just ordered one of these babies with the new chipset revision. I used to have several Gigrig products back in the 2010's...but the G2 looks like "the ONE" I've always needed. Can't wait to get it!
Thanks for the video! I'm at the point where I'm all cabled up and wondering where to start with setting up patches, presets, banks and everything in the best waympossinle, so this has given me some great starting points! It's was almost daunting getting started!
This is incredibly inspiring..what a great way of thinking of presets and stomp mode..im totally approaching it this way once I can finally get a g2.. amazing tones and playing too!!!
I love the flexibility that you get with your set up. In the past, my attempts at controlling presets would end up controlling me to the point that I would go back to the stomp box dance which sucks too. Definitely considering doing something like this. Thanks for sharing!
Jerry, what a brilliant way to organize your board, thanks for sharing! I have been wrestling with the same issues with a new board (still under construction) based around the Boss ES-8.
Btw, in the spirit of full disclosure, what your hearing is my Kemper profiling amp (with no effects from it.) I used a profile I did of my light gray '94 HC-30 Matchless. In the intro music it's just the Deluxe Memory Man into the Kemper, then kicking in the Mostortion MT-10 for fills. I was going to use the Matchless you see in the video, but wasn't sure how long shooting a video might take! (this is my first video that I've done.) Thought I'd spare the tubes! Btw, that's a new stock Fender Jaguar HH Special with an Evertune bridge on it.
Hey Jerry, I have a G2 and just bought a Strymon Big Sky and I'm ready to set up MIDI however, I don't have a clue what to do and I don't even know the terminology. I read the G2 manual and it does not help me. I can't find a video that can walk me through the extreme basics. What are some good resources that I can start with? I've not been able to get in touch with the guys at Gigrig for help. 7 hour time difference and they are busy.
Not really, however I have a Facetime appointment with Joe from Gigrig this week. He's going to walk me through. My problem is that I am a complete novice at MIDI so I need someone to talk to me like I'm 5 years old. :) thanks for your reply Jerry! Love your rig!
Hey Jerry, thanks for making the video. You came up with a really Smart Way to map out your presets. Quick question, currently I only have the H9. Let me see if I understand this correctly. For you to layer the additional effects, did you set up footswitch 2 with an added midi channel(ch1,2) and footswitch 3 (ch1,2,3) channels for each midi device for it to work that way?
Great Organization, and some really nice tones --- I'm thinking; it's more than 3 foot presses to get your particular pedal preset and get back to bank one....1) activate bank selection 2) select the bank that matches your particular fx pedal 3) select the preset you want and then....you have to get back to bank 1. A WHOLE LOTTA tap dancin' - which the GigRig is supposed to eliminate. I'm not a fan of overloading switches....I wonder if GigRig could make it so if you held down the foot switch for say 3 seconds, it automatically changed to the bank of the switch you're holding down. That might make it a little easier.
Great stuff Jerry. If you felt inclined I'd love to hear about some of your pedal choices, especially drive/boost & amp combinations in a studio scenario.
Sure! I use a Sampson era Matchless a lot of the time. That and an old Nobels ODR-1 for rhythm, and an Ibanez Mostortion for lead. Both have been rehoused. I also just got an Empire pedal that I'm excited about. Thanks.
So much great info Mr. McPherson - thanks so much! I was wondering if by any chance you could share what your philosophy is regarding the routing of power cables vs. the audio cables in your Grande. That is some of the neatest wiring I have ever seen. I see a lot of 90 degree angles - and hope that you can share what your "goals" were in trying to make the pedalboard as noise free as humanly possible (important given your occupation). Or at least share what to avoid. There's neat wiring and then there is really "thought out" wiring. And I'm guessing you conquered both peaks. Very curious about the "grating". Lawn and Garden Center stuff? Thanks so much for sharing. BTW - I have three Gigrig boards - love them - and just made a micro/mini pedal G2 board that is the polar opposite of your Grande. Size DOES matter - for club working guit players like me...
My G2 only has the 2 Banks right now it does not have 8 banks like yours. When I press engage it don't give my opinion to pick a bank so hopefully I can still figure out a way to make it work with 2 banks.
Hi Jerry - Great video and it'll come in handy when I get my G2. Question that doesn't seemed to have been asked yet in the comments: What did you use to extend the Pedaltrain at the front and make it deeper front to back (underneath the bottom front edge of G2, SuperEgo, volume pedals, etc)??? Is that an add-on you found somewhere or a homemade piece (bar stock?) I'm always curious how people modify their manufactured stuff. Thanks!!
