"How is it that the Jesus movement has transformed into the sex police?" At the United Methodist Church's global convention in Tampa, Florida, delegates from around the world gather for a heated and emotional debate on the future of their church and its official policy towards homosexuality. "I think we will hear a resounding shoutback saying we can't do that," says Amory Peck, who is just one of more than 1500 United Methodist pastors who have pledged to perform same-sex weddings. Conservative Methodists remain vehemently opposed, fearing that such changes fundamentally undermine the Christian doctrine. "If the church encourages this, it would be the death of the church itself", says Marie-Louise Kpokpo, a conservative delegate from the Ivory Coast.

I'm not Christian but that woman literally said "a church with people of different faith backgrounds". It's a church, that's a place for Christians. If you want to meet with other religions, great but that's not a church. That's a social club.

I think "faith backgrounds" refers to where they have came from rather than what they are now e.g. a Presbyterian who has converted to Methodism or a Muslim who converted to Christianity

The church is made up of the believers and disciples of Christ. The Bible, especially in Acts, describes how the church grew and multiplied. Did it mean your body grew and multiplied? I'm a gay Christian. I'm still attracted to men but attraction alone is not sin. This is called temptation, acting on it either in my mind (as a fantasy) or physically is a sin. Christ forgave our sins and died to save us from their effects. I don't think ignoring that and continuing my lifestyle would honor Christ's death. I don't like to bash atheists because all atheists are different from one another. I was once one. I thought if God was real then he hated me for making me gay and having his servants constantly disparage me. The truth is in Corinthians, Paul says that it's a very good thing to marry but an even better one to dedicate your life to serving Christ, not a spouse. So I chose Christ, he has become more of a desire in my heart than easy sex or a 60 year marriage. To all of those saying that Jesus would've accepted gay marriage, I'm sorry but you're mistaken. Jesus would've accepted the 'homosexual' not the 'homosexual-ity.' John 7:53 8-11 speaks of a woman caught in adultery and the Pharisees were about to stone the woman for her sins, and Jesus stopped them and told the one who was without sin to cast the first stone. None were without sin and Jesus was the only one who could stone her. Instead, he told her to go and LEAVE YOUR LIFE OF SIN. Therefore, while Jesus loved her and accepted her, he did NOT accept her sin. I'm just telling you what the bible says about sin. If you want to argue that the bible says homosexuality is okay then fine, I'll listen to your argument. Don't try to say for one second that living a sinful life is okay however, Jesus clearly said it was NOT. 24:15 This couple has given in to temptation.

Bible says " wr are a holy nation" This mentality of " jesus is personal" is not biblical. Jesus had a community of desciples. By the time he went to heaven, he had 500 followers. It’s debatable, yea they did oppose this wicked movement to integrate SSM into their church, but that’s the least of their problems. It seems that half their clergy (staff in the church) seems to be composed of women, which is not their place according to scripture. And, women pastors. And if that was not enough, council that votes on doctrine. As if the Bible was not sufficient enough to to tell them what doctrine to have, now they have to have a council to decide what to believe. But yes, I guess they did stand their ground to oppose this wicked behavior.

It is very sad, though I can't help thinking they were used by the conservative leadership in the US to shut down the debate. I didn't care for the way the narrator kept saying 'the African delegates, the African delegates,' as though they were an undifferentiated mob. It is likely that the preponderance of their votes went against inclusion, but these delegates too deserved the kind of individual profiles and recognition that the US-based clergy received. The African delegates were cast as unyielding opponents here, but there's a long story behind the hostility of African churches towards LGBTQI+ people, and it involves bad faith from the US. When populations in sub-Saharan Africa were being decimated by AIDS, not only did the US government condition its financial aid on the purchase of drugs from American Big Pharma, preventing African states from sourcing cheap drugs from elsewhere, but American faith-based charities fanned out across the continent, spreading the message of abstinence, chastity, and hostility towards sex workers and LGBTQI+ people, portrayed as the vectors of HIV-AIDS. Even today, it is the evangelical wing of the church that sends most missionaries to Africa, and the evangelical church is conservative. It incentivises the politics of moral judgement and exclusion. I think of how much worse it must be for sexual minorities in African congregations.

From my time as a Christian since the early 80s I have seen a frightening path for a complete disregard for HIS Word. What is left if pre-marital sex is now ok, divorce for almost any reason is ok, near pornographic entertainment ok, entertainment where almost every commandment is broken in a 30 minute show is ok and now homosexuality now isn't a sin. This is a spiritual de-evolution. What is sin now? Jesus said if you follow me, the world will hate you. We have taken the teeth out of what sin is what we can identify as sin. We have allowed these sins to fester and remain and called it good which is a sign of God's wrath according to Isaiah.

Dear @Roland, I might add that the word "inspired" in the verse you quoted, is not an accurate translation of the Greek word, "theopneustos" (εόπνευστος), used in this verse. A more accurate and literal translation of this word would be, "God-breathed". Therefore, internally, the Scriptures claim to be "God-breathed". DZ

Is the Bible God's word? The Bible that we in the US read isn't the original Bible as it was written by its Greek authors. Its been translated. And translation is not an easy task. Its not a matter of matching words together like many religious scholars like to pretend it is. You must be able to thoroughly understand not just the literal text, but the person who wrote the words and the two *cultures* you are translating between. The passages that supposedly deal with homosexuality are all fraught with issues. The most glaring issue with the New Testament mentions are particularly curious. The Greeks had a word for homosexual relations. Yet the original authors didn't use that word. Recommend looking up "StopBibleAbuse", a website that breaks down in incredible detail the full meaning behind each passage dealing with LGBT issues.

They were polytheistic and had many practices such as infanticide that we would consider immoral today. Most Christians would consider the lack of biblical/church knowledge to be forgivable ignorance, And despite what many people will tell you all religion has a component of mystery. We are never truly certain about who or even what goes to heaven. So its possible that if they lived lives that were pleasing to God they could have been saved, but many would still be condemned because of sin. Sin would still exist in the eyes of God regardless of if we were aware of it or not. This is why we consider Gods decision to become man so he could teach and die for us to be the most loving act of all time. Most if not all denominations consider evangelical work to be super important because they believe that most people on the earth need to be saved from their sins. I hope this helps I'm coming from an Orthodox POV.

Jesus never said to love the sinner but hate the sin. He said to love the sinner, but hate your own sin. Look very carefully at the original Hebrew and Greek on those few verses that are supposed to refer to homosexuality. eg Gen 19 can just as a validly be translated as "All the people of Sodom...where are the people....? The fact that some people are born gay is now a medically proven fact. I was a Baptist Pastor and told I am not welcome to even attend the church. That hurt so much. I was married to my wife for over 51 years and cared for her with MS for 26 years. She has since passed. God has also created over 1500 animals gay. How could God make such a terrible mistake???? I STRONGLY support gay marriage.

Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. 28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done.
