Love the ending comments, I don’t think it is so much that you are changing your style, more that you really appreciate it when things look pretty! Decanting pantry items, organizing a closet colour coordinated just looks pretty and now that you have your home super organized, you have the time to make every corner not only function, but look pretty too! Cause you are the best! And an inspiration! And just spectacular!

I think our organizing styles can change depending on what season of life we are in. Before kids, I was much more detailed - a micro organizer for sure! After having kids, I was a throw-my-crap-in-a-bin person LOL. But, my kids are getting older and I notice myself getting back to that micro-organization (a little) because I have more time to be detailed. So, it just depends on what my life is like as to what style I use I think.

Am I the only one on the brink of tears watching this? It makes me feel very hopeful…learned there are different types of organization and that my husband and I are different. I just have to say I'm so appreciative that Cass defined these organizing styles the way she did, with no judgment or "fixing" the people who organize differently from her. As a neurodivergent young adult, a lot of my work is learning to accept myself as I am and understanding that needing to do things differently doesn't mean I'm doing them wrong or that I as a person am wrong. Understanding and accepting that my organizing style of "I need to be able to see everything in a category at once but it all has to be hidden when I don't need it or else I can't relax" is perfectly fine was a tiny, early step towards "my life will never look like that of someone who is neurotypical and that's okay."

After a TBI, organization as a rule is iffy at best. I want to see my stuff, or else there's sticky notes everywhere to remind me what is behind each door, at least until habit helps me remember. It kind of an oxymoron, but every once in a while I get like a tornado. Empty out everything and resort, declutter and detail organize. I guess my left brain is fighting my right brain, or something... Or maybe it's fantasy self breaking through and trying to take control! Lol!

I agree with what you said about having more mental space to organize. A lot of people who don’t put things away struggle with mental health. Neatness and tidiness can be their natural personality, but the desire for tidiness can get overtaken by depression and other mental health struggles. Having a sense of peace can be really freeing to the minds of those who struggle with mental health. Having a sense of finally achieving that peace can give someone a renewed sense of purpose in their space, like a key unlocking a door in their mind that they’ve had blocked off for years.

I have to say, this channel have changed my life in the last year and a half. I did declutter - but without understanding good organisation, I would have never been as this stage now. 😅 I know this is controversial, but I actually think that, rather than everyone having one organising style, it is the space that determines what organising style suits this part of the house. Hear me out: - Lots of time on your hands: micro organisation is ideal - Less time on your hands: macro organisation is ideal - High mental/physical energy in general: visual organisation is ideal - Low mental/physical energy in general: hidden organisation is ideal - And the key to all of it: Declutter to the point that you actually have room for a functional space. ☺ It is not so much that people are one specific organising style; it is more that different organising styles fit different areas of the house/life. In the closet and in decoration, I am a bee with everyday things, and a ladybug with out of season things. In the bathroom, butterfly (because I need mornings to be quick). In the kitchen, cricket. (because I have more time in the evening, when I spend most time in the kitchen). So I think different organising styles benefits different types of routines. So if you structure your daily habits differently, you will likely need a different organising style to match. ☺ Before my closet declutter, I was very much 'shove and hide'. My laundry basket was too small, and difficult to access, so dirty laundry would also spread, and take ages to sort in colors before washing. Because there was not room to put the clean laundry, and on laundry day, I was always stressed because I also did a lot of cleaning, so I had no energy left to put it away. After the declutter, and changing my laundry day to a more peaceful day, I naturally file fold my socks and underwear, and organise my clothes into 3 capsule wardrobes (1 week each), that are neatly put away where they belong. 😅 I also invested in 2 bigger, pretty laundry baskets. They stand in the corner where I take of my clothes, and now have room for the amount of laundry I have, and I sort by colour as I put it in. In the past, I would buy a weeks worth of groceries, have to carry it home on foot (no car), and because I bought so much at a time, it would be heavy and I had no energy to put it away nicely. I had no organisation, so things would be overfilled and cluttered, and no idea what I had. After decluttering, I do it twice a week after work. I meal plan, so I know exactly what to get, and I make sure to incorporate the things I already have. This means I have to carry less, grocery trips are more enjoyable. When I get home, I have the energy to put it away nicely, and I actually have space in the cupboards to put it away nicely.

Same! When I was growing up I had the messiest room, was misplacing things all the time, not taking care of them, and what I chose to keep and decorate was likewise all over the map. I’ve gone through a couple of different styles in both possessions and displaying / caring for them since. My mom has too, with her own homes over different decades. This is just one more facet of how we age and mature as people.

