Game engines are basicly interfaces for developers that have many standart things already intergrated to make the life of developers just a bit easier just like how skype makes it easier to communicate with other people (just to use a popular example). Depending on the developer it can take a rather long time to get a 3D cube rendered from scratch. Let alone making it possible to apply textures and materials to that cube while also having light sources cast their rays into the scene as well as being able to apply realistic physics to them. And dont get me started on particle and animation systems. Some engines have more advanced versions of certain systems (like Source's physics back in the day) than others but ultimately it boils down to the same thing, a game engine does a bunch of complicated tasks for the devs so that they dont have to and can focus more resources on making the actual game.

"I know! What if a character could jump!" I found that very funny. Mostly because it is such a divisive topic for me. I don't find myself liking games in which I can jump. It seems like such a minor thing on paper, but I am surprised at just how many games don't include almost any real vertical mechanic in their games. With a few exceptions (pretty much Dark Souls), games in which you cannot jump don't suck me in, and mostly feel stale, and jarring. Seeing an insignificantly small barrier over which I cannot move being used as a way of blocking off paths just annoys me to no end.
@Kaerusss
@Kaerusss 8 лет назад
Sometimes jumping really works for a game, sometimes it's thrown in because developers think it will be familiar enough to turn out OK even if it's poorly adapted.
@jordyboy62
@jordyboy62 8 лет назад
Jumping is most closely tied to platformers hence why non-platforming games have no jump ability as it helps to differentiate the game.

Greyghostvol1 well, the people who run Folding@Home have similar qualifications to me, so there is some relevance to my course. In fact, protein folding is based on quantum electrodynamic interactions, which - due to its root in quantum mechanics - would fall under theoretical physics. Also, you don't need a degree in applied physics to enrol in one on theoretical physics. You just need a decent level-3 qualification in general physics to enrol in either. It would certainly help, but it wouldn't be essential.

TBH, I'm pretty sure it's that Taiwan guy who cant speak English. I'm hoping its just taking a while for the new editors to figure out how to edit videos so they are funny without being stupid. Disliking because of how shitty and unrelated the b roll and sound editing was. Really? a fart sound on the 3D body model? The new editors just aren't as sharp as the old ones, and it really bugs me.

I dabbled a bit in game developing myself, using unity. One thing I find funny is people fighting over game engines, arguing things like this has better physic simulation or this has better graphics etc etc etc. The thing I found is this argument is very similar to people arguing that JAVA is better than C++ or C# or what ever language they are used to. It just goes around and around in a never ending argument of useless points. I'm pretty sure that java, c#, and c++ or unity, cryengine and unreal can do whatever the other can. Although their solutions may differ but the result can be very similar.
@jokesterthemighty227
@jokesterthemighty227 8 лет назад
+wakojako49 weeelll sort of... C++ has lower level capabilities than neither java or C# has. As far as the game engines you mentioned, they are all pretty good but except from unity, crytek and unreal needs a whole team to work with, not to mention compile times for f*ck sake
@JACKOFALLFATES
@JACKOFALLFATES 8 лет назад
+Jokester The Mighty maybe you should do some research because C# compiles on the MONO compiler which goes NATIVE after that. Meaning C# compiles to your precious C++ in unity. Programming in C++ can be useful if you want to waste your time with the syntax. I prefer C# because it's soon going to be 100% native (leaving the java intermediate world) and It enables me as a developer to write things quickly and straight to the point while keeping a clean workflow.
@tom5243
@tom5243 8 лет назад
+wakojako49 True, but the different languages/engines can do things more efficiently and with less code that the others. Its situation based really
@ZILtoid1991
@ZILtoid1991 8 лет назад
+wakojako49 A lot of things in the engine also depends on how they're used. There are a countless crappy games made in Unity, while the engine itself is capable of doing really beautiful things. Trust me, I started to develop a 2D engine in D, and I still haven't done anything with it (other than it can render 7000+ sprites on the screen by CPU at 60FPS) as I have to implement everything from sketch. Now I'm working on a map editor and a sample game, then I'll add some effects.
@jokesterthemighty227
@jokesterthemighty227 8 лет назад
Unity has IL2CPP that's why it compiles to C++, it's not something C# has by default. C++ has lower level capabilities which aren't useful if you aren't going to make an engine yourself. I also prefer C# over C++ definitely, in fact I haven't wrote anything in C++ game related for a couple of years now, no need for it, Unity has everything

