He also specifically waited to tell her about her impending marriage until after she gloated over Tyrion. Almost like he wanted her to show off how casually cruel she is.
The fact she believed she was only there to be smug at Tyrion is kinda hilarious, when Tywin does one better and says she'll be required to do the exact same thing as him. She thinks she knows her father so well, but completely disregards the fact that her father wouldn’t let her be apart of meetings just so she can mock others.

"It is past time you were wed." "I was wed." Dinklage delivers this line with such intensity, you really feel that wound of his first "marriage" will never truly heal
I cannot wait to read "Winds of Winter", where George RR Martin stated that Tyrion will find out "where whores go"... That is, if he can finish the freaking book in this lifetime...😅
You have to credit Tyrion for his genuine empathy towards Sansa. Tyrion knew that Sansa earlier lived in a fairy tale fantasy world of princes and princesses. He knew she needed to grow out it, but he also knew it was hard to think of anything crueler to her than to chain her to a Dwarf, and a member of the family that had decimated hers. Tyrion had no issue with paying whores to bed him, but had no delusions about what the prospect would do to Sansa. Also credit Dinklage for the acting job, once it sinks in what exactly Tywin has in mind.
Cersei’s last attempt at manipulation is to change her voice to that reminiscent of a soft spoken young girl and she begs Tywin “please father don’t make me do it again”. I love that part of this scene because it shows you the deep seeded ptsd Tywins kids still harbor from their childhood from being controlled by him for so long
I don't even know if that's an intentional manipulation on Cersei's part. She may just be mentally reverting to a childlike state after that. As you said, deep seated PTSD from childhood.
Arranged marriage is expected with lords and ladies. She didnt like Robert sure and will not like the effeminate Loras sure but she's really just a weirdo who wants to stay single and continue a taboo incest relationship.
Thing is... Tyrion was a good husband to Sansa.... and considering that a girl of Sansa's status doesn't get a choice in who she marries, Tyrion would've been the best husband she could hope for
Jon-Michael Harris Garlan the Gallant have said so. She was hoping to marry Mylas Tyrell(or whatever his name, I don't exactly remember), but Loras' elder brother have told her that Tyrion would be the best husband she could hooe for, if only she gives a chance
Disagree completely. I hate when people act like Sansa should be grateful for being with Tyrion. Most other girls have their marriages arranged by their fathers and they don’t have much say but they have the advantage that their father would usually find a decent man for her. She would trust her fathers judgement. Sansa didn’t have that because the marriage was arranged by Tywin, the man her brother was actively fighting against. People forget that Sansa isn’t all knowing like us, she doesn’t know Tyrion as a person and his motives. She was forced into a marriage by her enemy and married to her enemy. Tyrion was also fighting against her brother, he fought in a battle against her brothers men and for a full season fought to keep Joffrey in power. He only once helped by stopping Sansas abuse in the throne room but Sansa could have just seen that as a way to keep Joffrey in check. She couldn’t know whether Tyrion was looking out for her or just keeping Joffrey in line. He never does anything else to help her that she sees. He checks if she’s okay after the riot but he didn’t save her. Sansa wouldn’t see that as a kindness but just a formality. We know Tyrion and we like Tyrion but Sansa doesn’t and people gotta remember that. They whitewashed Tyrion in the show but the real Tyrion is very dark and says some disturbing stuff to Sansa. I’m not a Sansan shipper but honestly the way Tyrion turns out so far in the books I think Sansa would be better off marrying The Hound. Willas Tyrell would have been good even though Sansa was being used as a pawn she probably would have had a easy life, I’d say there’s a good few of the northern lords or their sons who would have treated her kindly too.
Tywin says at the beginning that their business here includes Cersei too, but shes so busy reveling in Tyrion's misery that she doesn't even question what her role is. Truly captures how short-sighted she is.
and she keeps doing it again and again. I was so ticked off with her being all hogh and mighty about the high sparrow when she was the one who gave him power in the first place cause she didnt like the tyrel girl woeing her son.