Awesome Video - Thank you so much. I was wondering @ 6:41, when you "went up to the H9", or went to Bank 6, you just pressed the 6 button, how did that single foot press change banks, I didn't see any touch with your hand or additional switches?
Great video. Curious to how you’ve done this though. When I switch between banks I can’t “bring anything down” to my main bank. It all just reverts back to whatever is on bank 1. I turned off midi on this bank like you suggested. Any feedback would be awesome.
great pedalboard and very effective way of having this set up.. so just to see if i understand this correctly, you have 4 presets on the G2 with midi disabled, and the other buttons of bank 1 are in stomp-box mode for the individual pedals.. the timeline, mobius and H9 are each set to a different midi channel that correspond to the banks that you are switching to on the G2. to change the pedal-preset you simply move to that bank, select the preset (that was already saved via the G2 earlier) and then move back to bank 1 for getting back to the G2 preset (that has midi disabled, so it won't change the pedal-preset back again) ?
This a great demo and I'm glad you read the manual. lol. Thanks for your input. My only concern is that your tone is gritty and not at all organic to my ears. Are you using a modeler perhaps?
How come no one's guessing what the source of the grating is at the bottom of the board? Jerry won't reveal it until we do! Could it be a bicycle basket cut up with tin shears? An old dishwasher rack? Jump in please!
Hey Jerry great video! As a midi novice I was wondering if you could help me. I have my Strymon timeline , Mobius , and big sky hooked up for midi with my G2.. I love being able to recall different sounds from the pedals in my different g2 presets. However when I try to add a few presets in stompbox mode (non midi pedals) to a preset that features a Strymon pedal it will change the Strymon preset.. Any idea how to set this up so that I can add my stompbox sounds without changing the midi pedal presets ?
Very nice sounds and functionality in there! Just found this and it got me wondering how you manage to change banks (seemingly) without using any bank manager or the like. Can you re-direct G2 switches to act as bank up/down switches? Greetings from Berlin!
Hey Jerry I just got my G2 and set it up and hooked up my midi cables to all 3 of my Strymon pedals. How do you set up the G2 to correspond to each Strymon pedal? What midi channel should each pedal be on? What setting do I do to disable midi on Bank one? I really need help to figure this out.
Hi Jerry, I noticed you have a Mission Engineering Expressionator and was wondering if you couldn't get that functionality within the G2 for controlling pedals with the expression pedal (assuming it's that black Mission pedal towards the left?). Thanks
I don't believe you can map the G2 to control different expression functions. I now use the Selah Quartz to map and control EVERYTHING! It's awesome. Check out my video where I use it with my smaller board with the Line6 HX Effects.
Cool board. Love it! Thanks Jerry. Where did you get those grids that are attached underneath to manage the cables? Are they metal? And how are the grids attached? I love that idea. So neat underneath!
The labels that are on the stomp box mode switches help me keep it straight. For example, switch #6 is for the H9 loop instant access/stomp box mode so I decided to make bank #6 the place where I store my 14 favorite H9 presets.
That small black box under the board, looks like it's for routing your guitar input to the G2, and then output to your amp, is that right? Where'd you get that?
I made the labels on my computer, printed them out on self adhesive label paper, then I used clear shipping tape over the labels and finally cut them out with an exacting knife. Thanks for noticing!
10 in all. A 61 blonde Fender Bassman, 1966 Marshall 50w Plexi, 64 Deluxe Reverb, Silvertone Twin Twelve, 94 Matchlles HC30, early 2000's Bradshaw Custom Audio Amp, 67 Vox AC30 Top Boost, mid 90's Vox AC15. Those all get fed by a Radial JD-7. Then I also have in my amp room a 55 Fender tweed Deluxe, and a tweed Champ.
Hey Jerry. Fantastic video and incredible playing! How do you route signal to your tuner to stay on all the time? I used to take an out from my volume pedal but I hear that can degrade your tone. Thanks for your suggestions!
Thanks! The volume pedal I’m using has a tuner out that sends signal to the tuner no matter how you have the volume pedal set. Also I’ll run my entire pedalboard thru an A/B box to test it out for signal loss or degradation. I’ve not had any issues.
