They discuss the unraveling of global order, the failure of the IDF, the incompetence of the Netanyahu government, the goals of Hamas, the Saudi peace treaty, the right of Israel to exist, the status of Palestinian and Jewish refugees, victim and perpetrator narratives, compromise vs justice, the Palestinian citizens of Israel, lessons from WW2, the danger of focusing on the past, the perverse significance of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the double standards to which Israel is held, false analogies to European colonialism, the rise of antisemitism, the future of politics in Israel, America’s role in preserving global order, the war in Ukraine, and other topics.

Thank you for this episode. I think the paywall needs to be removed on this so the full contents can be shared as widely as possible. Yuval brings up some really key points at the end about the responsibilities of the intellectual elite in moments like this and how they are falling short, and reiterates the more balanced perspective that must be adopted for further catastrophes to be avoided. This message needs to be heard.

A topic like this is a good example of what needs to be heard. If you want to continue making a difference (you will either way) release then in full… I guarantee it will require people to think about what and why they believe what they say. @@haithemelzabri interesting -- where exactly in the podcast did you hear that? Harari dedicates the first 15 minutes of the podcast to calling out Netanyahu and the illegal behaviour of the extremists in his government...Harris & Harari provided pro-peace and anti-extremism perspectives that agreed for a need to remove Netanyahu & the populist extremists in his cabinet "who put his personal interests before the national interests", along with removing Hamas, in order for moderate Palestinian & Israeli voices to work together towards peace. Religious extremism (both messianic extremism and jihadi extremism) are spoken about in this podcast, which is different than righteous resistance, and neither voice on this podcast advocated for genocide, no matter how horrendous the realities of wars are. I don't know how you got to your conclusions when Harari - among other poignant insights - says: "If we want to have some chance of peace in the future, we have to disarm Hamas. Of course, simultaneously, we also have to give the Palestinians a different future to give them the possibility that they can see that if they choose a different path they could live dignified lives in their homeland...And this should be Israel's warning, I think, to go back to the Saudi peace treaty and to restart the peace process with the Palestinians..." "Now is the ground attack in the way it is conducted right now, is this the ideal way to disarm Hamas? I just don't know, that is beyond my expertise, but without some kind of military measures, obviously Hamas is not going to disarm voluntarily..." "From a broader perspective, in most ethnic conflicts around the world, both sides tend to be victims and perpetrators at the same time. This is a very simple and banal fact, that for some reason most people seem incapable of grasping...So many people seem to refuse this simple fact of history, and think in binary terms, that one side must be 100% evil and one side must be 100% pure and just, and we just need to pick a side and this of course links to these fantasies of perfect & absolute justice, which are - historically - always destructive."

32:45 - It's a point that always comes to mind, even though it's a kind of "whataboutism" argument. All my Israeli family members originated from Arab nations. They had no interest in leaving their home, which they had lived in for generations, but had no choice but to leave and retreat to Israel. And now they are called "occupiers." They're refugees, forced from their homes, and now they're living and supporting a country that let them in.

