Galaxy S5 Screen Removal September 2016 Update

This tutorial demonstrates how to remove the display from your Samsung Galaxy S5 without breaking it. Almost any repair for this phone requires removing the display since the access screws that allow you to remove the logic board are located behind the AMOLED. In the video we use a phone that has never been opened before and still has the manufacturers water resistant adhesive holding it in place.

Worked like a charm!! I had dropped my phone this morning went to check my phone my screen was black all the buttons worked and I could hear it there was just nothing on the screen. So I did what you did turns out all that happened was the cord unplugged from inside I plugged it back in tested it like you did and it was back up and running!! Thank you so much!

I appreciated the video and tricks provided. I found it to be the best one I have found. I started with my wife's old s5 that stopped charging last year. We got her a new phone, and use the old one wireless charging for the patio. Now mine has stopped charging but I am ready to replace the charging port. After watching this video, like "Papa Jahat" commented, I too, ripped the L shape brown copper part at the top right corner, which has a little chip attached. After plugging the screen back in to test it, I found that it turns on and goes to the main screen, but there is nothing else that works. You can't open an app or any other function so it is an obvious major thing that can't get damaged, so now I have to replace the LCD screen. I am about to attempt it again on my own Galaxy S5, and hope to have success with this video, but an extra precaution when sliding the playing card downwards on the top right corner. I think this being the case, and since I am going to replace the charging port, I am going to work from the bottom of the phone since the charging port comes with new stickers that could be ripped off starting from the bottom. In fact, since a charging port is only $5.99 with free shipping from ebay, it should just be something everyone replaces if they are going thru the trouble to take off the glass. Obviously S5's are old, so I am assuming there was no new videos for this model.

It comes with All the tools etc so tommorow I will be having a go to put my new charge port in. Hopefully it goes well and I will take my time and use plenty of heat. I will let you know if I do it good. Thanks for your help. Merry Christmas

It's ok if you are replacing the display with another one but if you're just removing it and want to replace the same one, then this is actually the best way.

Thank you for this. Do you have one on replacing the charging port on this Galaxy S5 when the screen is cracked. I am trying to move all data to another galaxy 5 but, I need the port to work. I know about using smart switch, etc but, I wanna use Mobile Trans App to move all the data.

Did you use a hair dryer/blower to heat the stuff you needed to? Planning to replace my main camera and charging port so I want to get everything right.
@hawaiisidecar
@hawaiisidecar 8 лет назад
A couple points. Heat from the back helps. Lifting the screen all the way to the bottom will result in torn soft keys. More care and slower opening to make sure they aren't stuck or tear. Razor is a bad idea for lift. Use a suction cup to pull up and insert the cards. Take care pushing the cards in so they don't get caught on the AMOLED.
@GoCellPhoneRepair
@GoCellPhoneRepair 8 лет назад
Thanks for the input. Yeah this one was warm enough that it kind of just fell open without really sticking to the capacitive buttons. It's been 90 degrees F plus all week so that probably contributes to the ease of removing adhesives. Are you running into problems using a razor to start the prying? I've found it to be the easiest most reliable way to open most phones as long as you are sure to get under the paint and don't slide it but rather prop the screen up enough to insert a thin pry tool.
@hawaiisidecar
@hawaiisidecar 8 лет назад
Go Cell Phone Repair Hey bro whatever works. In my experience the S5 does not need prying up to get clearance for the playing cards. After enough heat a good suction cup at the corner will separate the glass enough to get a card started. I do use shaved thin guitar picks to increase the opening slightly for the card to slip under the AMOLED. The hard metal razor blade has potential to scratch or break the glass. I just try to minimize risk.
@GoCellPhoneRepair
@GoCellPhoneRepair 8 лет назад
Got it. What do you use when unable to get good suction on the glass?
@hawaiisidecar
@hawaiisidecar 8 лет назад
Go Cell Phone Repair If the glass is shattered to the point where you can not get suction who cares. I was talking from the stand point of removing a good screen to replace something internal. If the screen is good I don't want to pry at all. Too easy to break.

I see. Recycling companies pay about $50 credit for cracked glass but working AMOLED+digitizer so I'm in the habit of keeping them in working condition. It allows us to do the repair for less.

Will this remove its IP certification once you disassemble it? I have a broken charging port I'm planning on fixing/replacing it myself, great tutorial BTW Thanks in advance...
@GoCellPhoneRepair
@GoCellPhoneRepair 7 лет назад
Yes it will. We recommend applying new adhesive after thoroughly cleaning the old stuff off although technically you can get away with reusing it. Once your phone is opened though it will never be quite as water resistant as it was from the factory. You could go wireless charging but that's not always convenient of course.