@marieortiz158 you know, if it's not for you, you can just walk away from it. You definitely do not have to take the time to watch things, read the comment section, and reply to things. A lot of people have ADHD, or OCD, or depression/anxiety, or are just so over-extended that at the end of the day, their brain might be just be too tired to focus on things 100%. @moongirl8807
@moongirl8807 7 месяцев назад
@marieortiz158 what is it now, that she recycles information or that she relies on her ADHD for viewers? First of all her system is great so why should she come up with something new? Her content is actually quite variable, the minimal mom for example always tells you the exact same thing over and over if you watch her videos. And the ADHD thing I don't get at all, she mentions it once or twice but not that often (I didn't even know that she had it at first), and I'm sure that many people struggle with organising even if they don't have ADHD. And she doesn't even give ADHD specific tips. So idk what you mean, should she not mention it? Should she make more for ADHD? Or nothing at all? Enough people watch her that don't have ADHD, and I think it's validating to hear her talk about her struggles. I have it too and if a fellow ADHD person can be a professional organizer, I can get better at it too. I'm glad we can talk about these things nowadays.
@marieortiz158
@marieortiz158 7 месяцев назад
@moongirl8807 I don't like the minimal mom. To me, they are the same person. It's funny how you guys just jump to her defense like you know her personally. My opinion is that she DOES rely on saying she has ADHD to retain her audience. Too many people on RU-vid use it to gain an audience. It's insulting to those of us that actually struggle with it.

I find that your space can dictate your organizing style you have to work with what you've got, and if it's really limiting on options then you can't really organize in a way that works best for you. So if your environment changes and you now have enough space to embrace your style needs, it makes a huge difference.

As a young working divorced mother, my home was often a mess until the weekend when I had time to clean. There were just a few precious hours after work to prepare dinner, play with my children and get them ready for bed. There were days I fell asleep with one of them in a business suit. As they got older, homework time was added and they had chores, so that helped a little, but my main focus was spending time with them at night and not worrying about the mess until they were asleep. I’d get a little done here and there, but the weekends were for cleaning and playing. It was stressful at times looking at clutter during the week, but I knew once the older teen years hit things would be different. And they were. I had more time to organize and keep the mess a little more minimal. When the kids went off to college, I suddenly had the cleanest house and I actually missed the mess and noise. Now I have grands and love the mess we make playing. I even love cleaning it up when they are gone. Make memories loving and enjoying time with family. The mess can be cleaned up later.

Funny enough, color coordinating was how it started with me too. Then it was dividers in my dresser drawers and it kept progressing. I swore for years I was a lady bug! With a family of eight, we never had enough space, and it was very overwhelming. We were very minimal, but even the basics for eight people, it still adds up. Now that we’ve had enough space for well over a year, I’ve discovered I’m actually a cricket! Remember when you said crickets will be disorganized until they find the perfect solution? I think that goes hand in hand with overwhelm, and/or lack of space. We kind of make do, until we are able have a real home for each item. Does this mean a lady bug is an overwhelmed, anxious or distracted cricket? 🤔 OR are there a lot of overwhelmed crickets masquerading as lady bugs?

When you share your space with a partner, I think you both adapt your styles so you can develop a system that works for each of you but still matches the kinds of people you are. This takes time to develop and iis frustrating at times but people who are successful at building a life together do work things out. As you get older your needs change and so your systems adapt with these changes, too. The fact that you CAN make these changes means you are managing this gracefully and successfully.

I have *absolutely* seen my organization style changing. After experiencing the fogginess of chemo brain and now getting into (just!) my senior years I find that as soon as I close the door on anything I no longer remember I have it. OK, maybe a slight exaggeration here but not by much. Clear bins are a must and I find I'm leaving more and more items out on the counter. Senior mobility issues also mean a need to minimize steps so daily cooking ingredients stay stove-side now and it gets harder and harder to reach to the back of lower cabinets so items need to move forward and stay in well-lighted sight. Maybe it's time to do an episode for the Boomers, Cas.

I keep bottles of my meds in three different places to save steps (and pain). Keep in mind, though, that some actions like reaching for things are helping your mobility, so think carefully about just how much changing where things are will help or hinder you.

I think we've "solved" the lower cabinet issue. We use a bin inside the cabinet. When we need something from the lower cabinet, we grab hold of the bin, pull it out like it was a drawer, get what we need then push it back in. If we were living in our own home, instead of a rental, I would retrofit the lower cabinets with drawer inserts.

I now have open shelves in our kitchen instead of upper cabinets. I personally prefer the cabinets, but my husband would leave the doors open, and it drove me crazy. So I took the cabinets down and put up open shelves. Now, the kitchen stays neat and organized. His needs trump my need for hidden organization in public areas. In my closet or in my side if the bathroom cabinet and in my office it is tailored to my ladybug style but in public areas if you want your family to help keep the house organized you have to help them by defaulting to their style. Here is a little truth bomb.... im learning to like the butterfly organizational style. For instance, my pantry is now so visual... I no longer have trouble knowing what food items I have.

