Gay Family Values: My Suicide Story

This was a very hard video for me to make. I have wanted to tell others
the story of my attempt at suicide for a very long time. When I was
seventeen I was a very unhappy teenager in a family that cared more
about how we looked to the world then how we lived as a family. I was
struggling with my homosexuality. At seventeen I threw myself off a
bridge here in sonoma county. I lived that day and have never looked
back. If you are a young person and you are considering suicide there
is help. Please reach out to your friends and family or call one of the
following help lines: 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK or 1-866-4-U-TREVOR or Send us an
email we are always here to talk. Love the Leffews
Our friend Sean Chappin has started a petition to get us on LOGO lets give him a hand www.petitiononl...
The song in this video was written By my friend Ryan Lill

I have been closeted for most of my teenage years. I've often contemplated of suicide and reenacted them in my head: Cutting my wrists, overdosing on pills dying slowly. It was an emotionally trying period in my life. When I got to college and came out, people started accepting me and it indeed got better. I'm glad you are still alive and kicking. You have so many blessings in your life now, namely: Bryan and the kids. I wish you all the best.

Jay, idk if you'll see this, but this video, and a lot of your other videos, kept me alive back in high school (about when you first posted it). Thank you. Bryan too.

Thank you so much for sharing your story and for your channel. I came out (bisexual) this past semester at college to myself after struggling with it since middle school. I spent some time in the hospital a year earlier after suicide attempt due to mental illness, school & being in the closet. I'm much happier with myself now that I accepted who I am even if my family doesn't know about it and they ever will. I'm so glad I wasn't successful with it because I would never be where I am otherwise. I'm so happy that you overcome it and lived to realize the family of your dreams. I love your family and channel.

Jay, this was the most inspiring, poignant, and arguably the most important video you've done. Thank you so much for what was so obviously an extremely difficult visit to a critical time and place in your life. Your videos need to be seen by every young person who's feeling lost and without hope for anything better in life.

i was very touched that you made this video, that you wanted to do something to help reach out and raise awareness for those who might be hurting out there, and for us to really understand each other better. i was also really touched when i heard bryan encouraging you along the way. it was definitely not an easy video to make, but i'm glad you did. happy birthday by the way! :D

This brought tears to my eyes, people ask me why I think my teenage years are so hard, but they dont realize who I am, I am seventeen years old. I would just like to take the time and thank both of you, Bryan And jay for making these videos. They are really helpful and inspiring. Hopefully soon I can start making videos to try and help other people. - Bub

This is the most incredible video... I'm very moved by your honesty and your courage to tell the world your story. It was a miracle and a sign that you woke up after almost drowning. You're a wonderful, compassionate, caring, amazing person, husband and father. I believe you will change a lot of minds, lighten many hearts and save many lives with these videos, especially this one. Much love to you and your beautiful family!

This was an amazing video. Perhaps 1 of the most powerful RU-vid videos I've watched. I initially got started watching the depfox videos because of Bryan's coming out story, but after learning about you and getting to know you, I have so much respect and admiration for you both. It's so sad and tragic to think you were driven to that much despair. And I know there are many others out there who are. I'm glad you lived and found happiness. The world is so blessed to have you in it!

I just cried seeing this video. It was sincere and honest. It needs courage to talk about that and you have it. You guys are amazing... thanks for sharing this.

Just knowing that although life seems so hard now, doesn't mean it always will be your living proof of that, watching you and your family I feel hopeful. Sometimes when you hide who you are for so long you become so closed to the idea of love you feel so unworthy of receiving any. Its so easy to feel pointless but hearing you talk of the pain makes me want to no longer hide, What You and Bryan and Selena and Daniel have given me is the hope I really had thought died within me. Thank You so much.

Thank you for making this video, but it was hard to watch. It reminded of my own feelings of alienation, depression, and self-loathing about 10 years ago. I remember thinking how much of a coward I was because I couldn't get myself to jump. But for whatever reason I didn't, and I started rebuilding my life. It's hard to think about sometimes, but it's inspiring to see what you've done with your life after having a similar experience.

@depfox Jay, Thank you for making this video. I am so pleased to see you are among us. It both shocks and revolts me that this still occures today. This was very hard to watch, because it was so heart felt. I can't tell you how important it was for me to see this Jay, I sometimes feel like I have ruined my life now 24, everything has gone wrong and being Gay is always the cause. I am proud of who I am but I am so hurt by people who I wish could love me and either won't or didn't, then there are the heartbreaks that don't seem to end and all of it effects everything else to the point I don't have the courage or energy to live. But I will

Thank goodness you lived that day!! I find your videos inspirational! I am sure you have helped many people who felt the way you did see a light at the end of the tunnel. It cuts my heart to hear about those young people who took their lives because of the fear and pain other people inflicted upon them for being gay. They were beautiful young people with so much to give and receive in life. It is very uplifting to see what you have made of your life in spite of other peoples negativity and hate

This is such a good video, not only becoz it was so honest and helpful to so many people, but also the support that came from behind the camera was so heartfelt and genuine. I sometimes despair at the shallow videos on here with gay couples, but this one is proof that gay r/ships can be happy, supportive and genuine. Can I ask how long you've been together? Just wondered. Love from Stockport, England.

Jay, let me just say how strong and brave you are. This is something some people never have the strength to say or even admit to themselves and you do it for the sake of others out there who may be going through the same thing. That to me makes you a true man, and a true hero to the gay community. Something as small as a youtube video can make such a difference in young gay people's lives and change their entire future. Thank you for telling your story Jay. Im so glad you made it. The world will never know how many wonderful people have been lost to suicide because the world made them feel ugly and unwanted. They lived lives of intolerable loneliness and torment. I am straight but I know that loneliness and I have found that by reaching out for help, for me it was a professional therapist, you can learn to accept and love who you are. I liked that definition of homophobia: Insecurity about being heterosexual.

Jay -- What ultimately got you through the depression? Because you survived you thought there was a reason to go on? Did you find someone to confide in? Did you call someone? I can't believe how similar my life was compared to your story. I was 17, I had a girlfriend (forcing myself to be straight) she also got pregnant and went and got an abortion without even telling me. It still hurts a lot to think about it. I couldn't tell anyone I was gay, especially my family. I too jumped off the highest bridge with huge rocks in the water, all I can remember is looking up at a light in the hospital.

Ever since then I totally turned my life around and I am finally proud to say I'm gay even in front of my whole family. Thank you so much for making this video, it really helped knowing I wasn't a lone. & Happy Birthday :)

Thank you for your heartfelt story.I am glad you lived to tell it and to show the world that you and your husband and family are just as "normal" "deserving" "worthy" as any heterosexual family.I started watching your videos because I am a fan of adoption.I continued watching because I enjoy your family.

i dont know if i said this already but i completely understand jay's anger at still being alive and the feeling of 'i couldnt even do that right!' i live in the desert and there arent that many means of quick "natural" death here which is good because i had to choose something else. that is part of the reason i myself am still here. i still have the stuff i bought to die in my car, my car needs cleaned pretty desperately-no worries now.

i understand how you feel. i nearly did suicide on myself because coming out wasn't easy. even if my coming out is still painful up to now. i'm just thankful i have lived long enough to find love. i'm really thankful that my boyfriend came into my life and he is my world and life now. the reason why i wanna stay alive.