@tekannon7803
@tekannon7803 7 месяцев назад
The first thing I want to say to you, Sam Harris, and to you Yuval Noah Harari, is that I believe you have both made the world a better place. You both speak your minds and your thoughts come often resonate from your hearts and pass through your souls to us on many, many issues that perplex modern society. The second thing I want to offer is my condolences to Yuval and his family and friends who have lost loved ones, friends, and fellow Israelis on the 7 October attacks. To quote Roosevelt: a day that will go down in infamy and never fade from the conscience of Israelis and the Jewish people and the world community. If I may, here is my opinion on what has to be done to change some things in the region. Yuval has stated that the Arab nations refuse to accept Israel as a sovereign state and this must change. This shows to me that the Arab mindset is set in concrete and nothing good will come of continuing with this refusal to accept Israel's right to exist. Next: Gaza can and never will be trusted by Israeli's living on the border with Gaza or even deep into Israel and this is where I have an idea how to kill two dilemmas with two beautiful words: wildlife sanctuary. Yes; that's right: you hear me correctly. Gaza must be transformed from the blood-soaked battleground of warring factions and a population of people living in deplorable conditions to a nature reserve for saving endangered species of plant, animal and aquatic life. This could become the Galapagos of the middle east and bring in more tourists than the pyramids. Israelis, Egyptians, Palestinians and all neighboring states could put their differences behind them and work together to save the many, many species on the verge of extinction. Our progeny would echo heartfelt thanks to us for sending them a wildlife reserve with faun and fauna brought back from extinction. This is an example of what could be accomplished: there are only 6 black tigers known to exist, for example. We could save this species by allowing them to reproduce in a protected nature reserve! The key to this dream of mine of course comes with a caveat many will say is more like a noose: a proper homeland for the Palestinians must be the cherry on the cake and this is of course where the good ship I am sailing on runs aground. Because we are going to need to re-think and re-draw some boundaries and give up some land so that the Palestinians can all live proudly on enough land to house their entire population. To recap: an ecological buffer zone must be created by evacuating Palestinians from Gaza which has been called an open prison to their own country, a patch of land that no one can claim but them and Gaza must be transformed into an oasis of the middle east cum Galapagos that would allow the deep wounds to heal that both the Israelis and the Palestinians bear from a conflict whose root cause is basically a border dispute that can only be resolved by taking dramatic steps and perhaps even using harsh methods to achieve an everlasting peace in the region. Arabs will be willing to accept Israel as a sovereign state once they see their Palestinian brothers and sisters living on their own in peace. All Arab nations and Israelis must understand that the road to peace is by listening to each other as neighbors first and use nature reserves to be buffer zones on contested lands because no one will attack a wildlife sanctuary. This Gaza war must and can be resolved with words and logic and wisdom.

@@OtagesBringthemhome_NOWGGGGGGGGGGreat to hear from you. It's clearly the million-dollar question and once it has been answered, there will certainly be a change in the mindset of all concerned. What I see as the only solution is that all Palestinians must have their own stretch of land and that's where the greater Arab Community comes in. There is silence coming from the Arab nations around the Gaza war and no one is offering a helping hand. This is where the UN comes in why Guterres is missing the target completely by staying in the background. What should be is that all business in the UN takes a backseat to the Gaza war and that a Palestinian state is redrawn from existing boundaries. This sounds daft coming from where we stand today, but there has to be some pain before we make any gain. We need someone to open the discussion about carving out enough land for a proper country for these poor people who are living atrociously and inhumanely while others look on as if it were a circus show.

The complaint isn't that some people are more elite than others; it's in denying that they ever govern in accordance with their own self interests and priorities, or even suffer from myopias induced by the cliques with which they travel. The particular way that the elite is choosing to govern must also be a legitimate subject of potential criticism -- in a democracy. People are not simply obliged to pay the traditional deference accorded to nobles.

He might be right but I need to remind you that Arab governments don’t represent public opinion. Arab leaders are a bunch of authoritarians who are interested solely in staying in power. That is to wipe Israel off the map..."from the river to the sea". On top of that, it widely accepted that HAMAS is not representative of the Palestinians, right? So how can this attack be representative of an "occupied" population making a big move? It is a terrorist organization that committed a major terrorist attack to continue it pursuit of its doctrine, which is wiping Israel, and Jews off the face of the earth. Yuval called him a dictator lol. He’s unhinged. All he wanted was to limit the power of unelected judges who could strike down any law that democratically elected officials passed. He said it himself. Israel doesn’t have a constitution. In America, the Supreme Court looks to the constitution. Where do the Israeli judges look? Nowhere? They look in their own hearts and conscience, which is not how a judge is suppose to act. A judge looks at a situation and determines whether it violates the law as it is written. But if there is no law written they are able to act purely on their own judgement. They are unelected and shouldn’t have as much power as they do. Nobody elected them. And the system by which they are appointed is totally bizarre.

Given what Sam has said on this topic previously and his admittance here that he hasn’t been following Israeli politics closely, I hope the conversation between 13mins and 18mins here gives him some pause for thought where Yuval states that Netanyahu did not want the moderates to prevail in Gaza and preferred to keep Hamas in charge. He was baiting an attack like this to justify a response like we have seen since October 7th. I like Sam but he has focussed way too much on the religious motive behind the Hamas attack (though it certainly is an aspect of it) and not enough on Israel’s provocation. Given what we’ve seen since October 7th it’s hard to believe that Netanyahu completely dismissed the idea of a major Hamas attack being a net benefit to the Israel project.

