In this video I talk about communication as a learnable skill, a goal-directed intentional activity that gets better with practice.

This video was very helpful, I struggle to communicate with people and it makes me really annoyed. Your video inspired me to start taking action and to improve my communication skills, thank you

Thank you. Thank you. This stopped my beating myself up again. I can continue to learn and practice to bring my communication skills to a similar level to my more natural talents. 😊😊

I would love suggestions on "small talk" phrases. As an INTP, I struggle with knowing what to say to a coworker as we pass in the hall, for example. I love serious conversations and talking about ideas. I don't particularly feel that I struggle with listening, empathizing, or difficult conversations. It's the easy ones that are hard! Ha!

It’s so good to have found your channel. I started a career in Sales this year 2021 and I love it but I need help with communication. Someone recommended Dale to me but I began to search and came across your channel.

Thank you! So helpful! Do you have a video about what to do when you are in a social event where you don't know that many people? I find it hard when I am in a room with many people. I don't know who to approach. Or another is, when I am talking to a person and I am not interested in the topic, how do I politely end the conversation?

It is definitely a skill and one that I needed to have in an environment with sick individuals where if one does not have communication skills the consequences would be very quickly felt. The brain likes patterns and unfortunately will end up as I call it the 'pingball' conversation. .. ''you're an asshole'' ''No, I am not you are the asshole.'' And this is most people's default especially when challenged - a reacton based on ego and little on empathy. I learnt to create a new default by being calm and just actively listening and from there I can choose to label or paraphrase or whatever but the default needs to be changed because if the default is not changed then everything else is just theory.

Your videos are so great. I am a therapist and counselor at an in-patient treatment facility and teach a Healthy Communication course and I use various videos, including yours. I have a question that I could use your guidance on. What would you suggest I tell my patients that are interacting with someone who does not have good communication skills. Meaning, they have learned how to communicate much more effectively but their partner, family member, or friend is not a good communicator?? How do you suggest they have courageous conversations with people who have not learned healthy communication skills?

Hi Christine. Thanks for your kind words. I'm glad you are finding them to be useful. This is a hard question. I think I'd recommend a very heavy dose of core empathic listening skills. Look for my video on "tactical empathy" or "active listening" or just use my whole empathy playlist. It's not going to be easy, but with a lot of paraphrasing, reflecting, and mirroring, the other person can generally be made to feel heard and understood, and almost all of us are easier to communicate with once we feel heard. I'd also check out my video about telling people what you don't mean. One big source of conflict and misunderstanding is when people misinterpret our intentions. Generally, my favorite books on this topic are "Difficult Conversations," "Crucial Conversations," and "Never Split the Difference". Also Alan Alda's book on communication "If I Understood You..." is great. All of these emphasize empathic listening in one way or another. Good luck and keep me posted. You can tell the people in your classes that I'm a friend of Bill W's.

I’m a big fan of Alex Lyon Communication Coach. I think he has some free and paid courses. And a free 6-video course on concise speaking.

I would say to be curious about the other person. Spend time learning about what has happened in each other’s lives since the last time you talked.
