Gannets are seabirds with a total length of 70 cm and a weight of 1 kg. Males have blue faces and females have pale yellow faces. When they fly over the ocean and spot a fish, they dive headfirst into the water and catch the fish with their beaks. The moment it dives, it folds its wings, forms a missile-like shape with little resistance, and makes a spectacular dive, making it a sight to behold.
カツオドリは全長70cm、体重1kgの海鳥で、オスは顔が青色、メスは淡黄色をしています。海上を飛行して、魚を見つけると頭から水中に飛び込み、くちばしで魚を捕らえます。飛び込む瞬間には羽を畳み、抵抗が少ないミサイルのような形になって見事なダイブをするので見応えがありますね。
With the active volcano Sakurajima emitting smoke in the background, gannets were actively diving for schools of sardines and horse mackerel in Kagoshima Bay. If it is a small fish, the gannet will swallow it underwater, but if it is a large fish, it will come to the surface, put it back in its mouth, and swallow it head first. It's funny to see how they panic and almost let the fish slip away, and how they struggle to swallow the big fish.
噴煙を上げている活火山の桜島を背景にして、鹿児島湾ではカツオドリがイワシやアジの群れを目掛けて盛んにダイブしていました。小さな魚であればカツオドリは水中で飲み込んでしまうのですが、大きな魚の場合は海面に出てから咥え直して、頭から飲み込みます。その時に慌てて魚を取り逃がしそうになったり、苦労しながらも大きな魚を飲み込む仕草が面白いですね。
Gannets move quickly, so I shot the close-up video at 120 frames/second and played it back at 60 frames/second, making it twice as slow-motion. I tried slowing down some of them even more.
カツオドリの動きは速いので、アップで撮った動画は120フレーム／秒で撮影して60フレーム／秒で再生することにより、2倍スローモーションの動画にしました。一部は更にスローにしてみました。