Hi, this is an excellent video, I would like to thank you for this. I am in the process of removing the screen right now. I have cards all over the screen, most of the adhesive is gone, but I am going to sleep for tonight. There is something that caught my eye though.. It seems I have accidentally got rid of the adhesive between the screens frame.. and the screen.. A little bit. Aside from that however, I decided to put the battery back in just to test things, and nothing shows up on the screen :(. I know the phone turned on however because it still vibrates and produces notification colors and what not. It's just the display. No display at all. Is this because I have playing cards all over the phone? Or did I ruin the phone in general? I will find this out tomorrow.. when I get rid of all the adhesive.. But I just wanted to hear from you if I should continue this project to save time or not. I really need a working phone as soon as possible. Please note, I'm not removing the screen for a screen replacement. I have no replacement. The charging port broke and I just wanted to replace it. Thank you, and have a nice day.

Make sure that the display cable is properly attached. If it is you might have damaged the flex cable at the top or cracked the AMOLED. Both of the latter are bad news 😕

Have you (tried and) succeed at replacing just the charging port on this one? I mean just soldering a new connector, not the whole lower board?
@GoCellPhoneRepair
@GoCellPhoneRepair 7 лет назад
I haven't only because since you're already inside of the phone it's easy enough to just replace the whole piece. On the other hand with the S6 and S7 we always desolder and replace the micro USB and it works great as long as you are careful not to damage nearby components.
@camurgo
@camurgo 7 лет назад
I see, but I ask particularly because the S5 has a larger 3.0 "Micro-B" usb connector. I found it trickier to get right than most other types.

So, I decided to finally give this a try with my S5, which needs a new charging port, loudspeaker, and headphone jack. Fortunately, I removed it without breaking the AMOLED. Unfortunately, I accidentally tore the ribbon cable for the digitiser, so now the touch screen is dead... Whoops

Not quite as effective since it takes a lot longer to heat up. Also dipping the edge of your playing card into 99% isopropyl alcohol will help getting through the adhesive easier.

I am having a hard time separating the top glass from the digitizer. Any suggestions for this?
@GoCellPhoneRepair
@GoCellPhoneRepair 6 лет назад
So you are attempting a glass only repair on the S5? If that's the case you'll need a heat source, playing cards, molybdenum wire, and a lot of patience. It's really something that requires practice though so if this is your first one the chance of causing damage to the AMOLED is high. Are you doing this inside of the frame?
@InsaneBass247
@InsaneBass247 6 лет назад
Thank you for the fast response. Not glass only. I am trying to do the exact same thing that you are doing in your video. I have tried this on multiple S5's and each time I cannot get underneath the digitizer. The digitizer ends up ripping away from the glass...
@GoCellPhoneRepair
@GoCellPhoneRepair 6 лет назад
Ah I see. Well it's kind of difficult to put into words but you need sufficient heat from the back side where the battery is removed but not so much on the front that the LOCA allows the lens to start separating from the digi. You may need more heat on the back and less on the front but it's really hard to say. I don't know if it will help but I made a video for the S5 Active which is even more difficult IMO. Right after the 4 minute mark is where I started to get under the display ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-h2dSRa4QZk4.html

If your screen is broken there is a chance that it will be even worse if I remove it. I do have a working screen here if you want me to create a backup and then send the file to you. Otherwise you'll most likely need the screen replaced if attempting to open the phone for port repair.

@GoCellPhoneRepair

I'm going to guess that FDR is talking about coating the playing cards with iso to help work through the adhesive. I do this myself when working with something really sticky. Used that and heat to remove the old chrome trim on my car doors when it started fading. That and heat works wonders. As far as the suction cup you can use it to pull the display from the front if the glass is in one piece. Just be careful not to use too much heat as it is possible to lift the glass away from the AMOLED if you aren't careful.
@saibogu009
@saibogu009 8 лет назад
Kind of like that... And I like that idea, but we use a lot more than a coating! To be fair, I'm kinda cheating. The repair center I work for, which does a lot of accredited work for a certain company whose phone might be featured in this video, I can't really say to much... But anyway, we use a small specialist oven, phone goes in for 10 min in at 70 degrees celsius. Then it goes in a small spring loaded table vice (with plastic jaws, obviously). Now comes the magic, basically a jig that fits over the screen with suction cups and a screw that goes off to the side to lever the screen off (kinda hard to explain, sounds complicated but it's actually really simple if you saw it). The iso then gets swabbed generously about the edges of the screen as its lifted off, the suction draws it in and it releases the glue within seconds. Once it's in the jig it's open in a minute or so. But like I said, that kinda cheating ;) And great videos man, they've helped me out once or twice!
@saibogu009
@saibogu009 8 лет назад
I forgot to say though, a small clamp and a decent suction cup does pretty well. Main thing is swabbing the iso around the edges so when you pull the screen up a bit with the suction cup, it draws the alcohol down. That with a bit of heat really helps loosen up they tapes :D

if there are cracks on that glass then the chances are you going to break it about 70%
@GoCellPhoneRepair
@GoCellPhoneRepair 8 лет назад
I absolutely agree that cracked glass is a consideration since it helps to support the AMOLED. That said, we have been using the same method since the S5 was released and once you get the hang of it you'll rarely if ever break the display. Just take your time and make sure not to flex it too much. As Hawaiisidecar mentions below heating from the back in that situation, specifically inside of the battery compartment, will help to better release the "L" shaped adhesive.
