I love how Wilhelm doesn't give a damn about his weapon and just rushed over towards his baby brother as soon as he could that's a totally big brother move to do
there was a similar but much more chilling scene in the book "the forgotten soldier". in it, the author talks about his experience on the eastern front during the German retreat. he was manning an MG position set up in a trench in order to slow down the pursuing red army. while describing the relative calm of observing the empty yellowed grass fields in front of him, he mentions the entire horizon suddenly erupting in green as hundreds of russians charge screaming at them as the first shells of the russians start raining on their position. he goes on describing how they fired the MG until the barrel melted and the men in the position next to theirs were literally buried alive by the artillery barrage. nightmare stuff but an excellent book
@@blindmelonstubbly yes they just focused on d day they didnt even focused the bravery act of the axis i think the reason why the eastern front is largely forgotten is because of cold war propaganda
@@odessadmitry That wasn't the point. We were refering to the fact that a normal german soldier wasn't a Nazi, but a scared boy, often around 18 years of age and wanted nothing else but to go home. Same as any soldier back then. It's retarded to believe that the regular german soldier even could define what national socialism was. They were kids most of them
Uh... I've got news for you. Those old bitter men were once young and stupid men themselves. Foolish people think old men connive young men into fighting their wars for them, when the truth is that those old men were once the young warriors themselves. Old men often don't want to fight anymore, while young men can hardly be restrained from fighting. Face it - war is the province of the young.

@@msautopartsrecyclingcomple6669 when my grandfather was young, the Nazis burned down his village. And then he went to war, and took Berlin. My grandfather is white. Or is it not tolerant? you have it in fashion now.
What you want him to do? His best chance of surviving is getting back to his lines as fast as possible. He can't do that if he is going to be running Serpentine Pattern and be slowed down ending up being close or caught by the Reds. The only thing I have spotted is why in gods good green earth did he not drop whatever he had in his hands to be able to run faster. I am pretty sure his life is more valuable then whatever was in those mess tins.
@@mikkel066h Wilhelm was a bit stupid at the beginning of the series, I can imagine he was fear struck throughout a lot of it, no being able to think properly
These were the true heroes of mankind. Real men with so much fighting spirit in their soul. Germans or American or Russians they all fought for their fatherland. I am ashamed of my generation
Hitler didn't order the issue of winter clothing for his troops in Russia because he thought it would be all over by the time winter came. As a result many thousands of Germans died from the cold.
This was by far the Best Whermacht Series ever made. It showed the strugles of ordinary Germans in the second WW and it just wasn't fair how many suffered.
@@user-np2to2qb7k I don't speak Russian. Ill translate... Pffff. Dude Most of the Wehrmacht were drafted and had no choice. Even Tons of Russians did not want to fight but were sent to their deaths. Only 40% of Germans were actually in support of the National socialist party. If they are guilty of anything it is standing idle and being to scared to do anything , which for that i don't blame them. The alternative was death from gestapo.
Sometimes you have to admit that the Germans were one hell of a good soldier. They are able to fend off 02 great powers during WW1 and almost reach Moscow during WW2. As a soldier no doubt they are great, it is the higher ups let them down.
Germany + All of its friends, largely fighting only a single power directly over the course of time, and was already on the retreat once the 2nd European front opened?
@@comradesillyotter1537 the second front was opened only because America and England understood that the Soviet soldier would reach Paris and Lisbon, they were frightened
@@PHILEMENATION1 Really?! The US declared war against Germany on Dec.7, 1941 and invaded Normandy on June 1944. Let me ask you a question, dude: who do you think fought the war against Nazi Europe, led by Hitler's Germany - from 1941 and 1944?! Maybe France that surrendered in 38 days with 96 divisions?! Or UK that barely escaped from Durnkerk and only the English Channel saved them! So, nail this into your brain: it was the SOVIET UNION WHO FOUGHT AND WON AND CRASHED Hitler!
