Sound guys are the best - and ironically always the guys that are most into film on every set I have been on. Of course they hate wide angles (when booming) and often (as you guys mentioned) try to get you to tighten up the shot. Great Audio is gold. Some awesome tips in this video. Her eis another one I heard - although I am sure you know it - imagine voice as a flame coming from the source - the most intensity is often at a point about 1 ft out from the mouth. Interestingly here in Australia a lot of the soundos jumped into drones as a way to spread their work risk.

Diggin’ your channel man! I shoot with a G9 with a boomed Deity D3 Pro. The G9 is very similar to the GH5 so all of these videos you’ve been making for it have been great. Thanks for the great content man! Subbed 🤙🏽

Caleb Hoover For sure man! And thanks, I’ve been super happy with it! The G9 is killer, especially with the recent update that allows for 10 bit 🙏🏽 I don’t use it all the time, but nice to have the option! And the D3 Pro is a great compromise between convenience/portability and quality 👌🏽 I just use a standard 6ft TRRS 3.5mm cable in place of the stock one (most of my shots are pretty close up, so I don’t need much length). Nothing fancy and probably not the best solution, but it’s simple and works for what I do 😅

Caleb is that extremely low all the way down setting to -12dB etched in stone? Shouldn't the adjustments vary from different microphones used? I know you have more experience than me so I'm just asking. I have a Rode NTG-2 that I want to connect to my Lumix GH5 using a Kopul Low Impedance to High Impedance Transformer and I don't know what to expect, I heard Cutis Judd say I'm going to get a thin sound and a very noisy background. I don't know if Judd used a GH5 at the time of his test or the camera he used had was identical to the GH5's audio stages. Do you think audio adjustments beyond your recommended setting of -12dB will help me avoid bad audio?

I have the GH5 and a Røde video micro and am trying to decide if I should get a better mic first or if an audio recorder would give me better audio from the mic I already have.

I have the Rode wireless go with my gh5. Is there a difference in audio quality if I plug it straight into my gh5 via the mic input, vs using the Panasonic DMW-XLR1 with XLR lapel mics to capture audio?
@BansheeVision
@BansheeVision 3 года назад
When using the DMW-XLR1 XLR Adapter with Xvive U3C can you tell me it it should be set to MIC or 48v? The Xvive transmitter provides phantom power to the mic and the receiver is plugged into the DMW-XLR1 XLR Adapter. Will 48v setting harm the receiver?

Great video guys. On the Deity, I have the same mic, what is the max distance you would use it for? I’m in the studio and 10 feet away from the camera just isn’t picking up audio too well. So, I run a longer cord and attach the deity to a boom close by me so the GH5 can be 10 feet away. I know this is common sense.....deity is best on cam from 4 feet away or closer. Thoughts on this?
@CalebHoover

yeah it'll definitely need to be closer to you to get the best out of it. if you can't get closer, maybe a lav would be the best

Very informative video! Thanks! Complete noob question for the GH5. I have a standard lapel mic and a Rode MicroPro. When I plug either in and listen through headphones, I hear a LOT of background noise. Almost sounds like interference. Is there a setting that causes that?

Great tips here. I am wondering if it is worth purchasing a separate recorder or whether the Rode Micro and Deity would do the trick. I run a small production company and hope to do some short documentary style pieces as well as the usual corporate style videos (I have been doing fine with a Sennheiser Lav mic I managed to pick up used but great condition for interviews so far). Thanks Caleb
@CalebHoover
@CalebHoover 3 года назад
the rode micro or deity would depend on where you can place the mic. i personally like recording into separate recorders but really depends on what your budget is and how you're able to get the mic setup to capture the best possible audio.

Hi I have questions on how to use the S5iix with a tentacle sync E set. I've been getting super loud high frequency noise whenever I use the tentacle connected via a Y cable, 1 channel gets timcode signal and the other gets the sound signal. Mic socket is set to MIC. No other settings as far as I know. I use a sanken CS1 mic with a XVIVE P1 phantom power supply connected to it and a cable connecting xlr to 3.5 mm mini jack cable to the audio output of the camera. The sound is recorded fine when I just use the mic connected to the camera. It took me some time to understand that I get the loud noise only when I turn my tentacles on to sync with the HFs connected to my Zoom F6 external sound device. Help me please. Is there something else I need to set in the menu to be able to get a correct sound?

I use Streamyard to produce mostly live content. I recently purchased a Shure MV7 microphone to use with my GH5 and noticed that there is some lag/syncing issue between the audio and video. Streamyard informed me of the following: Please make sure your camera's fps, and your audio bitrate matches ours! Here is the bitrate for live streaming that we use for StreamYard: 1080p HD, 4500kbps video bitrate 720p HD, 3000kbps video bitrate The audio bitrate is 128kbps. We use 30fps across all resolutions! At 1080p, how do I adjust my settings to match what Streamyard has suggested?

I have an issue with my GH5 I think. Whenever I use a microphone, sometimes there will be these weird glitch sounds in the audio. It happens at random and I don't know what I can do to fix it. Nowhere online has any answers, and I couldn't find any videos on this either. Do you know what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.
@marcharris4313
@marcharris4313 2 года назад
I had that problem and it seemed to be the cable wire connection which gets bent and over time causes a poor connection when the wire moves around (like when I walk). I had to change the cable and I opted for a new mic with cable. I got the Aspen Mics HQ-SE Locking TRS Lavalier clip on. It works great with the RODELink TX & RX that I use with my GH-5.

the max input level to - 12 Db on the GH5 is really insufficient. You can clearly see this in the video at 1:50 too. Nate seems to have quite a soft voice and you can see the audio almost clipping already. It's really a big big disappointment of the GH5. You are really forced to turn the mic limiter on to prevent any spikes, especially if you can't control someone's emotions and unexpected changes in voice, while doing an interview for example. Which brings up the question, how bad is it actually, does turning the limiter on reduce sound quality? Also i'm experiencing so much background noise when i'm outside - just in a quiet forest - but just the wind in the trees gives a huge constant noise in the audio, while my input level is set to -12 Db. Is there any other setting to minimalise such background noises, or like loud motorbikes or cars in the background? Would really appreciate an answer, or a direction as to where to look for an answer to these questions, as i'm new in the magnificent world of video audio. Thanks, and good video btw, thumbs up!

that's the thing about these hybrid cameras the picture quality is great but the audio functions are really lacking. i would suggest maybe looking into the XLR1 which would give you more professional control over the audio amzn.to/3s5BqQ5