In the few areas where I have really decluttered and have a specific, easy to access spot to put things away, I am finally not a pile person! I pile because it is easy but if it is easy to set in the designated spot, I will. It's been a revelation about too much stuff😂❤

This intro breakdown of types of organizers is maybe the most helpful thing I’ve seen on the internet this year. My partner and I moved in together almost a year ago and I am a visual & detailed organizer. Even just understanding that someone else in the world has a name for his style of [::ahem:: not what I would call….] organizing helps me reframe how I see the way he does it. Thanl you!!🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 truly. Because he always says it is already organized and he can find everything he needs but I am deeply opposed to needing to shuffle through a drawer to fund anything. I’d far rather take the time to stack and unstack when I put things away whereas he finds that to be an overwhelmingly daunting task. This is not even hyperbole: you have probably just prevented at least five big arguments for 2025 as we prepare to move again - very unexpectedly - in two weeks. Moving again means a whole new organizing in new spaces. I’m also a person who has to experience and feel the stuff in the space before I can commit to how it will land whereas he wants to make a detailed furniture plan before we ever get there.

I remember Cass talked about this in another video, she said that the more detailed organizer will need to give in to the ways of the less detailed organizer, because you can’t force him to become more detailed. If he needs big see-through bins and no doors on the closets and pantry in order to put things away, then it’s probably better to do that so that you aren’t constantly cleaning up after him and resenting it. Then, if there’s a closet or bathroom that is only yours, you can detail that area as much as you want

I believe life’s seasons can affect your organizing style too. I am a recovering cricket 😂 but after having 3 kids 2 and under and finding your chanel I changed my ways so that I could keep up. My cricket self wanted to put everything away just right with the appropriate amount of time and stuff ended up everywhere for the first time in my life. I started macro organizing things that I was struggling with (as well as decluttering with the help from minimal mom) and it made a huge difference!

I don't know if my organising style has changed, but I think this is finally the year I stop being a low-level hoarder. A few months ago we bought a house. The details are a long story, but basically we had 11 weeks between starting to search for a place to live and actually moving in, with 4 weeks at a friend's house, our stuff in storage. So we didn't actually have time to go through our stuff, literally anything we could shove in the storage unit went in the unit. Last week we finally unpacked the last box. That sounds like we finally finished settign in. . . if only! We own SO MUCH STUFF. Like. . . I know it's my stuff, I vaguely remember buyign it, but where did it all come from??? We've already taken like 4 IKEA bags of stuff to the charity shop, and we stuff have sooo many piles to sort through. I never want to buy anything ever again 😂

I think we adapt to environment. In my totally personal spaces (translation - one drawer, one shelf), I am a Cricket, but with my Bee husband and Butterfly sons living in all the spaces, I needed to adapt. Example, we all use those electric toothbrushes that fit in NO container, and dear family HAS to have the paste and brushes ON the counter, I found a so cute cutlery bin at the dollar store with four compartments! Oh yeah! Everyone has a spot, things are contained and it's adorable! (I put it backwards on the counter and it doesn't say cutlery on the other side!) I'm happy!

The main thing that improved my bathrooms was definitely decluttering, but the second was realizing that it was ok if I preferred stuff on the counter. I just got a clear bin and put all my stuff in it, voila! Same with the kids stuff, two little containers for their toothbrushes and suddenly everything is easy to clean, it looks neat always, it's like magic. None of us were going to put our stuff away, and realizing that and accepting it was just life changing (I'm a butterfly and am pretty sure my partner is too, and my kids are young so leaving stuff out is just their nature 😂)

Now, I’m a happy hopping cricket and my husband (the ladybug) has gotten on board with your cleaning clutter craze and he has actually started organizing the clothes hangers “Cricket Style”. I’m so excited and happy about this. Yes! You can obviously transform from one bug to another if you are around that other bug style long enough. All you flying bugs, take some time and get to know a cricket and their cleaning clutter style. We not only declutter, we clean clutter also. Ground yourself as a cricket does and embrace the art and skill to organizing your hidden mess. Happy Tidying Tuesday y’all.

I believe I used to be a bee. But since I've been arranging a house that I bought in February, I realize I am a CRICKET!! I have absolutely embraced drawer dividers and organizers. In my guest bathroom I have 4 bins in the cabinet and each of them have a set of color coordinated bath, hand, washcloth towels. My kitchen cabinets are so organized it's amazing to me. My clothes closet makes more sense than it ever has before. What I've realized is that since I've slowly moved my stuff into my home from storage units, I am taking the time to arrange everything the way that works for me. I never had that option before when I had a whole family living with me. (The last time I moved was 27 years ago.) I have to tell you that without your guides for HOW TO organize that makes sense, I might have just dumped everything the way I used to, but this home is organized and I feel so relaxed here.