I have been studying this for 20 years and the Palestinian “moderates” people are referring to are the PLO/PA who openly support the destruction of Israel and inciting/supporting terrorism. The only difference is the PA are more careful at hiding it to a western audience. If you read/speak Arabic you see that they are not really moderate. Just as an example they called for the mosques to read a Hadith about killing Jews shortly after the attack. Abbas is a disciple of Arafat who Netanyahu had direct negotiations with. He knows their intentions and it’s not for peace. They’ve used completely nonsense historical distortions like “there was no Jewish temple” or “Palestinians are in the Bible and have a 7000 year history in the Bible” to blow up peace talks. It’s all part of strategy to get more foreign aid and legitimacy without actually making peace. The PLO strategy, and you can find readings about this, is to destroy Israel but they are willing to play the long game.

You’re conflating two things. One: the drive behind Hamas and Jihadist Muslims who perpetrate events like Oct 7. And two: the Israeli Defence intelligence for preventing these events. The cause behind Oct 7 has nothing to do with Israeli foreign policy. Of course Israel has illegal occupations in the West Bank but that is not what drives Hamas no matter what all the champagne socialists will you have to believe. Fundamentally it is a religious zealotry mindset that causes this. Netanyahus government being a circus didn’t cause it, but perhaps allowed it to happen . Oct 7 might have been prevented with a better government but Hamas would still want to do what they did on Oct 7.

Nuance seems to be dead and, while I commend and admire your attempt almost towards the end of your comment, you failed at the final hurdle when you generalised "the Israel project", which may easily be construed as not recognizing the legitimacy of the existence of Israel. Maybe you didn't mean that - fine - I give you the benefit of the doubt, but many understandably won't (NB to negate the legitimacy of the state of Israel at this juncture in history - regardless of claims of either ancient or post-ww2 land rights - is to call for at best ethnic cleansing and at worst genocide). Having said that, fully with you more broadly RE your critique of the Netanyahu government and it's great to look at this side whilst simultaneously supporting the decisive eradication of totalitarian Islamist ideology. I, for one, hope to see moderate liberal democracy prevail all the way - peace, liberty, prosperity, and happiness for all, except for the authoritarians who seek to destroy secular humanism.

It’s a poorly framed question. Palestine isn’t a state. Really those people should have been allowed and encouraged to resettle in other countries after the wars like tens of millions of others have. And let’s also keep in mind that the ‘Palestinians’ have been offered a state seven times in history and THEY rejected those offers. They also ensure that no one in their territories sells anything to a Jew or even allows them in. Imagine if Israel did that to its Arab citizens. The question should be “Can the Palestinians get on with their lives? Or are they committed to endless conflict with Israel?”

@@infidelheretic923 Follow up question: Palestinians are people who exist, when you kill their family and take their land/ home and they are not a state as you mentioned they are occupied territory according to the UN (Israel controls it's water, power and mobility) How can they defend themselves then? Or lying on the ground for airstrikes and tanks their only choice available? The part about 'Palestinians' being offered a state seven times is Israeli propaganda which lacks context and historically inaccurate ( read the terms of those "offerings" and imagine Israel was in Palestine's shoes and maybe then we'll discuss that.

Francesca Albanese : "Under Int'l Law,Israel has the right to PROTECT itself,not to WAGE WAR (i.e. self-defense under art 51 UNCharter) agst the people it has kept under belligerent occupation since'67. Gaza IS "occupied" given Israel's effective control,regardless of Hamas' existence. ICJ (2004)"

The correct question is are the Palestinians civilised enough to deserve their own country

@@saulgood2366 Ofcourse they are. Actually by numbers of innocent civilian life loss , they lose much more than any country currently exists while still just hoping to live peacefully. What Israel endured in Oct the 7th , Palestinians endured for decades and still the lie that they would "kill all Jews" if they get the chance. Why is it hard to believe that Palestinians are human beings no different than you?

Very good and thanks to you both! As a liberal progressive what I’ve always struggled with is the apparently dominant current conservative view that if we/they try hard enough time and consequently change can be arrested if not reversed. I think even Edmund Burke was okay with just slowing down the rate of change😊😊

Change for change sake is inefficient and potentially very harmful.