Charles Dance simply being great. His performance as Tywin was outstanding! I honestly believe he was the only one who actually knew how to play the Game of Thrones. A truly amazing character.
If he was still around after Season 4, I’m sure D&D would’ve butchered his character too. Every single character that’s supposed to be intelligent is turned stupid in order to drive the plot
Understated best part of this scene: Even after Cersei laughed at Tyrion's situation, he didn't laugh at hers. When Tywin revealed his plans for Cersei, Tyrion looked at her with concern. They never got along and she was always horrible to him, but he still cared for her and knew how traumatized she had been in her first arranged marriage. Such phenomenal acting by all three in this scene.
@@thomasraines1396Yeah in the books he's a bitter little cunt 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Understandable though as for all his life he's been mocked and ridiculed for being a dwarf and blamed for killing his mother. He still has a sense of humour but he's much more vicious and bitter in the books especially after killing Shae and Tywin
In the books Tyrion is much more…I won’t say evil, that’s too extreme, instead I’ll say “conflictive” The show changes him into more of a morally likable character.
How it should have gone: Tywin: "You're my daughter!" Tyrion: "Any man who must say 'you're my daughter' is no true father." Tywin: "Wait what?" Tyrion: "The hand of the king is tired, see him to his chambers." Tywin: "I'm not tired!"
The way he says You're late, already makes it a great scene. The fact that Tywin, Jaime, Cercei and Tyrion never share a scene together, is one of my biggest show regrets.
@@flightofthebumblebee9529 You clearly haven’t read the books. Considering that in the books it’s stated that: Joanna's marriage to Tywin was reportedly a happy one, and she became Tywin's trusted counselor and companion. Her influence on her husband was such that people say that Tywin ruled the Seven Kingdoms as Hand, "but was ruled at home by his lady wife.” She’s also the only person that is said to have ever gotten him to actually smile.
“No wonder the only person willing to marry him was his cousin.” Where in the books is Joanna being the “only” one willing to marry Tywin ever stated or even insinuated? Or did you just assume that?
I'm always blown away by the levels of dialogue and subtlety. It's insane thinking that after season 4, there are no scenes that are on the same level as even the most mundane scenes from the first 4 seasons.
Tywin: "Tyrion will do as he's bid. As will you." Cercei: "What do you mean?" Tywin: "You will marry the Night King." Cercei: "I will not." Tywin: "The Night King is heir to the North beyond the wall. Tyrion will secure the North and you will secure beyond that." Cercei: "No, I won't do it." Tywin: "Yes you will. You're still fertile. You need to marry again and breed more White Walkers."
Laughing at how Tywin shouts Cersei down but not Tyrion. He acknowledges Tyrion's concerns and in a twisted, Lannister way, kind of respects that Tyrion has them. On the other hand (not pun intended) he knows that Cersei is just whining for the sake of it
I think in a way he IS thinking about his kids too. Cersei needs to be married off politically, otherwise, she's useless to the family if not an outright liability with her scheming, but since she obviously doesn't like the idea, Sir Loras is a good fit since both will just have to get through the bedding on the wedding night and then neither has to touch each other again, which both will be fine with. Likewise with Tyrion, he's getting his son a pretty wife who's intelligent and emphatic, just like him. Furthermore, she'll be heir to the north once Rob's been dealt with. Tyrion would be hard-pressed to get a marriage that good if he wasn't a dwarf, being the second son. And here's why I think Tywin is partly doing this for his children's sake. If he just wanted to ruin the Tyrell plot, he would just have to marry one of them, not both. He could be using Cersei to secure another alliance.
@@tsgod6584 he’s only not cruel to Tyrion when he needs him. He continually screws him over until Tyrion can’t stand it and kills him. Besides Cersei Tywin was probably the most cruel to Tyrion, so I really don’t know what you’re talking about.
Every time I watch a Tywin scene from this series, for a few hours after, my posture is straighter and my voice has more command. He just inspires energy!
This era of the show was so freaking good. The Lannister's become the main characters in a way; all so compelling and well written, and ending in a Shakespearean tragedy with Tyrion killing Tywin. Just wonderful stuff.