Why do CPU sockets change with every generation? And usually only for like 1 pin and such. Why don't they make a universal socket for all future CPUs so you could keep your motherboard for at least a little longer? I'd like to see a video on that!
@toxicnos1
@toxicnos1 8 лет назад
It depends but one reason is so people aren't putting CPUs in motherboards that arn't compatible.
@MikoKnight
@MikoKnight 8 лет назад
Toxicnos Yeah I can imagine that but what really changes in the basic compatibility? Some of the inner structure yeah but what they do from CPU to CPU is mostly just going smaller so they can fit more in them. I'm no specialist on this matter but it would really interest me to know more.
@MishMash95
@MishMash95 8 лет назад
+Miko That wouldn't leave enough room for fundamental architecture change, the other point is that assuming we want enough leeway for future generations, that would lead to wasted space on current chips. Wasted space is wasted money and wasted performance. Plus there is nothing wrong with making sure motherboards are as up to date as the hardware they support. It means device interaction is much more stable and processors can introduce new features that a motherboard must cater for in their spec, this would not be possible with a universal design.
@Deses
@Deses 8 лет назад
+Miko A new CPU family is out and it only supports DDR4. Would it be compatible on a motherboard with an older chipset that only works with DDR3? Nope! Here comes a new socket to differentiate the designs. It's basically the same reason why RAM slots change.

An additional note, Valve doesn't license out the Source Engine. Like Unity, it's free to use and modify, as long as its source code isn't given out. Lots of games have been made on Source, with only mapping, engine modding, and resource addition to be done.
@DiaaGames
@DiaaGames 8 лет назад
That is it? come on linus i thought you would cover everything :( make part 2 please you should have mentioned the best part which is anyone who tried to make games before and failed because it was hard that is no longer the case because engines these days do the heavy lifting all you need to do is import your characters and move them to make a game PS: dont use unreal use Unity :)
@DFX2KX
@DFX2KX 8 лет назад
+DiaaGames what's wrong with Unreal? Given the two? I'd lean toward Unreal on account of better 64bit support. Unity isn't bad, though. Or Game Maker, if you're aiming for 2D (or are insane and are willing to do all of the 3D work yourself.... like, uh.... me....)
@DiaaGames
@DiaaGames 8 лет назад
DFX2KX The workflow of unreal forces you to make an fps plus if you want to switch to something like hack n slash you will literally take ages to figure out how to do it or you will end up changing the source code unreal engine makes life harder for programmers easier for artists when you choose between unity and unreal you are actually making your first game decision whether its going to be featuring fantastic gameplay and ok graphics or bad/good duplicate gameplay and fantastic graphics
@DFX2KX
@DFX2KX 8 лет назад
DiaaGames That's a fair point to make, because Unreal is an FPS engine, but it doesn't force you to do it, so much as it makes it easier to do that type of gameplay. And Unity has the same limitation. It's also much easier to make an FPS game in Unity then other game types. That's because FPS games are pretty straightforward these days. And Unity games can look GOOD (see Naval Action), but they tend to have really bad memory use, for easons that baffle me.
@DiaaGames
@DiaaGames 8 лет назад
+DFX2KX Well you got everything right except the point that unity got limitation the whole point of using unity is there is no limitation as long as you have the idea you can waste 8 hours max and you will end up with a decent prototype sometimes all you need are minutes to make a prototype in the game industry you can start making a game while you are 20 and finish it while you are 22 that is 2 years of your life wasted on one game and that happens to all of the professionals i believe that this will change if they used unity its a matter of time before developers won't disagree that unity is the best engine on the market you can look at the road map of unity to tell i think it will be 1 to 2 years until that happens if it didn't happen you can come back here in the future and tell me the famous american phrase liar liar ur pants on fire lol :)
@DFX2KX
@DFX2KX 8 лет назад
DiaaGames The limitations in Unity come from the fact it's not good with memory. It's rendering engine is also less efficient. It might be a little easier to work with as a single programmer or do something creative, but these days? It comes down to graphics. The Naval Action folks are having to do bloody witchcraft to get their game above 20FPS in the over-world, and that's WITH reduced polygons. The ease of use that an IDE has is utterly irrelevant compared to the final product. If Unity starts cranking more polygons and shaders with a better frame-rate then Unreal's offerings at the time, then Unity will be the best engine on the market. People will keep those FPS games, be cause they're pretty. That's really the only requirement. By the standpoint of ease of use? Game Maker wins. Hands down. Take five minutes, buy the slayer 64 plugin, and in two minutes you've got a prototype. It'll look like shit, and nobody will care, but you'll have a game, and you won't even need to know what the code does. Now if you're like me, You use your OWN code to make GM: S 3D stuff, mostly because it's fun making things that look good with such limited software.

