These two had chemistry together. Jerry , very clever, philosophical, and emotionally controlled. Gary, all heart and sentiment. I could watch them sit on benches all day and riff off each other.
Jerry seems more cynical than philosophical. Having worked with the best character actors of his era (their having made him multi-miliions), why on earth would he boast of a hostility toward actors and their craft?
@@hd-xc2lz because he feels actors have stolen thunder from his kind (comedians). He was crystal clear: he said his bellyache is with our culture , not with the actors themselves. Of course he’ll complain society doesn’t put comics on the same pedestal as actors- he’s a comic. Sour grapes!
Not quite. At 7:00, Jerry recognizes something about what Garry was doing at put his finger right on it, then much later, added cars, and then, distilled it to coffee. Jerry recognizes tiny kernels when they're good, and then makes them into something that will grow huge... Larry with _Seinfeld,_ and Garry with _CCGC._ I think Jerry even credits Garry at some symposium, or something.
Did Jerry say anything about how the tv series IT'S GARRY SHANDLING'S SHOW was a sitcom starring a stand up comedian playing himself with his real name and occupation, and the show was about his life and he had a big-haired brunette platonic woman friend who would stop by, etc.?
Garry Shandling was the most underrated comedian! His talent was immeasurable. The Larry Sanders Show was the best show on TV! Incredibly funny. I love Garry
You could not be more wrong! Go watch "The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling". They don't make 4-hr docs on underrated comics. Garry was recognized as a genius (a troubled one, albeit) by the public, but even more so by his peers.
I loved his bit that his Mother wanted him to get married...so he doesn't die alone. Garry... So how is it better?... I'm dying and oh yeah, I'm with her. 😂😂😂
Now this makes the Comedians In Cars bit about Matthew McConaughey selling Lincolns even funnier - Garry was still giving Jerry grief for the lost jacket.
I miss Gary SO MUCH HE WAS SUCH A JOY TO LISTEN TO. DIFFERENT. HILARIOUS. ITS GARY SHANDLING SHOW WAS ONE OF MY VERY FAVORITES FROM EPISODE 1 I NEVER MISSED AN EPISODE AND WAS A HUGE FAN EVER SINCE‼️ 📺 GARY NEVER FAILED TO MAKE ME 😂 LAUGH‼️💋🥰❤️🙏😇😘 IN ADDITION THAT EPISODE OF GARY ON COMEDIANS IN 🚙 CARS GETTING COFFEE ☕️☕️ WARMED MY HEART AND SOUL. THE WAY THEY EXPRESSED THEIR APPRECIATION AND LOVE FOR EACHOTHER AS REAL FRIENDS WAS A REAL GIFT TO EACHOTHER AND THE FANS‼️ THANK YOU 🎭 BOTH‼️❤️ 🙌 👏👏👏👏👏😭
I love how Shandling can really crack up Jerry Seinfeld! Probably one of the only people who could. These two were almost equals but I’d give the edge to Gary.
Neal Brennan said in a Comedians in Cars episode that he only watched like 7 episodes of Seinfeld and had this great line that "Every time I turned on Seinfeld, you guys were worried about a jacket!" - I found it incredibly accurate (love Seinfeld), but now I can see where Neal could probably got the idea. :)
hilarious, "there's a good little chunk". i'd kill to be that audience on the next bench. i love these types of conversations, garry always pushing boundaries. before comedians in cars.
Wow, Jerry's take at the very end on the rise and fall of a show is pretty damn brilliant. But it totally makes sense why the majority of shows considered good DO in fact cross the line, and end up being bad before the last episode. The majority see $ as the top priority, and clearly Jerry/Larry are rare breeds who see the product as the top and only priority.
I love when Jerry talks about the "Monster" of TV or Showbiz... how it always wins and to get out on top.... he has some deep fears there or something..... Jerry mentions it with Kevin Hart on his coffee show bout LA but love to hear a deeper convo from him about it
this is the way everything works. Ask Michael Jordan or Madonna. The other side of the coin is Lou Gehrig, Roberto Clemente, Len Bias, Kurt Kobain, Hendrtix, Mac Miller. Only the good (or great) die young. I was aware of this concept before I was 10 years old. My dad died when I was a baby, so I never knew him. I've never heard anything bad said about him ever. Even now. Of course he was a flawed human, just like everyone else.
