After seeing some of these farewell tour performances, it is good to go back and remember Phil as he once was, a vibrant and incredibly gifted performer.
Unfortunately everyone gets old and loses the vitality of youth. Whether our heroes are athletes, actors, musicians or our parents. As someone who grew up as an adolescent and a teenager all in the 70s and who lived and breathed progressive rock from the age of 12/13, so many of my musical idols have passed away in the last decade or so. Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, John Wetton, Chris Squire, Alan Holdsworth, Rick Wright, and many more. I'm just thankful I saw Genesis live 10 times on 6 different tours, and Phil and his solo band 4 times. That's 14 incredible drum duets with Chester Thompson back there with Phil. And I've seen Steve Hackett about 12 times and counting. I'm thankful all of the Genesis guys are all still alive and kicking at this point.
Damn near every Genesis song is a 12 out of 10 in my mind but, for whatever reason "Thats All" will always be at the top. Its a song that has been with me my entire life and never fails...
@@TheChadTI I was there too. Best concert ever. So many legendary bands and people. Got inside at 6 p.m. from buying a $250 ticket for 50 bucks outside because the concert had already been going on all afternoon and the guy just wanted some money for that extra expensive ticket. All tickets were a lot, nobody actually knows about this. Floor seats were 500 bucks, lower bowl seats $250 and even the upper deck nosebleeds were 50 dollars. Mind you, this is 1988 dollar. Concert tickets were only 20 BUCKS back then. This concert was like 10 times the normal price. The show ended at 2 o'clock in the morning. So fun. So memorable.
You can say anything about Genesis in 80's, but one thing is sure: they were awesome live, almost always! It's amazing how Phil was in tune and with no mistakes!
Tony Banks, The Genius of keyboards, he can play anything, and it's flying through the Clouds. And the Virtuoso Mike Rutherford, the love he feels for his Genesis family is impressive ... that is seen in his big eyes, whenever he sees Phil Collins sing and shares the stage with his companions. They are all like brothers. And the drummer "Chester Thomson" is the older brother. LONG LIVE GENESIS !!!!
The design reasoning behind the “headless” guitar is so that the player has more convenient and unobstructed access to the tuning knobs which have been moved to the far bottom side, easily accessible by the players picking hand. Much more effortless and efficient to stay in tune without having to reach out in front of themselves to the far, top end of the neck. Also, the strings are strung backwards with the ball ends, locked at the top end of the neck.
When it comes to Daryl Stuermer, I give it all to him. "It's Daryl", the beautiful guitar virtuoso. Even if he's dressed in shorts at an event ... It's Daryl stuermer !!!! wowwowwow
I can’t get enough watching these guys past or present, whatever era, I remind myself and have memories of the gig…I wish it was gigs…. That I went to early 1990s but in saying that… I never knew this existed so take pleasure in watching as I put a comment saying thank you for posting… 😊 always have and will not just love the Genesis music and some of their solo career bits but also have so much respect for all of them too and thank them all for my own life inspirations they gave me 😊
Very good ! So great, so talented musicians ! Phil Collins, such a great singer and one of the most recognisable voices of the 20th Century. It seems that Phil Collins had a lot of respect for Ahmet Ertegün the founder of Atlantic Records. I don’t know how long they practiced to master this medley, it must have been quite a lot of work. And as usual their famous quality playing live. 👏
The years between Genesis projects would be frustrating but in current day seeing how it's all in the past, these kind of performances take on an even greater importance to us fans. BBC boxset in March though! (2023)
Don Monmouth found all I need is a miracle weird and I worship Phil, use to him playing with the sound when he introduces mike, but other than that weird lol
@@jimcat68 I don't see any problem in the That's All/Tonight Tonight Tonight segue, also interesting arrangement on it, never done before or after. Kinda sounds like it would sound like in the ATTWT/Duke era.
Por siempre Genesis!!! Grandes virtuosos y música maravillosa, que no pasa en el tiempo. Su ritmo siempre estará vigente. GENESIS será recordado, por todas las generaciones venideras. Gracias amigo por subir este fantástico vídeo. YOU ROCK!!!
ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT....TAKES ME BACK TO THE NIGHT IT WAS AIRED ON TELEVISION..WITH FRIENDS BEEN OUT FOR DRINKS MET SOME LADIES, THEN THIS FROM GENESIS...WHAT A NIGHT........YOUNG AND DAFT.......
margus kiis I recorded this live on radio and loved the solo bits! As an admirer of Banks’ solo work I loved hearing him play his own stuff. Brings back many memories!
Not really their best performance in a technical sense. But it was fun to hear them do some Phil, Tony, and Mike material in addition to classic Genesis songs.
The last time they played “Misunderstanding” live - and the only time Daryl played bass on it. Also, the ONLY live performance of Tony’s solo song, “Short Cut To Somewhere”.
I was there until I freaked out about security frisking people and I had a stereo recording rig, so I bolted. I missed the Genesis set, but I did get to hear Phil forget the words to "In The Air Tonight".
On the upside, Phil had taken his Invisible Touch mullet out back and shot it; however, Daryl's white sports coat with the sleeves pushed up is inexcusable. Also, that's got to be the smallest keyboard setup Tony had played since 1972.
I note they stuck to songs where Mike played guitar on, so they didn't have to change out like they do with the 'old medley' classics in their own concerts. :)
Imagine for a second that the guys thought "Well, we have 20 minutes to play, what should we play?... wait! We have a 20 minute-song. Let's do that!" It would have been a legendary performance! In a way I see it like a wasted opportunity to bring back Supper's Ready one last time...
no jim youre the real poser fan here. go away. no one is here to see someone trolling all of genesis' work posted on youtube. plus im sure MANY people are fans of the peter and phil eras of this band.
Steve Hackett: Lead guitarist from 1971-77. Left the band cause he felt that not enough of his songs were getting on the records cause there wasnt enough room, plus he did a solo album before genesis released trick of the tail. came back for the six of the best concert in 1982. he played i know what i like and the knife. it was because thanks to the rain he arrived late. then in 1999 when they were re recording parts for the genesis archive album, he pete and the rest of the band remade "the carpet crawlers" to end the genesis story
Is the first and only time I watch Tony Banks MIDIing the CP-70/CP-80 to the Emulator II, that's during Shortcut to Somewhere, it fails in his own song as the notes sounds weak.
Think we had tech problem with Banks on all we need a miracle! Still a interesting mash of all their solo stuff is nice to see ! Strictly for some American extra promotion ! Does all sound a bit fast though. Still Genesis are the greatest!
Fique assombrado quando vi o vídeo da apresentação em Tóquio quando vi Mike Rutherford dominar a guitarra e a pedaleira do baixo nos pés. GRAND'MISTER.
...than it would be just another uninspired 80's Genesis album! By the way, It would be much more interesting to hear how the 80's Genesis songs would sound with the analog 70's technology. From today's point of view, many productions of 80s records are total junk. Luckily, around 2000, people got away from such completely cold, heartless productions.
Turn It On Again Land of Confusion Misunderstanding Throwing It All Away You Can't Hurry Love (The Supremes cover - Phil Collins song) Short Cut to Somewhere (Tony Banks song) All I Need Is a Miracle (Mike + the Mechanics cover) That's All Tonight, Tonight, Tonight Invisible Touch Turn It On Again (reprise) not the best tracklist ever, not the best medley ever
Respectfully disagree. I love medleys live. Love to hear how they link song to song. It’s a great way of squeezing a few more favorites into a live show. I love Supper’s Ready, Domino, Home By the Sea and Driving the Last Spike. But once you play those....you have like one hour left in a live show. For a gig like this where they only have 15 minutes to play......what would be better than a medley? Turn it on again, Misunderstanding and Invisible Touch? Firth of Fifth, Duchess, I Know What I Like and Afterglow? Or a nice medley displaying their careers? Medleys have their place.
