Gene Hoglan drum playthrough of Death's "The Philosopher" off the Individual Thought Patterns Album. From Gene's brand new DVD The Atomic Clock : The Clock Strikes Two.
"I remember on the 'adorable little riff tape' that Chuck sent me, this tune was pretty much ready to go. It didn't require any transposing on my part to make it any heavier."
"Now, this instance is possibly captured on the DVD, but as you may notice in the verses, I don't catch the hi-hat conventionally with my foot, I use my hands to catch it. I wanted to have the kick land under the snare yet still have the choked hi-hat on the same beat, and at that time, that kick drum would have been my left, which would obviously be my hi-hat choking foot. So, my only alternative was to do a hi-hat choke manually with my left hand. And you know what? In the long run, it probably didn't make a damn bit of difference. The hand chokes are not all that 'chokey', and the kick under the whole shebang doesn't really make it any more powerful.
Hey, remember when I said that I'm up for challenges? Apparently that runs to the 'self-inflicted' as well."
"The neato thing about this version is that I didn't even know that there was an extra two minutes of jam at the end until I'm getting filmed playing it! Apparently we played it that long on the original, but I definitely don't remember it. Hell, I'm too busy remembering Overactive Vaginas, Donald Tardy's and hi-hat chokings to remember long extendo-jams.
Again, there was no reviewing of anything before tracking the DVD, so on that filmed take, I'm actually surprised that this tune is not ending like, two bars after where the album's fade happens. Hence, me going way off the riff, 'cause with no click, there's really nothing to follow except for Chuck's random two-note progression. Ah well, warts & all is how I likes to brings it to ya. And don't forget, with zero prep either. Jeez Hoglan, get it together next time, will ya?"
The Wait is Over!
GENE HOGLAN's "The Atomic Clock: The Clock Strikes Two" DVD to be Released February 3, 2017
Featuring Interviews with Members of ANTHRAX, TESTAMENT and More!
GENE HOGLAN's highly-anticipated second DVD, The Atomic Clock: The Clock Strikes Two, is due to be released Feb. 3, 2017 and will feature the Clock himself breaking down some of his favorite beats, telling stories and playing along with tracks from several of his most legendary projects, including Strapping Young Lad, Testament and Death.
Filmed in high definition on a dozen cameras, with studio-mastered audio, this DVD offers a chance to see GENE HOGLAN play like never before. Though certainly inspirational for any level of musician, The Atomic Clock: The Clock Strikes Two is not only for drummers. Gene's easygoing, approachable attitude is readily apparent as he happily tells the viewer stories from his career, chatting as if with old friends about days in the studio or on the road.
An impressive roster of high-caliber musicians also weigh in over the course of the feature, offering stories about Gene and their experiences working with him. Interviews include Scott Ian and Frank Bello of Anthrax, 3 Inches of Blood/Revocation's Ash Pearson, Jason Bittner of Shadows Fall, Chuck Billy, Alex Skolnick, and Eric Peterson of Testament, and more.
Featured Tracks:
Testament: "Rise Up," "Native Blood"
Galaktikon: "On My Way"
Meldrum: "Walking Point," "A Toast To Romance"
Strapping Young Lad: "Skeksis"
Death: "Overactive Imagination," and "The Philosopher"
This DVD provides a glimpse into the philosophies, techniques, and history of one of metal's most influential musicians of all time.
The Atomic Clock: The Clock Strikes Two was recorded At The Warehouse Studios Vancouver, Canada. The DVD was edited by Leon Melas and directed by Rob Shallcross and Leon Melas, with co-direction from GENE HOGLAN. All audio was produced, engineered and mixed by Rob Shallcross with audio mastering from Greg Reely.

Most great drummers will praise other drummers. It’s sort of a professional courtesy, since a lot of these guys play festivals and wind up going on tour with each other at one time or another. After listening and watching for about 30 seconds, I felt it necessary to leave a comment, essentially saying that while listening, you are thinking, 'this guy is a freaking man'. But then when you watch him play, he makes these insane drums parts looks so frigging easy that he isn't even going to break a sweat. The guy is beyond amazing. If I was in a hugely successful band, I would be taking secret lessons from Mr. Gene Hoglan. Actually, I wouldn't keep it as a secret, I would tell the whole world that I was taking lessons from THE Master, just because he should be getting SOOO much more credit than he does. I love Gene. Meet him twice. Stand up dude. So kind and positive. I don’t fan boy when I meet musicians; I try to have candid conversations. In Las Vegas with Testament I told him I love Thought Patterns but Human is the best Death record and what Sean did for the band was pure magic. Gene elaborated on that comment and said he couldn’t agree more. Gene has a complex and articulate style. More chops than a Saturday afternoon Bruce Lee flick marathon. He took Death in a precise and calculated direction that was perfect for the progression of the genre. I love his work in testament.
