Gene Autry was a true American cultural treasure. I was born in 1942 and have too many memories of him to mention. Thank you for this document of his extraordinary life. You are an American treasure yourself, Jerry. You are rightfully appreciated by so many. Thank you so much for the important work you do.

The love that he gave throughout his life is really heartwarming. He was a wonderful man and a great musician. Only if there were more people with a heart like his, this would be a better world. I have loved his music all of my life. I'm 82 years old and we always had good music in our house. Every weekend a group of people would meet at our house and sing and play there instruments. And us kids would dance . We were poor but in my mind we had the a lot of fun. More children need country music in their lives. Life would be better for them. Thank you Gene.

What a generous man Gene Autry was and always remembered his friends and took care of many of them down thru the years. I still enjoy hearing his recordings of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and all the other holiday songs he made popular. He could well be called the King of the Cowboys with all his generosity. I enjoyed his movies as a young farm girl. Was amazed to learn he had five stars on the Hollywood walk of farm. RIP GENE AUTRY.

I will always remember when I was 12 years old and Daddy took me to the old Ashton Theater on apple street in New Orléans. This was a first time Daddy had been to a real movie show which was a western video starring. Gene Autry. My daddy was so excited and talked about Gene Autry all the way. Home. I will always remember this outing that we both went and seen the shows together. Now, after my age now, at eighty years old, I will remember this until the good Lord calls me up to walk the Highways in heaven. I know Daddy is looking down and waiting for me to catch up and talk about our experience that wonderful day!

His personal life was between him and his wife. Yes,he had a drinking problem but so does million of other people in the world. Thats between him his wife and God! Why is his sin worst than yours? We all have sinned and have falling short of the glory of God. To God sin is sin. God will be the judge of Gene Autry. And I for one believe God forgave Gene for his weaknesses. Hes alot better than these so called movie stars and musicians today ,who could care less about right or wrong. I'll take A Gene Autry anyday over the garbage today.

Same here, Steve -- The Roy Rogers/Gene Autry Theater. They were fairly "old" movies at the time, so I always wondered what Gene looked like at the time I watched them. Got my chance to see him "live" when the announcers for the Saturday afternoon baseball game, Dizzy Dean and Pee Wee Reese, said they were going to have him "in the booth" for an interview, shortly after he had acquired the Angels. Imagine my disappointment when the picture went all snowy right before Gene came on. A problem in transmission, I suspect, 'cuz I could hear them, just no picture. Finally, it did clear up, right at the end of the interview, and I just caught a glimpse of Gene -- looking somewhat older and greyer than in the old movies -- but I was still one disappointed little cowpoke. LOL Gene and Roy, both, were always heroes of mine and still are.

At the age of 14, I made my way to downtown Houston, Texas, where Gene Autry was the star of the Fat Stock Show & Rodeo. I wanted to see my cowboy hero ride in the Fat Stock Show & Rodeo Parade & got a good vantage point at the corner of Main St. & Texas Ave. in front of the Rice Hotel. I was really close to his horse as he rode by & watched Gene fall off his horse landing hard on the street. Broke my heart to learn he had a drinking problem, because I saw the same thing at home as a little boy. But it didn't dim my enjoyment of his movies & radio show. He is still my hero. What a great time to have lived. From cowboy movies to the moon landing & back. Next thing you know we'll have a computer in our hand...oh, wait; we already do! Thank you posting. I had the chance meeting of Gene at Boaz, Alabama in 81 or 82. A man in a wheel chair, being pushed along by I believe his niece or grandaughter. I wouldn't have noticed so much if he hadn't been staring at my belt so hard, so I spoke to him and as I was looking at him I recognized him! I looked at the young lady that was standing behind him, and she knew I recognized him and said," We are here visiting his fan club", I think I mumbled, I didn't know there was one here, I'm from out of town and only came to shop at the outlets, but I will come back and look for it. Then they were gone and my mother ask me" Who was that you were talking to? He looks familiar. I laughed and said, "My biggest hero" Gene Autry! My mother nearly had a fit and started looking for them again, but we had lost sight of them in the crowd. I had Levi jeans, Tony lama boots, and a Champion trophy buckle on that day, that's what caught Mr Autrys' attention, he knew I was a real horsewoman. I treasure that memory as I treasured the man! Much love for what he gave us and his family! Thank you Jerry!

Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and the lone Ranger were my Hero's in the 1950's and still are today!! So sad that the kids today will never understand the Hero's we had back then. The hero's were for truth, justice and the American way and will never be duplicated for years to come util the American people wake up and demand that we support our America and American Hero"s !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks very much for your excellent story on Gene Autry it run so smoothly and tirelessly. I met Gene Autry as child of around 10 years old outside the London TV studios Lime Grove when I was a child and he greeted us all with a big smile and talked to us children and gave us a signed picture, I've been a fan since then.

I Grew up on a Farm in Kansas during the '40-50's and used to listen to Gene on the Radio every Saturday I believe. He always played "I love those dear hearts & gentle people who live & love in my home town" during the radio show & another I regret I can't recall.
