I am as of yet uncertain regarding this hypothesis, however I would speculate that those of the masculine persuasion may be inclined towards a more formal style of speech, so as to appear more gifted in the realm of intellect.
Very biased study based simply on the fact that it looked only at Facebook. Men and women use different social media platforms for different things. Women on Facebook are much more likely to be mothers and wives. Women on Twitter are much more likely to be depressed and violent activists. Men on Facebook are far more likely to be gamers. Not just as a hobby but as an identity. They are also far more likely to be political autists (libertarians, communists, anarchists, etc) who are screaming about the government, the rich, etc etc. Women use Twitter and Tumblr (if that Even exists anymore) for those purposes. Looking at Twitter would produce a much different picture.
Interesting. This probably speaks much to the themes that motivate men vs. women to write and post. The positive-thinking, encouraging men seem to keep these thoughts more to themselves--or to other venues.
