Garnt's Issue With Final Fantasy Games 

Garnt wanting lore before finishing a game/story is basically him setting the plot to be like Fate.

Man calls himself a JRPG fan then says he hates turn-based combat and immediately says Cloud and Tifa lacking in personality when he only played a small part of it.

Ff7 is very deep, you just have to play through the whole story. The entire mindfuck that cloud goes through is insane and this makes his character very reasonable and important to me.

11:24 -11:26 It's Chrono Cross. Chrono Crusade is a manga series. Also pretty sure FF7 Remake is action jrpg not a turn based one. It has selectable commands like one, but it is ultimately action based. I think Grant is the under impression of the FF games giving instant answers or gratification as to what each character's deal is from the outset. Hence why he likes Barret cause most, (but not all), of his motivation & quirks are up front and center. Everyone else has a slow buildup into their overall characters.

There's a difference between normal trash taste and rather blatantly lying about FF's turn-based systems saying Chrono Trigger did it first.

Thinking back I think part of Cloud’s appeal at the time was that he was not the usual plucky everykid. He was a soldier with skills and an air of indifferent confidence, which definitely appealed to me as a teenager back then. One thing I remembered thinking was cool was how in the tutorials things were not explained to Cloud, but rather, he would explain things to Avalanche. It basically said, “You’re not playing as some kid with a sword this time. You get to start off as a badass.” Of course after that happened, we got a whole bunch of other brooding edgy protagonists and then it just started to get stale.

I’ve finished FFI and FFIV. Turn based combat is really fun imo, and I’m in the middle of FFVII and Dragon Quest III, but I’m almost done with the latter, but all of my JRPGs on my brother’s switch which is at college.

I swear those who register their times on howlongtobeat must be elite gamers because it takes me far longer to beat games

Playing the older games with a show or podcast or music playing is excellent. I usually use a walkthrough because I hate getting lost or turned around especially in old games where that can cost you tons of time. I played through all of FF1 one weekend listening to Dungeons & Daddies

Honestly Og VII isn’t grindy at all, like the only time I think I grinded was in the temple of the ancients just because bahamut could exp farm easily there.

If they like world building and good story, they really should give FF14 a try. It's a hard sell because of the time commitment but as many others can attest, the payoff is well worth it. I know Garnt played it but I assumed he stopped at some unknown point in time. Here is my vouch for the Trash Taste gang (and anyone else for that matter) to give FF14 a fair try. It's a rpg first and mmo second. And it tells one of the greatest story I've ever experienced in any medium (not just games).

This ain't it Garnt. On the flip side, I respect the dedication to the "Trash Taste" brand

In my case without counting spin-offs I've only finished Final Fantasy 9. Because I've always ended wanting to complete some of the sidequests like getting all the secret weapons before actually fighting the final boss, but it is so time consuming I've always leave there. And at least FF4 I've got stuck on a boss.

The remasters have a fast forward option which makes everything faster. You can even use auto battle with it too.

Crono Trigger uses an ATB system. First used in FF4. Hiroyuki Ito designed it. The only difference is presentation. Crono Trigger innovated on same screen battles and position based combat.

If Garnt gets bored on turn-based combat, he won't last playing the Trails series. That series takes a lot of commitment because you've got 12+ games to play to catch up.

Kind of curious if Garnt actually kept playing the Trails of games or if he dropped. A shame if he did dropped I must say. Last time we heard him talk about it he was close to finishing Trails in the sky SC I think.

I'm currently playing FF9 for the first time on a Playstation emulator and the best thing is that the emulator has a speed up/fast forward function. I can speed up battles, travelling and even loading screens with the press of a button. I honestly don't think I could cope if I had to play it normally. It's a great game though, I'm really enjoying it!

5:55 oh boy do we tell him. It's as convoluted as fate. Especially if you go into sephiroths first team. Derge of Cerberus. Original VII. Crisis core. Advent children. VII remake. Crisis core reunion and reberth.

I can understand the monotonous boredom of turn-based combat, if all you've played is Pokémon that is. Once you get into the better games of the genre from Persona to Xcom, and even the Tactics spinoffs for Final Fantasy, you will begin to see just how enjoyable charscters sitting still and waiting for you to give them moves can be.

Not everyone is gonna vibe with how FF7 unfolds its story but calling the characters bland is wild to me. Cloud and Tifa are easily amongst the most complex characters in the game but you have to unfold that through the narrative. The way FF7 unveils its story is genuinely masterful. I can understand the desire for a story that hits you fast (especially in the age of steaming where most shows just release a whole season you can binge), but I personally think people would enjoy stories more if they were told in a more digestible manner. That could also just be my nostalgia for the late 90s/early 2000s talking though.

