a course with you guys and have had some dialogue with the sales team. Problem is it's too pricey for me right now. Plus I don't feel so confident in that I don't play keys or guitar. Still I watch your video from beginning to end and soak it up like a dry sponge. @9Syren9

That was fantastic. I personally don't feel like that's very Lydian, I just think it starts on a different chord in the key, but that's one of the great things about music theory, it's not definitive. Our differing interpretations can both be correct. More importantly, I love that use of the diminished chord with the F in the bass to create the dominant. I'd listened to that song a lot and loved that chord choice, but never took the time to deconstruct it and find out what's really going on, so thank you so much. I love these videos, Matt. Please keep doing this kind of video as frequently as you can.
@9Syren9
@9Syren9 7 лет назад
I've continued to analyze this song since, and I'm now much more inclined to agree with its Lydian identification. I do still believe that other interpretations could be accurate as well, but Matt nailed it even more than I realized at first.

my only suggestions is to start with chords that are the key of the song you are deconstructing so right away we the listeners can identify then go into details of other root notes or chords at the end. I hope that makes sense.
