I can't get over how well Garry handled this. the bit where he tells Howard that he told he three times how he feels...so smart and sensitive. he even brings howard to be honest when he admits he doesn't know how the interview is going. so comfortable in his won skin, unlike howard here.
YES! That show at times was just perfect. Some of the little details were outstanding . His co-stars said he was very generous (unlike Larry. .. do you remember the one when the new writer was telling a joke and Larry cut her off at the punchline "coz "only Larry says the punchlines" ... even in the office) with his writing and acting
If I didn't miss Gary so much I would have bailed about one minute in. don't get me wrong Stern has learned over time to do a great interview but this but OMG
Howard Stern is the worst...had a skill, but such a lack of character of depravity...his verbal abuse of Erin Moran on his TV show was unforgivable! Shame is good when it allows us to find boundaries, without, we have Howard Stern.
I dont think stern took anything he did on "E" seriously, he seemed to make fun of the fact he was on "E", he has to make it all seem like one big joke (I think, Assuming hes that calculated which is assume he is)
“I’ll tell you when m allowed to participate” perfect answer, Gary so brave going on Stern, he knew it would be like this, but he did it anyways even though Stern was being a complete jaggoff the whole time. Stern is overly RUDE, terrible interviewer, terrible host at least during this year!
Thanks so much for this blast from the past! Garry Shandling the Zen master meets Howard Stern the agent of chaos. This was hilarious and I thought they both came across well, or more accurately, I think they both got taken down a peg or two. Garry struggled with some uncomfortable observations made by Howard, but overall Garry made it perfectly clear how much of a buffoon Howard is.
Shandling has critical success instead of ratings because he was a true original who made truly original, innovative content that wasn’t dumbed down for average sitcom fans. Your favorite comedy show has copied something from one of Garry’s two shows.
@@mistercut8331 You should read more. He got her blacklisted. Just think if you lost your job, and your employer actively saw to it that you couldn't get another job. Think of the stress that must have been. So please, a little empathy. Peace and love.
NO IDEA how Howard Stern became so big...He is absolutely TERRIBLE...Especially here early in his career...He was so visually NERVOUS and just AWFUL period
+Mike Rossi Thank you so much for uploading these gems and making sure they’re not lost to history. Absurd to me that there’s no archive of the E or HTVOD shows.
Although this complete segment was quite annoying, Howard Stern was dead right about Garry and marriage, Garry and fame and pretty, attractive women, Garry being a handsome man yes/ no, and Garry not speaking his mind about other talkshowhost just for not being offensive towards possible subjects, and yes Howard is in this episode of his career a very annoying man towards his guest by using his shotgun type of interviewing stylo. On the other hand: Garry held his ground and posture and was able to be himself and therefor funny, because that is both Garry's power as it's his weakness, how his mind lets his mouth form words and sentences that sound funny. Garry cannot be anything else than what he is, and that is a natural funny guy, whether he try's to be or not, he always is. Kind of a curse, if you'ld ask me. I always smile seeing him.
Amanda Huginkiss Jerry is funny. Jerry is the guy watching his crazy friends and laughing at them on the inside. That’s why Seinfeld works so well. Without the observer, we’d be laughing alone. But yes, Gary was so talented.
Amanda Huginkiss his stand up on the show isn’t very funny and he had some stand up that is ok and he’s also had some pretty good stand up. Not stellar but legit funny. His stand up is pretty dry humor and more along lines of observational humor that lands quite often. I also had some of the same thoughts as you until I watched and listened to more of his stuff.
this video just confirms that there are personalities that get into the spotlight because they are desperately seeking validation - and cannot get enough. stern turns an interview into an exercise in instant gratification/approval and only gets to gary in ways that circle back to further validation. gary was actually gracious in turning this approval quest into something entertaining, and he did it with enough gravitas to let the audience know this was an uncomfortable experience. given that gary was a pretty self-concerned individual, that's saying something.
Man, Stern has come a long way as an interviewer. This was brutal to watch. Garry was trying to have a funny, witty chat but Stern was in full-blown shock jock mode and kept going on and on like some coked-up 1980s Morning Zoo hack. And like most Stern interviews from this era, he had the volume up *way* too high. He's screaming in Garry's face like he's talking up the ramp on a Zeppelin record.
Something about Garry's sarcasm is so much more hard-hitting and incisive compared to any other comic. And he can be more likeable while doing it. This guy will never get his due at what a force he was. Been watching him since we used to trade tapes of "It's Garry Shandling's Show", back in HS in the 1980's.
Love it. Howard is so Howard and Gary is Gary. Two extremely different approaches to the world, and comedy and neither willing to be any other way. NOBODY is interesting these days. Craig Ferguson was the last person to be interesting or make anything risky or uncomfortable.
That is easily the worst interview Howard stern ever gave in my life. I’ve never seen him so uncomfortable and out of control. There has to be a really good story behind this failure.
Stern comes off as a jerk, but that is his act. He wants to shock and agitate people. That is what he does. If you think it's any more than that, the joke is on you.
I was a big fan of Stern in the mid-90's to early 2000's. That was his peak IMO. This early work is horrendous though, and his modern day PC BS (on Sirius) is unlistenable. It's too bad Gary had to endure this nonsense. Gary's work on "It's Gary Shandling's Show" and "Larry Sanders" was absolutely brilliant. Gary will be forever remembered as a visionary... and this interview is beneath him.
I completely disagree. Stern is the best he's ever been. The man has grown up and become a more refined person. He's stopped talking about tits, vaginas, and his mother's anal sex habits all the time and that's made for better radio. The change in his schtick is a welcome one.
This shows each of them to be comedy legends. Garry is clearly very intelligent and quick to, although his usual delivery style doesn't necessarily convey it.
This just isn't in Howard's wheelhouse. He needs much more time to do a show. He's trying to do too much and is a mess. Granted, it's the first episode but I don't think he ever became comfortable with the format. That explains why it didn't last and was largely forgotten.
Howard is so insecure here. He can’t give a guess more than a few seconds to respond before he interrupts. He’s a little better these days…but not much.
Damn it's crazy how green Howard was here as a legitimate interviewer. Almost 30 years later and he's arguably the best interviewer ever. Here he doesn't let his guests ever really settle in so they don't open up. Nowadays he has his guests so comfortable they forget they're being listened to by millions of people so they don't hold anything back
I enjoyed Howard's silliness, riffing about the new set and clothes. It was not really him at his best but he was bringing what he could! Both he and Garry can be so meta.