Tyrion, saying how cruel it is to marry Sansa to himself, shows his self-awareness. While he was her best husband, and would treat her very well, he knows that she would be known as the bride of The Imp and would be degrading to her.
The look in Lena Headley's face when Tywin starts yelling is SUCH A GOOD representation of a person having a trauma response. The blank, wide-eyed stare into the middle distance, the lowered gaze, the quiet voice. What a fantastic actress she is.
@@Petey0707 I agree. My step-mom was forced to rush her first marriage with no ceremony. Was that matriarchy then since Tyrion was a man? No, its monarchy. Tywin is King (Lord) of Casterly Rock, and his children are his subjects
Based on "you're my daughter" and "they have my son", Tywin only yells when stating the location or general existence of one of his children. Other top hits (probably) include: "My son is in the privy!" "My daughter is over there!" "My grandson has been sent to bed!"
It's amazing how Twyin can see 3 steps ahead. He's already written off all the other stark children as heirs to the north, and landed on Sansa as the eventual heir with the knowledge available to him. He was truly one of the best players in the game of thrones.
I'd kill for a scene with him and Roose Bolton together. And Rasmey slapping around Joffrey. "You like to play games, little man?" "I am... the KING!" **slap**
One of the very, very few cases where the show version of the character is superior to the book version. And that's solely due to Charles Dance's amazing performance.
Charles Dance is an amazing character and portrays Tywin so well but I think it’s a little twisted to say Tywin is your favourite character. He’s a very evil guy who has arguably done worse things then Joffrey but people seem to forget about his past. He sent out The Mountain to rape and murder throughout the riverlands not attacking soldiers but innocent people. He sent the mountain to kill Elia martell and her children. He might not have ordered Gregor to do what he did but Tywin was fully aware what Gregor would likely do. He’s smart and Gregor isn’t a monster in disguise. Twyin murdered an entire family when they rose up against him. It would be like if Tywin wound you the starks and drowned them all in a cave. Do Sansa, Arya, bran or Rickon deserve to die if the adult members of their family disobeyed another lord? No but that’s how brutal Tywin is. Ned would never do that.

The Tyrells were 50,000-60,000 strong(I think) and Tywin had around 60,000 as well. With the Reach, the men and horses were way better supplied than Robb could hope to be. This is how marriages are arranged, privately, you would not shame another house by publicly turning down a suitor.. like they did in House of the Dragon
The most interesting part of this scene is that we see Tywin loves Cersei no more than Tyrion. The one thing Cersei has more than Tyrion that she’s not a dwarf, and because of that she’s a more valuable asset for Tywin.
He did love Cersei, but he was really disappointed by her mistakes as a Queen Regent, especially for raising Joffrey as stupid and spoiled brat, which went against his ideal of a Lannister king. After Tommen becomes king, he begins to realize that he needs to keep his younger grandchildren away from Cersei or they would be ruined as well.
I wish there was an alternate universe where Tywin was the main character of this show and made it to the end lol. Charles Dance is so good at this. Him and Sean Bean by far were the best actors on the show.
But that's not enough. I am a girl and if I would be in Santa's place I wouldn't be happy enough to marry tyrion even after knowing all these things. Tyrion was right here that Sansa deserved better
The sad thing about this is that this scene proves that Tyrion would have been a great husband for Sansa. The guy had integrity and empathy, more than the rest of his family, and I honestly think that given time, she'd have learnt maybe not to love him, but to accept him as a good husband who wasn't directly responsible for what happened to her family.
She was still a prisoner used like a brood mare. From her own perspective her marriage to Tyrion meant she was stuck in King's Landing with only enemies around her. Nobody would be happy with such a marriage, and Tyrion knows it.
The thing about Tywin, is he's always talking about Family, and making a legacy. When he doesn't really care about family, or his children at all. He cares about his name, Lannister. He cares that Lannister is the most powerful name in westoros, he cares that the name Lannister, will carry on for 1000 more years. when his sons were captured, he raised an army to go free them, not because he cared about their wellbeing, only because they were named Lannister, and how dare someone spit in the name of Lannister.