I don't know if I'm the only one, but I never finish a game either unless it's AMAZING. I always stop at the last dungeon, like literally before fighting the boss, I just stop. I was like that with FF7, FF6, ALL of Tales games except Eternia and Graces. Only exception are the Persona series and some FF games like FFX, which is still my favorite FF

the reason why FF7 is my favorite FF is because it's the first FF that i played since it was the first one that got released in europe... if you ignore final fantasy mysthic quest but even then that game was called mystic quest legend in europe... so it's not even connected to the name here

I can relate. Imagine trying to get a friend into a series and telling them it gets good 1 or 2 seasons worth of hours in. Until then, you're getting fed crumbs of lore, loose backstories, and other uninteresting side stories, some of which makes no sense because you don't have the full picture. I remember jumping into the world of FF13 and having no idea what a l'cie actually was for 70% of the game.

The problem with ff7 remake is that it only covers the first 5 or 6 hours of OG, and its drawn out to 20 od hours, and it was only once you got out of midgar where the characters started to see some development. So i undersatnd the sentiment of "when do they get interesting?" For the remake. Because they really dont and thats what im hoping ff7 rebirth does for all of the characters.

So i can say this about ff7 that i dont think will translate well to the remake until all 3 parts are released. FF7 is a mystery story above all else, and the characters become more into their own as that mystery is unraveled. So if you dont like the characters in part 1 alot of it due to alot of information about them is purposely being held back because of the msystery. Then it could come off as them being more just slughtly above bland to some. While i understand there is no way to remake FF7 on a large scale in a sungle devolpement cycle. The multi part release is honesty a big drag on what makes the story, and the characters great. Especially since in some ways the remake is technically a sequel. But thats more spoilers i wont go into.

Just gotta say that in-game encyclopedias are one of my guilty pleasures. I totally understand the idea of the world being more interesting than the story being told. I think games shouldn't rely too heavily on in-game "wikis," but overall, it definitely helps me feel more immersed as well. It's not necessary, and can be done in different ways like side quests, flavor text on items, etc., but generally I think a game should at least have some kind of extra world-building for the people that actually want to know about the history of the world outside of the story's context.

I am with Garnt with reading lore and watching videos. I find fictional worlds fascinating especially when these worlds are built properly.

Garnt NAILED it. Cloud has the personality and charisma of a fucking rock. Also I disagree with Joey. I started the FF7 remake dlc and Yuffie is actually so annoying to me that I can't get myself to finish it. I do see the appeal of Tifa though. She's not only best girl personality wise, aesthetically she's also levels of WOW.

Turn based combat is fine for me, probably cause im used to it. But the RPG combat where you stand and wait for the bar to fill so you can do an action? It bothers me. I dunno, I just feel like a sitting duck, and it kinda puts me off. Most likely cause im just not used to combat like that.

The talk of How Long to Beat and how most JRPGs are actually reasonable is so refreshing cos most of the discussion for JRPG game lengths has been dominated by the type of ppl who spent 100 hours breading chocobos or going around the sphere grid on FF X five different times with every character until all their stats were at max. It stops new ppl getting into genre cos they get intimidated when mega fans are like “I spent 300 hours on FFX!” when you don't have to do all that ever.

I don't mind reading in games but I was born in 84 so we NEEDED to read if we wanted to even know where to go, let alone what is going on.

honestly, i get it,i have several turn based games on my switch that i delete and download on and off, it can get slow and tedious, i love ruined king, xcom 2 etc, but hand me a rougelite or first or third person shooter to keep me playing, halo,gears of war,borderlands 3, doom,shadow warriors,hades,curse of the dead gods, dreamscaper can keep me going for a long time. my two hyper casual just boot it up games are currently warriors orochi 4 and vampire survivors. turn based takes a certain mood for me i guess.

FFXVI sidequests pick up much better later. Early sidequests àre filler but eventually they turn into their own little mini arcs. Some of which are really solid.

Coming here with a well actually but I can't hold my tongue. Chrono Trigger was not the first game with a real time~ish battle system. If we talk about Active Battle System specifically that honor would go to Final Fantasy 4 which was released 4 years before chrono trigger. Not even talking about ATB we got Secret of Mana which was released 2 years before Chrono Trigger or Secret of Mana 2 which released the same year as Chrono Trigger. I also want to shout out the Terranigma and Tales of Phantasia which are not as talked about and both released the same year as Chrono Trigger and both had very impressive battle systems. If I were to describe what sets Chrono Trigger apart from other SNES era JRPGS. I would say that that game is the final love letter to the JRPG SNES era and that it builds on everything that came before it. At this point the Playstation has already been released. For some reason Chrono Trigger broke trough and saw success where tons of other late era SNES games were forgotten. As for things that make it unique when it comes to the battle system I would point to. * No screen transitions for combat. This is a bigger deal then it sounds like. The random encounters never feels like filler when they are actually out there on the map. * Combo Techs. that is special attacks that involves multiple party members. It took until Final fantasy 9 until we saw that mechanic in a game again. Then of course the theme of the game is very unique. And the game truly looks and sounds amazing. Truly a wonderful game.

8 is the only FF that does that confusing shit with the menus. Every other one for the most part is very straight forward

What you do is you play the first FF game and slog your way through it to see what makes the other games so great. If you can force yourself through NES turn based combat, you're really up to the task of finishing any turn-based RPG.