YES YES YES!! As I have grown up from a young mom who almost divorced before I found Flylady almost 25 yrs ago, I have slowly become the tidy organized person I always wanted to be. It's like the Atomic Habits book explains. I just started giving myself grace and improving where I could, speaking to myself about who I wanted to be, and over time I changed, my home changed, and I grew into someone who LOVES to maintain her peaceful home. Gone is the bitter martyr, welcome now to the creator of a peaceful home.

I'm a Bee through and through, and I never could work out why my dad would call me a hoarder when I've moved so many times that I really don't have heaps and heaps of things (I barely even own any cosmetics), yet he has, for example, four VCRs and six vacuums in his garage. My opinion, such that it is, is that now that you have more SPACE to work with, you are adapting to your new space by being a LITTLE more "cricket-like" and detailed. When I have the room to have everything in its own little space, I'm much happier, but if my space is limited, things just get mish-mashed.

I went from a full blown 100% cricket closed doors non see-through pretty containers micro organization. To a bee with the hidden stuff in clear acrylic bins so it's easy to spot as soon as those cupboard doors are open in the bathroom. A combo ladybug with a little cricket in my kitchen and bedroom. I'm still a full cricket in my office. My living room is butterfly ladybug. The biggest transformation was the acrylic containers in the bathroom and kitchen, I never thought I needed them or had the time to keep them looking aesthetically pleasing. This is what decluttering my home removing the just incase items and unessary years of buying crap I don't need or use has done. Still trying to figure out my style for the garage 😄

YAY! Welcome to the cricket family! I am inherently a cricket but when I started my organizing journey it was because the overwhelm of my hoard had become too much and to start I had to recognize that everything will not be perfect in the beginning, I just had to start. When I started I had to give myself the grace to put things in larger categories (macro organizing) just to get the ball rolling. After doing this for about 6 years I have found out that while I enjoy things hidden....I actually want them to be visual when I open a door/drawer/closet. So my pantry is full of clear organizers because then I can see when I need to buy more of something without having to open things to check. I almost think that the organization can kind of change from room to room. Maybe it is because of your new house...or maybe it is because you keep decluttering and finding more time and detailed organization is becoming easier. Either way, as long as you're loving it, it's good!!!! Btw I've been sooo busy that I haven't been watching much lately but is there a season 3 Hot Mess House coming???

For most of my life I've believed and touted, A Leopard can change it's spots, it just realizes things need to change. Of late, I've modified to understand that what we want is powerful. Understanding what we want puts our focus in that direction and change can happen. That said, I only see a need/want to decant items that will be stale before I finish them.

I agree with having different capacities for different things when it comes to organizing. Generally, I’m a ladybug. However, I also know I SUHUUUUCKKK at mornings. So I hang my clothing by category and color, Sunday night I pull out enough outfits for the week plus one extra in case I change my mind or go into the office an extra day. I pulled the doors down from my closets cuz they’re the obnoxious overlap kind where things in the middle get lost. Put up curtains instead. Things I need in the bathroom in the morning get to stay out. Weekly hair or skin treatments get put away. I’m a ladybug 95% of my day but when I wake up I turn into a big ole butterfly and I’ve just learned systems around it.

Yes, I totally think it's possible for your style to shift or morph at least a bit. You and I have talked a few times about my style and you've consistently pegged me as a bee as opposed to a cricket. While I see more and more that this is true (for example, when you talked about whether you put the stuff you use daily in the bathroom away after use or not, I realized that, although it's neat, it has to be out or I don't use it) I can also see places where I'm changing. I used to have a huge wall of floor to ceiling bookshelves in a previous space and didn't mind that all the books were visible. Now, I find I like to have memorabilia visible in little vignettes and put books away behind a closed door because the visual clutter was getting oppressive. I've also reduced the amount of things out on my kitchen counters and like the calmer feeling it brings. It's still not empty or sterile but it isn't chaotic and doesn't attract nearly as much random clutter. Is it age/maturity? Lack of space? Experience gained with working with people in my niche (the chronically disorganized and small space living)? Who knows? But it's interesting.

I have found that since we are both visual that has helped me organize some spaces AND I've noticed my butterfly self starting to micro-organize some things... not all BUT some. I think he's rubbing off on me. LOL And now that he knows I'm a macro-organizer (and brain) he's a bit more patient and understanding with me not "categorizing" things like he does.