"Whenever somebody gets sick I always think 'this is the big one' " Amazing footage, Jerry is legitimately bothered like the Yenta he is and Garry is just busting his balls
Seinfeld is very cavalier here about actors. The other three (and the rest) on his TV show made him famous and mega rich. Is everyone else inferior because they didn't write the script ? Without the hugely successful show and the MASSIVE input from Larry David, Jerry Seinfeld would not be a world famous name.
Seinfeld chose Larry to work with him, after NBC chose him for the pilot. He spotted the rich vein of talent that jet propelled him to mega stardom. Same with picking the actors with Larry. His comedy skits are lame. His incisive use of words is his talent.
@@WARTV-dn5fk It is possible it cut both ways. the show barely survived the first 6 episodes ratings and the first season's. the writing and the performances both put it over. One mis-casting of the original 4 might have ruined the chemistry. Like Jerry's original casting of his buddy, whatsisname. it wouldn't have worked. I can't imagine him, or any actor other than jason Alexander doing that role. or Michael Richards. Or Dreyfuss. Those "other 3" are simply awesome comic actors. You can't really know if your assertion is correct.
Well stated. Though I've long considered a lot of his stand up material great, I've also thought he was a bit of an ungrateful jerk. However, to be fair, I've no idea what it's like to be Jerry Seinfeld. I imagine people who reach mega success must become either bored with their lives or trapped by their own success. I can't imagine what it would be like to be so wealthy and famous that almost nothing is out of reach. While that could be a blessing, I see it more as a curse. I wouldn't trade places.
10:05 reference/explanation of the dichotomy of vocation…it can be both a well of opportunity to express oneself in a meaningful way, and a way to heal oneself…explicated in the funniest way possible 😂
"The good universe" is a phrase I've remembered ever since and it really does apply to the best TV shows. There's shows with good writing and acting but only a select few do you REALLY enjoy spending time in the world of a TV show. Game of Thrones, Mad Men, Succession, GLOW, Breaking Bad, The Wire and a few others come to mind.
My mother worked as a waitress at that Soup Berg when she moved to NY from NJ in the 60's. I think it's a burrito restaurant now. I loved this bit more than the cars and coffee show.
Jerry " You can order anything you want " Garry " but I ate earlier so I'm just having soup " Jerry " the soup counts. This is the meal. " Garry " Soup is not a meal Jerry "
The answers to their questions lie within personality type theory. Garry was an INTP type and Jerry is an INTJ. Very similar types, but with some significant differences. In particular, INTPs have Extroverted Feeling (Fe) in their fourth slot, meaning they are trying to get good at it whereas INTJs have it in their seventh slot of the stack meaning they don't use it well and have little interest in it, always preferring Te (Extroverted Thinking). The Fe cognitive function is about reading others' emotions and being able to effectively communicate your own. Hence Garry's interest in acting and the ability to be a good actor and Jerry's simultaneous lack of interest in it. Also, F functions are traditionally thought to be and seem to be more found in women while T functions are more found in men. That's why at times it seems like a male-female conversation, as they allude, with Jerry as the guy.
Jews in Jackets to Men in Jackets to comedians in Jackets to Comedians in Cars. Gary might have been psychic in a way because that last one was the big one...
After watching so many of Seinfeld's appearances on talk shows, interviews, his Comedians in Cars thing, I've concluded he has real problems with being himself and being truly genuine with others. The facade never comes down, and he remains overtly distant and distracted throughout.
in an alternate universe they have on the opposite attire and Jerry is pronounced Gary and Gary is pronounced Jerry and Gary is had a hit show called Shandling
Just recently got acquainted with Garry. Pure genius. Any idea if he and Larry David ever crossed paths or worked together? It seems as if they must’ve given how many close connections Jerry and Garry have. I just haven’t stumbled upon anything that suggests they did.