So no. BFH and BF4 are not the same game and never were the same game just because they use the same engine.

+CocoaNutCakery Who said they were?
@LZentertainments
@LZentertainments 8 лет назад
+CocoaNutCakery No. Basicially they are just built in the same way. There's entirely new models, textures, and well, level design - But since it's made in the same engine, lighting, particles and physics are largely the same. The game engine is basically just the tool a developer uses to make all the individual assets work together.

@antiHUMANDesigns

I'm a programmer. This video is half wrong about a number of things. For example, specific shaders are not a part of the Engine.
@antiHUMANDesigns
@antiHUMANDesigns 8 лет назад
***** Shaders are normally "assets". An engine is basically everything about a game that is *not* an "asset". Collision detection and repsonse is not an asset, though collision models are. So, yeah, the simplest way to define what a game engine is, assuming you know what an "asset" is, is that it is everything that is not an "asset".
@DFX2KX
@DFX2KX 8 лет назад
+antiHUMANDesigns Most engines these days come with stock shaders. Mind, you can replace all of them if you know GLES, of course.
@antiHUMANDesigns
@antiHUMANDesigns 8 лет назад
DFX2KX Yes, but they are still assets. Engines can come with assets when you buy/license them. But I agree that in some cases, the shaders are built in to the engine. I know, because I wrote an engine that creates shaders at run-time. But that doesn't mean it's true to say that "shaders are part of the engine", just because they *could* be. Anything *could* be built in to an engine. They will still be assets, whether the engine creates them, or artists do.
@DFX2KX
@DFX2KX 8 лет назад
antiHUMANDesigns I've always heard it said that an asset is anything not hard-coded directly into the core renderer/sound system of the game, the engine is everything that is. And it would appear that most engines have some shaders hard-coded into them. and a basic sound system hard coded in, as well.
@antiHUMANDesigns
@antiHUMANDesigns 8 лет назад
DFX2KX Yes, that is true, but that's because it makes no sense to hard-code the contents of a game into the engine, because then the engine is less useful. That's also why shaders normally aren't hard-coded, because then you can't supply your own shaders. You might get a little bit of performance boost by doing that, but it's hardly worth making the engine useless in the future. So anything that doesn't belong as hard-coded into the engine is going to be assets used for specific games. Things that can change, because it is "content", rather than architecture. A "sound system" is part of the engine, definitely. It is a sub-section of the engine, perhaps even refered to as a "sound engine", or such. The actual *sounds* are not, though. It seems like you're mixing up a "sound system" with a "sound".

so linus which game engine is the best in 2016?
@doc6887
@doc6887 7 лет назад
UE4 or CryEngine if you want good graphics and performance. However, I know from experience that ue4 is terrible for very dynamic environments(the worst is changing terrain). Unity 5 is better, but apparently unstable. There is no "best" game engine, there is only the best for what game you want to do, and your budget/time(though ue4 and unity recently changed their terms to allow indies to comfortably use them). Sometimes, the best option is to write your own engine.

@doc6887
@doc6887 7 лет назад
I can't tell you what is best for you, you have to research that for yourself. But before you can even wonder what to use, you need to discover what you're good at and what you're willing to learn. Unity is definitely the easiest to learn on, with a very sleek sdk, and it uses c# for scripting.

in what language does games are programed? is it a custom/modified language in the engine?
@DFX2KX
@DFX2KX 8 лет назад
+atata9 Depends on the Engine. In a an IDE-based Engine like Game Maker? It's a custom language made just for that engine. (with GLSL for shaders) In an Engine like CryEngine or Unity (or Unreal, as well), it can be a mix of the built in custom language (what your art and level people will use, or what you'll prototype with) and C/C++/some other compilable language (which you'll do the heavy lifting of your game logic with). Some older engines don't even have scripting support, like Doom, Quake 1 and 2, and Genisis3D....
