Best example I got of this was an IOU I had with an ex-friend. I had written what they owed and told them that the grocery money I gave them had to be returned in cash. They erased the IOU and disappeared. I didn’t know where they were, so I rewrote the IOU as it wasn’t paid off then left for the scheduled movie date with my boyfriend. Ex-friend texted me how I am a horrible friend and person, to the point that my boyfriend had to get involved. Thankfully we were alone in that theater, but it really soured the date for us. Then the ex-friend told me that I did agree to be gifted with salad packets for the $100 I gave them for the IOU in grocery money. I was 6 months pregnant at the time and didn’t have a job, and I did loose my cool. Ex-friend used that moment to tell my boyfriend how they are the victim and I just want to steal my ex-friend’s money. Still short $400 (rent and groceries) but my baby and I don’t have that toxicity to deal with no more.

I partially agree. It's good the word is getting spread if it's being understood and used correctly. But some people don't fully understand it and use it incorrectly, which endangers people who are being gaslighted in relationships all the time. My friend uses it incorrectly and essentially says if you're messing around and he's getting triggered, that's gaslighting, which is not true. I was gaslit by my mum as a child all the time that my reality when I grew up was warped, and what I thought was "normal" was not. Been 10 years and I'm still in therapy working on it.

Sorry you had to deal with that. Some people literally just want to tear good things down. Silence can be deadly, and the best reaction (if you deem appropriate) can sometimes be no reaction & slowly distancing yourself from them.

what's true for this can also be their upbringing. If they feel comfortable in chaos because that's home for them. They'll continue to seek out fucked up situations or worse gaslight to create the chaos they so badly crave to feel like its actually love. Because the love they've grown to know, and the only version of love they've cultivated for themselves, is the love that was given to them as a kid.

An intentional gaslighter has the very specific goal of altering your perception. If you put up a wall every time they lie, they physically do not have access to your perception. Not to mention shunning is very upsetting to humans, who are social creatures. So you're effectively punishing them for bad behavior at the same time. "You lie to me, you get no interaction with me" There's zero purpose in trying to reason with one. You can literally slam down piles of video evidence, and they will STILL find a way to rationalize their way out of it in their own minds. It will only serve to ruin your own mental state. The only option is total rejection
