For such a promising young star, how did it all go so wrong for Genie Bouchard? While many theorize that a shift in focus towards her celebrity persona caused her downfall, the actual reasons for Genie’s demise are far more complex than many may have guessed.

The biggest problem is Genie's game, she's a hit and miss player, she's either on fire or she's missing everything, she doesn't have a plan B. the best tennis players are able to win when their game is not good, when they are having a bad day.
@scotth6814
@scotth6814 3 года назад
Yes, she's a one-dimensional player. She goes for winners all the time, and if they aren't going in, she doesn't adjust her aim to play a little safer. In essence, she beats herself, with too many unforced errors, and her opponents soon figured out how to exploit that.
@molybdaenmornell123hopp5
@molybdaenmornell123hopp5 3 года назад
That's not enough to explain a longterm trend, though, since she's always been like that, which begs the question why that same approach kept working early on but kept failing later. Did people figure out her game? Or did it change after all, voluntarily or not? The video suggests it deserted her due to injury, distraction and that confidence-sapping Wimbledon final loss.

I agree. I remember a match she played against Aga Radwanska (in Connecticut I believe), where Aga was winning comfortably and appeared to be cruising to victory until it got to match point, when Genie suddenly woke up and started playing as though every point mattered. Aga still won but she had to fight hard at the end to do it.
@resabape
@resabape 2 года назад
I would agree. She had talent but not the head for the game. When she was on (not often), everything seemed to work. When a change of strategy was required, she was lost and unwilling. However, that 6-8 months of fame made her an attraction. I'm guessing that she is not suffering financially. Tennis has served its purpose for her and I don't think we will see her on the courts again. Too bad! She is a treat for the eyes. Her tennis is not.

A major cause of the downfall is it didn't take too long for the tour to figure out her game and make adjustments. Once that happened, she never added anything to her style and stubbornly refused to change anything or alter anything to counter the opponents. When numerous coaches tried to get her to become more intelligent out there, she either "parted ways" with them or they got disgusted with her lack of flexibility and her know-it-all attitude. The truth is her game became ineffective quickly and once she started losing (the video is correct, it began way before the fall,) she lost the motivation to change and lacked the maturity of an adult to change her attitude. This all coincided with her emerging internet celebrity status which is much easier to manage than being a dedicated professional athlete. Genie is ranked #120 today on the computer and can't get into any event without qualifying or getting a wild card. Her credibility as an athlete has not been there for years. Those who say she'll make a resurgence as a serious tennis player are living a pipe-dream.

Finally, a complete video explaining why Bouchard failed in tennis. A lot of people were able to identify there was something really wrong with her tennis game ...because she was clearly very much into herself ....looking for her own publicity .....a very clear element of NARCISSISM that dominated over her tennis game. The public videos of her is evidence of this. For Bouchard ....she's all about her own appearance. She just happens to be able to play tennis ....but the looks are far more important to her. Recent publicity, Sept 2022 proves this out. She's done very little on the tennis courts for many years ...but she is announcing that she is the most beautiful tennis player. Bottom line, there is a way (although very difficult and challenging) of coming back. UPDATE (Sep): So Emma Raducanu won the US Open. In June 2021 she was 358 ranked. As a Canadian who follows tennis closely, I am glad you mentioned the 2014 Wimbledon Final. At the start of that year, she was around 29th in the world, and buoyed by Genie's Army she had great confidence. But also had glaring weaknesses in her game notably her second serve and, as was mentioned, a single dimensionality to her game. Other top players had more tools and greater skills but commentators like Chris Everett felt she had great mental toughness which made up for her lackings. That final expose all her glaring weaknesses. I remember telling a friend my assessment of her was like this: Pretend there was a book called "How to Beat Genie Bouchard." At the start of the year, it was the size of a pamphlet--after Wimbledon, it was the size of Mitt Romney Binders. Every professional tennis player in the world watches that final. She was then required to overhaul her game. As for the mental toughness, it was easy to say when things we going so well. But mental toughness needs to kick in when things are going badly. Things were actually starting to go better for Genie a bit (I think she should be where this all started in the top 32 in the world) and then the stupid injury happened. Still, I wish her well.

Wimbledon was the game changer. Other players and their coaches had figured out how to beat her. She had changed her game a little by New York but that was a devestating set back. Today, when push comes to shove, she goes back to her original style. Her confidence is also very fragile and confidence is a major factor in tennis. The key to the whole downfall I think is her high-pressure upbringing, her parents divorce, being separated at an early age from her family, called The Chosen One so early. Sounds like an insane situation she grew up in and had no childhood. All tennis all the time. I'm sure the outside attention was what she always wanted; a chance to let her hair down and have fun for once, have a life outside of tennis. Can't really blame her from what sounds like an unhealthy grooming to be a tennis player from the age of 3! I kinda see her like Anna Kournikova. I remember seeing Kournikova's mom always at her matches and seeing the pressure to play tennis she had so early on. The outside stuff and attention she got seemed a welcome relief from all that pressure. I'm sure Kournikova is happy with how her life turned out. Genie will be good no matter what happens I think. She's already a success by getting out of a pressure packed tennis tennis tennis life and finding other ways to make income.

Please don't equate/compare Bouchard to Anna Kournikova. Kournikova's career was derailed by injuries and she had to retire in her early 20s. Many players dont even reach their tennis prime until after that so who knows what would've have happened if Kournikova was able to continue playing. Also, Kournikova had much success in doubles and was even ranked number 1 which makes the comparison all the more unfair.

Apart from the obvious (injuries etc), the answer to 'what happened to X' is always distraction. Rickie Fowler in golf, Brain Shaw in strongman, Genie... we mortals wonder why someone dropped out of the rankings when the miracle was that they got there in the first place. As Mike Tyson said, you have to sacrifice happiness to be the best in the world at anything. The sacrifice is immense, and a side-career as a model or media personality (so called "influencer") is tempting.

I was one of those Genie haters too. Then at one of the big tournaments I saw Genie turn around from a crowd, without any camera's around to sign and talk to a kid with Downs Syndrome, that was a very classy gesture. I think she can win many hearts when she realizes some things are bigger than the game.

I still remember Sharapova appearing on Letterman, and then losing the next match at the US Open. Success at a young age has many pitfalls, and it's easy to see how these players can lose focus. It takes a professional team to keep them focused on their sport of choice. At this level, there's a very small window to succeed, and if you miss it, then it's gone forever. I still remember her run at Wimbledon, and telling my friends how good she was - it was the first time I had seen her play. Given the current talent in the WTA, I don't see her making an impact on the game. As a fan, I wish I could be more optimistic, but hope has now given way to reality.
