Great review! I just subscribed your channel! So concise, easy to understand review. Love that i didn't have to spend 10+ min for the same conclusion. Thank you! Btw, I currently own 50mm Summilux F1.4 asph, and I'm thinking this 50mm Noctilux F1.2 asph. Is it somewhat redundant? How are they different, and would you recommend it? Or which other "character lens" would you recommend? (I currently own 28mm Summicron and 50mm Summilux) Thank you!

Thank you Kevin for your kind words. Personally I would take a look at the voigtlander 50 1.5 heliar for a vintage character lens. I’ve done a review on it :)

Heard a lot about words like, legendary, classically unique look, dreamy background and on and on but when it comes to what really counts, or what no longer counts depending where you are coming from, which is the image it takes this lens is simply disappointing. I tried it a few months back and what impressed me the most was the handling. It was light and compact for its aperture size. The dimension somehow matches the M body almost perfectly with minimal intrusion into the viewfinder's FoV. The focus ring turned very smoothly, dreamly even if you'd like the word. But upon checking the images on my computer screen I saw heavy vignetting especially up until f2.8. Lateral chromatic aberrations on high contrast edges both in in-focus and out of focus areas. Very noticeable longitudinal chromatic aberration at the widest apertures. Poor corner sharpness until stopping the lens down to between f4-5.6 and poor central sharpness at the first widest two apertures. Bokeh rendering was pleasant but nothing to write home about if you already shoot with modern designed high-speed lenses. It may be valuable from a collectibility point of view but in optical performance terms, disappointing is an understatement more so considering the monumental price tag. At its price the Nikkor 58mm Noct f0.95 simply eats it for lunch in all aspects except for size and handling. And at anywhere from about 1/4 or 1/5 to 1/10 the price there are many other lenses that handily outperform it optically.

Jimmy, thanks for the comprehensive review! I wonder if the aperture ring in your copy is almost de-clicked? I just got my copy where at 1.2 it almost needs not much force to turn and I am wondering if I need to send it back to Leica.

yep, that's exactly how I feel about it. It's very different from any of the other Leica lenses in terms of damping.

If every 1.2 is as good as yourś i would trade my 1.0 immediately just for the size and weight. I am curious to see more Images from this new lens.

I think they should be quite consistent considering the day and age they are made 😝

Nice comparison, and just wondering will you try the Voigtlander 50mm APO? huge Voigtlander fan here, thanks Jimmy!

I will in the future. But actually I prefer the nokton ii 1.5, larger aperture and really good chromatic aberration control. I would rate it a bit higher than the lux asph except for its strong vignette. It’s tiny and for the size nothing can beat it.

Its a very good video because you would think the 1.1 would be a stronger performer but clearly the modern coatings and tweaking leica have made to the reissue gives it a clear edge over the mandler design.

Would you replace your f1 Noct with the f1.2 Noctilux remake seeing that it's mainly a better lens in your current video? Will there be circumstances where you'll use the f1 Noct instead of the f1.2 Noct? Have you tried the f0.95 Noct and compare it with the f1.2?
@JimmyCheng
@JimmyCheng 3 года назад
Hey Will, thanks for the comment. The thing is, the f1 is still more of a character lens when you need it to be, so I’ll prolly keep it. But that being said, the f1.2 is plenty characterful, sharp when you need it to be, and so much smaller. If I were to get a 50 today assuming I don’t have any, I’ll pick the 1.2 over the apo any day of the week.

@@JimmyCheng Thanks for your reply. Well the good thing is that there's plenty of options ... the sad thing is that this could lead to an emptier wallet. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.

Jimmy, you should try to compare these two lenses to the cheap 7Artisan 50mm f1.1 and Mitakon's 50mm f0.95, I'm sure this will be an interesting comparison. I did similar testing years ago where I compared the Leica 50mm f1.0, the Nikon Noct 58mm f1.2 and then the newest Mitakon 50mm f0.95 on the (then new Sony A7R body with various adaptors). To my surprise, the Mitakon being a new design (and probably better computer aided design and modern manufacturing technique/methods) was both sharper and stop down on all aperture when compared with the two older but expensive lenses. I tested the bokeh on all distances and find I can hardly tell much of a difference between them. I sold the Leica Noct 50mm f.1 version 4 immediately after my own test and I still own both the Mitakon for my Sony's and the Nikon because I like using the Nikon noct on older nikon film cameras. IMHO, most of the Leica lenses are simply way over priced for their over engineering and profiteering.

True, that's the problem when doing comparisons. People would probably kill me if I give them the results and honest opinions. On one hand, you have the market price clearly indicating that if you keep the Leica lenses, you would probably make loads of money after years, while the other brands just fade away. But from an optical stand point, Old lenses are just that, OLD LENSES. Haha.

@@JimmyCheng I can't live with myself if I'm not speaking my mind, I find these Chinese lenses are far better than I expected and they're super value for money. If I want a technically perfect lens, I will probably go for Sigma or Tamron, but lenses with personality and character, these new Chinese lenses are amazing.
@JimmyCheng
@JimmyCheng 2 года назад
@@DannyChau7 that's certainly true. Something like the new TTartisan 50 0.95 is by no means inferior to the Leica counterpart, if anything, it's got its own character :)

@@JimmyCheng I got the first gen Mitakon 50mm f0.95 for Sony and the latest M-mount 50mm f0.95 from the same company, simple amazing quality and great character/rendering, to me it's so much better than the Leica 50mm f1.0 noct I once owned. :)

Noctilux F1 E58 version 1 from 1978 is the best Noctilux ever created. Period. This new 1.2 doesn't have that magic. Also, if you use Noctilux you want to shoot the lens wide open.

Either lens is a waste of money unless one has to have one of the most expensive Leica lens on the market... and that I understand.
