Gibson has introduced a pair of affordably priced solid wood acoustic guitars that are sure to turn some heads. The new G-45 Standard and G-45 Studio pick up with the popular J-15 left off with the round-shoulder dreadnought shape that is synonymous with Gibson and the J-45. The G-45 Standard and G-45 Studio both feature solid top, back and sides with electronics and a hard shell case for $1299 and $999, respectively. A slightly shallower depth, paired with a walnut back and sides and a solid spruce top with non-scalloped X-bracing producing a lively, punchy tone from both guitars. To see how good these new budget priced USA Gibson Acoustics were we put them through their paces and compared what's different, what's the same and which one you are likely to want to add to your stable of guitars.

These are great, great guitars. Love the neck profile. Love the string spacing. Love the 24 3/4 scale (as always). This is a very unique Gibson, and I mean that in a good way. They did a couple of things that helped create the unique and beautiful tone The Walnut is unexplainably articulate....nothing like mahogany or rosewood...and the slightly thinner body brings a little more string out. The low end is really silky, too. It's an amazing experience tonally. The feel is even better than the tone. I played a standard at "The Store", and instantly recognized the magic in feel. I could not put her down. I bought it without hesitation. The necks, for some reason, are very straight, which gives you perfect punch. The nuts are cut really, really well. The feel is between an acoustic and an electric. It's that easy to play. The 24 3/4 scale helps with that. Normally, I'd give this guitar a 10 out of 10. At this price point, I'm giving it a 15 out of 10. There's only one thing I noticed. If you get aggressive in your strumming attack, her bass gets weak and she sounds thin. Strumming back closer to the bridge solves that immediately. It's mostly when you're hitting hard over the sound hole. That's about it. Just go to the store a try a couple. If you do, let me know what you think.

I just received my Gibson G-45 Studio and I love it already. I think it excels in heavy strumming. I also have a beautiful, warm sounding J-45 Standard, but that's a completely different guitar. If you're playing an acoustic guitar in a band, than this one (the G-45 Studio) is the guitar that's gonna make you be heard. It'll cut through the mix like a knife through a piece of cake. The guitar is flawless. Perfect action and intonation (right out of the box - and it had to travel a long way to and across Europe where it stayed untouched 'till I opened the box and the case myself). Very nice feel. It looks 'simple' yet classy (and I like that very much), it comes with a beautiful case and it sounds exactly like I wanted it to sound. Hats off to Gibson!
@AnAmericanGuitarist
@AnAmericanGuitarist 4 года назад
Thanks for mentioning THE ACTION! There are hundreds or thousands of acoustic guitar reviews that talk about tone, woods, electronics, tuners etc. and no one mentions the action, which always leads me to believe that it's just another guitar that will put up a fight when you try to play anything elaborate, so it's yet another D C G strum guitar. I want action like my Les Paul on an acoustic guitar and I don't want to have to use a capo to get it. Gibson is my brand so I am happy to see them make these at these prices. I will check one out.

Does these guitars have a large body? In some videos it looks like they’re really big and i definitely need a body that isn’t too big! I’m just really interested in these guitars, what a sound!
@mariodriessen9740
@mariodriessen9740 4 года назад
Tim Saelens ; They are big in the sense that guitars like the J-45 (the J stands for Jumbo) and the Martin dreadnaughts were bigger than as good as everything else when they were introduced, because guitars needed more volume to compete with other instruments. But that was a long time ago. For todays standards these sizes ARE the standards. They're as big as most classical guitars. When you walk into a guitar shop, 60% or even more (wild guess) of the guitars you'll see are this big. They're definitely not the biggest guitars you'd find. The G-45 Studio and the G-45 standard are just as big as the J-45. However, the G-45's are a little bit slimmer and thus a little easier to play.
@Belgian-Guy-
@Belgian-Guy- 4 года назад
Mario Driessen thanks for the response man! I’m just in doubt because I owned a Gibson J15 and in my opinion it played not too comfortable. You think the G-45 Studio is more eay to play then?
@mariodriessen9740
@mariodriessen9740 4 года назад
Tim Saelens ; The J-15 is deeper than the G-45, so even though the sizes are the same, the depth of the G-45 is less, so that should make it an easier guitar for you to play. But I'm not you. It's hard for me to tell you what you'll love to play. In a perfect world you'd only have to visit a good guitar shop and try out as much guitars as you can to find the right guitar for you, but that could be a bit hard to do in times like these. Good luck! By the way, a triple 0 (000-15, 000-17, 000-18) could be more suitable for you.

