I think the general idea of respect is what does it. Ricky is supposed to present this old school mentality, and respect has always been an old school idea.

"Every day here is the Super Bowl" did it too. You can't just put in some effort here or there and then get carried by it, you get one life to live and you need to treat it like it's important. Every second counts, and it's never too late to figure that out.

Yeah, its such a simple statement, and still so hard for some people to define. More people need to hear that, and most of them need to be in an environment that can support them to that end. This is my favorite episode.

I also love this scene because it was such a kind conversation to have with Richie. The best manager I’ve had over the years was the one who took the time to give me feedback and engage, but I know that takes time / effort. Richie was given so much from everyone working at this restaurant. Just such a great ep, my fav of the season
@pabloc8808
@pabloc8808 10 месяцев назад
This conversation alone made him a better person. I've been in Richie's shoes in a somewhat similar situation, having someone flip my entire worldview like that, and it's like you said, it came from a place of love, genuinely trying to get me out of a ditch and turn me into a better person.

When I was 16 or 17 at this job. Was half-assing at work, my boss pulled me into another room and talked to me in such a professional manner about how there are things at work that we don't like doing but we gotta do it. The way she talked to me, it gave me perspective to just "suck it up buttercup" , one of the best work lessons I have had to this day.

Restaurants are a brutal business model. Profit margins are thin, its a high stress environment and everyone is on tilt 90% of the time. But when you have a place like this where everyone is bought in and committed, its an awesome atmosphere to be in.

Garrett takes a "step outside" moment, which can so easily be a mean-spirited tear down of someone's character, and instead checks in with Richie. Without really raising his voice, he states the facts as he sees them and just asks Richie to do the same for a minute and see what he sees. Sure, it's all bougie. But it creates memories and can be such a fulfilling place to work. It's about your attitude, and how you choose to see it. Being jaded doesn't make you smarter than everyone else, it just makes you miserable to be around.

Honestly, that’s a great way to manage an employee. He didn’t talk down to him or embarrass him or threaten him. No, rather, he opened his eyes to the mission at hand and, going one step further, brought himself down to Richie’s level by telling him that, at the end of the day, hierarchy aside, everyone at that restaurant is pursuing the same mission for the sole purpose of satisfying the guests. Basically, he wants respect as his boss, but he’s not trying to “dominate” him or be “above” him. They’re all there for the same reasons, and that’s passion. And if he doesn’t have that passion, he doesn’t need to be there.

Respect yourself by doing the best job you can.

His boss has literally drank the coolaid and is happy about it cause it gives him false meaning in a business setting. It's literally just capitalist propaganda. What's more he guilt trips him into believing that he doesn't respect himself if he doesn't live up to unfeeling business standards i.e manipulates his subordinate to work harder so his own job is easier.