It does not really matters if you are German, USA, english or Argentine like me. Since I´m a father this kind of things always makes me sad. Beyond the causes of this war, there was people falling death and famillies that never saw their relatives again
It would be interesting if HBO did a band of brothers about the German Soldiers. In WW2 Probably will never happen. But most were ordinary people Id love to watch that
Hand held camera in the trench tells the viewer "This is what it would look like to be here ." 35 - 50 individual shots , each one 1/3 to 1 second in length . MASSIVE !
Sabaton Sweden 'The Art of War' One of his works is devoted to the heroic defense of Wizna in 1939. In the song '40: 1 'the group praised the bravery of 720 Poles who fought off the attack of 42,000 German soldiers for three days.
This shows the devastation of war frok the east n perfect advance with panzer divisions i.e armour in from n infantry at the back with thier planes in the air wow I didn't understand a single word they have spoken but the feel was through it! Gr8 job
The tactics of the German Army are not very well-represented in this miniseries, if at all. There are scenes where the conduct of supposedly experienced soldiers is simply amateurish, with devastating results.
My mother was born in January 1941. The village is 50 km from Moscow and 40 km from the line where the offensive of the German troops was stopped (Volokolamsk). My grandmother told me that when the German soldiers entered the village, and nearby all the villages had already been burned, many villagers had already dug dugouts and drove animals, cows and sheep there. Mom was only 8 months old, she was crying loudly for some reason ... Some soldier grabbed it and poured it with a kiroshin and set it on fire. The grandmother grabbed the child and quickly dipped it into a vat of water ... Later, a German officer brought ointment and ordered it to be smeared. The scar on the left eye and eyelid remained for life. There are many personal photos and stories ...Before the battle at Volokolamsk, my grandmother managed to walk 40 km through a snowy forest to her grandfather on the front line with bread crumbs in 2 weeks. Her three daughters, whose eldest is only 7 years old, middle 5 and my mother, almost a year old, stayed in a dugout with a cow ... I call this courage. How can this be forgotten .. And this is already at the genetic level in every Russian family....The village passed from hand to hand 4 times. My aunt from Stalingrad told me that when the German troops were surrounded and driven away from the Volga, in the city on the ruins the earth was 3 cm thick metal ... Also a short film. The film is called Tsyrkach ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z94s6HBpxoI.html&ab_channel=GamePlaync364
Reality !!! They had to do this, orders of Stalin. In the back there always was a communist NKVD ( before KGB) army unit, ready to shoot their own soldiers . So they had no choise than to attack , at the cost of millions....that is the only reason Soviet-Russia lost so many soldiers.
@@frankiestefan8804 that thing happened with german soldiers as well, people who retreated were either sent in prison camps and later executed or ltierally executed there on the spot by the general. i don't know about americans but i think that some episodes of execution due to retreat happened
@Wiking Raider that happened with the germans, it actually started from them, the soviets, who knew that they were doing that to german soldiers who tried to escape, decided to do that as well with their soldiers in order to stop them from escaping or other things.
thing is, if you were to look at the war in the west, it's bloody fighting, but then, you look over at the east, the line where Germany ends and Poland begins, is where WW2 was the bloodiest of anything, the Eastern front and the Chinese war, easily the bloodiest area in history
Actually Russians had more weapons and technics, especially tanks of many modifications. But West propaganda makes his job perfect. Just Russian soldiers were not so good trained for new war tactic as German in 41-42 and German unexpected assault with their 4 Tank Groups almost crashed Red Army in 41 (In France it was only one German Tank Group) . But in 43-45 all East Europe and East German cities fell down very fast, especially Berlin battle - that was huge glory of Red Army strategy and tactic in this bloody war
I saw this one documentary where they said that if the Germans had the stg44 when they invaded Russian like they originally wanted they would have done far better against the Soviets than they did. I had no idea what he meant of course because I thought all guns were the same and only how good the user was what only mattered. But looking into many videos on how guns work and instructed by actual firearms experts and actually firing guns( only a glock. Mp5. Ar 15, mouser, a 22 revolver , a small semi version of the ak I don’t remember what it’s called and a ruger mini 30 that’s it) I now understand the huge difference in gun types and their purposes but since I never fired it at another person or ever been in war I don’t know what the out come would have been