Hey! Back at NAMM I got the chance to strum each 45 body guitar, starting with the G-45 studio and sequentially up the price & appointments. I was surprised to find the Studio to be the best sounding to my ears, a bit bright, I'd have to agree... but in a way, it kind of resembles the sound of the new custom shop versions of the venerable J-45 this whole range is inspired from. Maybe it's the very thin mate nitro finish it has. Anyway, I think a recording studio would benefit with the sound of the most expensive version being similar to the most affordable from the bunch, as you don't need the looks and appointments if you're just tracking with it. My 2 cents. And it comes with a case! 😎

@@peterdeboer9620 I have several acoustic guitars as well as electric guitars. It amazes me the different variations of sound you get from each guitar brand and model. In my opinion the sound from the standard on this video appeared to be richer in bass than the studio. Many people do prefer that bright sound the studio has. The standard sounds brighter than my Martin but bassier than my Fender. I just received a new dr-100 Epiphone that had been on back order for ages, I tuned it up and it falls between the Fender and the Yamaha acoustic I have. The Martin has the most bass. The Fender has the most brightness. The Yamaha, Taylor and Epiphone all sound different but fall between the two ends of the spectrum. My next purchases will probably be a G-45 Studio and a Guild D240EL which I have been wanting for ever. Yes, I am left handed!

Gibson have hit onto something here, deservedly so. You're getting a lot of guitar, great sound, comfortable neck, slope shouldered, hard case, pick-up, and it's a USA Gibson. I own G-45 Studio. I think Gibson realize these guitars are too value for the money, and they discontinued it. Now, they sell this new G-45 with playerport, but the buid material quality is not so good as the original G-45 Studio/Standard. Also, the new G-45 have no pickup at all, no binding, and they provide gigbag instead hardshell case. I upgrade my guitar with LR Baggs Anthem, bone saddle and pins, and redwood arm rest. With these upgrades my G-45 Studio is almost the same guitar as J-45 Studio Walnut. Maybe even better because of Anthem. But for half of the price 😬 I was so lucky because I had a chance to buy one of the last G-45 Studio in Europe 2 years ago.

@@jnspincliffe2 YES! Richlite is like ebony, so much smoother in feel, whereas rosewood has a more "grainy" feel. You also never have to oil Richlite. Visually, Richlite is dark, so it has more of a contrast, although some people don't like how the bridge feels if you rest your palm there alot. Rosewood is warmer in tone, and I must say that I don't feel Richlite has much of its own tone really.

I can’t wait until they make a lower priced guitar with a slim neck profile. The advanced fatigues my hand. Almost like it was designed exactly opposite of what I need. Sold my J-45 studio because of it. J-45 standard it is.

Standard sounded noticeably better to me. More presence/warmth. The mid-range in particular was much more responsive to my ears.

I’d thought the same thing but from what I have read about it it has an advantage over regular wood because you don’t have to maintenance it with oil so it never drys up and shrinks. Apparently they have used it since the 40s on various instruments and it outlasts wood .

Taylor has an excellent video on why ebony is disappearing. Even EI rosewood is being used up. Morado, laurel and pau ferro are substitutes now. I have a Martin D10e and I happen to like the punch it delivers. Richlite is a combination of paper and resin. It is part wood product. My own thought is that guitarists are excessively purists. Get over it. Most of us will not be broadcast live from Royal Albert Hall. Of all the tone imparting components, the body wood, the saddle and the pins seem to have more effect.

There is a maker called driftwood guitars who says these are crap, he cut one in half on his youtube channel and criticised almost evey aspect of the instrument, sound,build quality, finish and in particular the logo on the headstock only being painted via a stencil. When I challenged him to do the same tests on one of his guitars he refused as it is not a factory instrument

I don't like the depth/size of the guitar. It feels miniature to me, as someone who has only played fullsize dreadnoughts. That said, I really enjoy the tone of the guitar....very woodsy, better than the Martin D10e I had also considered.

Amazing guitars, but the Studio sounds better IMO. More articulate, I think the fake wood on the Standard kills some tone. I have no idea what the new ones with the hole in the side are like.

What’s the difference of the J 45 studio vs the G 45 studio other than binding, fret board wood & finish? That doesn’t equal a 1,000 dollar difference

Hello Chris, I've been watching your channel for a long time, I think you are doing a great job! I'm going to buy an electro-acoustic guitar but I have a dilemma. I was thinking about the Epiphone masterbilt 400 mce, but maybe it's better to add some money and buy a Gibson? You played both, what would you choose for yourself? Is there a big difference between these instruments?

@51Dss
@51Dss 4 года назад
from what I recall in my high school wood shop classes walnut is plenty hard enough and IMHO the grain and deep colors are every bit as pretty as any kind of rosewood. Also want to point out Black Walnut is indigenous to north america and it is not an endangered species of wood - like rosewood for example.
